They could even keep it in the same place, just charge admission to pay for security. Unless there is money being made, the local government is unlikely to make up the funds that will be needed for adequate security to keep out trespassers (I mean, if they’re not doing it now, why would they do it in the future after they’ve already wasted so much money on demolition?) and the problem will keep getting worse even if they remove the stairs.
This has been dealt with at other popular sites by using fees, timed permits, & regulations. Repairing the stairs earlier & now proposing to tear them down makes no sense.

I hiked the stairs way back in 1981 when first visiting Hawaii. I had some friends that I met on a group backing trip in the Sierras in Calif. They lived in Honolulu and were members of the local chapter of the Sierra Club. Active hikers in a club at UH, so they knew all the hiking spots. Back then just the locals knew of this trail and it was virtually unknown to tourists. Still the morning we went after signing a waiver at trail start, I recall seeing only about a dozen hikers on the trail mid-week. Not much erosion like today with the overuse and heavy tourism. Even after 40 years I can remember hiking this strenuous but spectacular trail. Wet and misty in some parts but the conditions always cleared for those amazing views. Sorry that woman resident is having such a hard time. There were some signs posted back in 1981 regarding trespassing and private resident property, but people were still law abiding and respectful then. Pono. The stairs were virtually unknown to tourists back then. Nowadays with social media, these places and how to access them legally and illegally can get such exposure. The Hollywood sign has always been an icon for L.A. and tourists have always wanted closer access to it. After the movie LA LA LAND, parking and trespassing by tourists to get illegal access or get as close to the sign as possible became a huge problem for residents living in proximity to it.

It was no problem to check in with the Coast Guard and sign a waiver before doing the hike, and they had a small parking lot that precluded the need to park on the nearby streets. It's shameful that over time (after the Coast Guard no longer had responsibility for the trail) hikers no longer have consideration for the homeowners in the neighborhood, even to the point of trespassing and assaulting this woman and others who are looking to protect their property. I would love to see the stairs maintained and accessible, but I appreciate the needs of the community for respect and safety. We now live in a world where "my rights" are considered inviolate at the expense of the rights of everyone else. It's sad to think that the Haiku stairs are little more than an attractive nuisance now because the people who believe they have a God-given right to use the trail do not respect anyone else's rights.

They have a right to the privacy and security of their property. I'm not a property owner, but if I spent as much as it costs to own a home and land in Hawaii, I know I wouldn't want random people tramping through it.

Nobody has died there and rescues are extremely rare. One guy died of a heart attack on trail, has nothing to do with the trail. The stairs are super safe and we’re rebuilt less than 20 years ago.
