Hiking Koko Head (Failed Attempt) | Honolulu, Hawaii

  • The Koko Head hike is a challenging and rewarding outdoor adventure located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. It is known for its steep and strenuous trail that leads to the summit of Koko Head Crater, offering stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean.
    The hike begins at the Koko Head District Park, where you'll find the trailhead. The trail consists of a series of 1,048 steps made from old railroad ties. These ties were originally used to transport military supplies to the lookout bunkers at the summit during World War II. Today, they serve as the main pathway for hikers to ascend the crater.
    I was unable to complete the hike to the summit, as the trail was getting way too steep for me and I was worried about the inability to make it back down.

    That's a brutal time of the day to attempt Koko Head. Just the heat alone is a challenge then add 1000+ steps...whew! But I love that climb. Best to do during sunrise or late afternoon. Next time AK, you'll be able to complete this hike. The views at the top is worth it 👌 Glad you knew your limit. Many had to be rescued down.

    You're so adventurous, AK! This is more of an incomplete than a failed attempt, and you deserve an award for your efforts! 🏆 You've made such great progress along the trail! It's so steep, and it's so fascinating to learn this used to be a railway to the summit. 😲 18:54 This segment looks dangerous. 27:16 Astonishing views! 😍 Good job with the hike, and I'm glad you didn't push yourself knowing your limits. 👍 I appreciate you doing this hike, and thank you so much sharing the amazing views, AK! 🤗⛰

    Great attempt Ak!
    But why would they allow a gun firing range to be next to that hike? That’s absurd. But apparently they have been doing this since 2008?
    Anyway good attempt. I think it’s too steep and you turned back at the right point!

    Good attempt! Those steps would be difficult for anyone. Do you know what kind of train went up those very narrow gauge and rather flimsy-looking tracks? Here in New Hampshire we have the cog railway up Mt. Washington (elevation just over 6000 feet) which is very sturdy and is the only way I've ever been to the summit of that mountain. When I was a teenager, 65 years ago, I attempted one of the trails with my father and brother, but after 3 hours we were driven back by the heat, humidity, and black flies. Good job and good video! Many thanks!

    I was there in May 2017 out of shape and failed at the 30 seconds deep drop step area as that was too much for me. I saw a lot of of fit joggers going up and down like a piece cake. For sure those are residents who train on it daily. It’s best to hike on it in the morning hours as it is cooler to hike on it.

    I did this hike last week while I was on vacation in Oahu. Unless you're constrained by time, it really should be done first thing in the morning. I did the hike starting at around 5:45 AM, in the cool of the dawn, and it was still pretty brutal. No way I could ever recommend someone to do this in the heat of the day.

    Good that you knew your limits and decided to trek back down for your safety. Unfortunately many people mostly tourists will ignore that gut feeling and end up needing medical services and an airlift off the trail. Looking where you stopped, looked like you were about less than 25% left till the top. I've done that hike many times and can be brutal. Especially during the mid day which is why most locals go early morning to avoid the heat.
    But great try!

    I live at the base ok Koko Head and I do this hike a few times a week. It’s best to do it early in the morning or after 5:30 PM when it’s not so hot. The secret is to push and preserve. It’s not easy but it’s rewarding. I don’t agree with those telling you good job for quitting - the reward is pushing past the mental barrier telling you to quit.

      After 5.30 is risky?

    • @andrealers2509
      @andrealers2509 6 місяців тому

      @@Remy444music hi and thanks for the question. It’s not risky at all after 5:30 PM. To be honest, I usually hit it at 4:00 AM (and, believe it or not, I’m typically not the first one up). I’ve never felt unsafe. But, doing it late in the afternoon is also a great time. You don’t need a headlamp and it’s not so hot. There are always plenty of people too. The only time it’s risky is when it’s raining g and the steps get slippery. You don’t want to fall. Good luck!

    AK when working on the track it is important for your own safety not to walk on the ties or sleepers as we say in the UK as they can be very slippery you always must walk on the ballast as it is a lot safer that is a part of your personal track safety training in the UK
