You missed something else Layne did in this vid….prior to dropping the beat, he was singing a high harmony. ‘Cause the violin and the beatboxing isn’t enough, he also has
    a beautiful voice.
And one thing to watch Eli for - the man doesn’t breathe the way a normal person does. Watch this again: he does a whole damn section finishing with a belt all on one breath.
Geoff isn’t their secret weapon: He’s their gateway drug. He gets your attention because no one on the radio sounds like that; you start listening to him, and before you know it, you’re hooked on VoicePlay as a group.

I love how Eli can basically do an impression of any rock singer, he straight up sounded like Hetfield on the line "but I know", he also did a great job in the Queen medley, in the Imagine Dragons cover, basically anywhere. That's why I love these guys, they stay so close to the original no matter how far they deviate from it (I'm not sorry)

The original has a long instrumentual intro which VP honour. It's totally worth to listen to in it's own right.
The only regret here is we hear so little of Cesar, but is masterpiece by Metallica, that VP pays the tribute it's worth, making it even more of an epic masterpiece.
For a totally differently masterpiece where Cesar shines, listen to Can't Make You Love Me, ft EJ Cardona, elder brother of Omar with an equally angelic voice.

If this breaks you, try their cover of True Colors - there are even tears in their eyes as they film, "VioLayne" also plays violin in their Warriors video (first in their post-apocalyptic soon-to-be trilogy). The merch says "VioLayne on one side and "A cappella. It's better with instruments." on the other - which was a comment one Patron made. And deep bass grumble you were wondering about was done by Layne and it is an inhaled note.

The one that shows Eli off the best, is probably Hoist the Colours. But yes, he's very flexible. He even sing bass during Geoff's solo parts in live performances of some songs (e.g., Little Mermaid), though the official studio audio just has Geoff double-tracked, because they can.
I *think* the deep-pitched noise you asked about, during the violin solo, is Layne doing something called "ingressive phonation". I'm fairly confident that he does that in Enemy (sounds a bit like a beat-boxing warthog), so that's probably what's happening here too, I think. Not sure how much electronic manipulation they've done to it; amplification certainly, not sure beyond that.

You haven't see all of Eli. He professionally does character voices and he, Ceasar, earl, Layne, and j none bring that out in Hall of the Mountain King and Oogie Boogie
Layne does what he calls burp boxing strategically. They didn't like the look of him burping and playing the violin simultaneously during filming. But those were both him. Eli was the one that went sky high just seconds before Layne started the violin. That was improvised during recording (he felt it was right)

It's so nice that when J. None is home in Florida on leave from the Navy he can step back into his old spot with the boys. If you didn't know he left the group summer of 2021 and signed up for five years in the Navy. He is currently the new frontman for Navy Band Northwest! J. is sitting next to Geoff. Cesar was asked to join the group after j. left and they filmed If I Were A Rich Man/Girl. Eli was in a Rock Band before joining VP. They had to make T-shirts after this was released for VIOLAYNE! (FYI) J. None also plays the violin. They both played in Warriors.

Pretty sure the odd noise with the camera shake during Layne's violin solo was a Layne vocalization. If you check out VoicePlay's cover of Enemy (feat. AleXa), you'll hear him make some similar sounds in that video. My rule of thumb is that if I hear a noise that I can't identify during a VoicePlay video, it's usually Layne!

For a palate cleanser, consider Home Free's new video, Mississippi Squirrel Revival. Part of the reason your channel is growing so swiftly is that both groups have an active fan base who constantly seek new reactions, and there's a huge crossover in fans. The guys in both groups have been friends since participating in season 4 of The Sing-Off show and tour. Rob, Tim, and former member/cofounder Chris have appeared in VP videos, and Layne and Geoff have both helped HF with arrangements (Butts Medley and Elvira).
If you want to hear more VioLayne, I suggest Warriors. J.None also plays violin in it. Follow it with what fans call its sequel, Dream On. Both have apocalyptic looks. The zombies got J. and Earl after Warriors, and the survivors picked up Cesar and guest Omar Cardona for Dream On. (It's "baritone" Cesar who hits the high Tyler scream note, not the tenors.) Keep watching until the Patreon list rolls because sometimes there's an extra bit, and watch with captions on. Because of Kathy's hearing loss, there's often a bit of humor and other description with the lyrics. (Like "gentle a capella singing" when Geoff starts off Dragonborn Comes. Gentle? Dude, the floor is shaking.)

    • @dj_410

I'm not a huge Metallica fan but I love the original of this song and VP more than did it justice - I would love to know what James Hetfield and the other Metallica guys make of this cover! Eli was in a rock band at some point and he can really bring the rock grit into his voice when required - check out "Queen in 5 minutes" to see both Eli and Geoff in rock god mode! I've got wide musical tastes but do tend to lean heavily to the rock side of things so hearing them in rock god mode makes this old girls heart skip a beat 😉

Regarding the singing, or rather the arrangements. both Geoff and Layne create harmonies that reach right down inside you and move you. It's a talent. To the best of my knowledge Stein is a German names, meaning stone. and would usually be pronounced as Stine. ( ei = i in German. ) Layne is Jewish, (as is Eli pronounced like elly, short for Eliezer and his name Jacobson should give that away), so knowing that I'm guessing his name is from a German Jewish derivation. If I'm right then I would also imagine he pronounces his name that way. But I also know that in the US names are often not pronounced the original European way so I may be way out. :) No doubt someone will correct me. You really really have to see their cover of Warriors. Really. I believe the odd noise was from Layne, and on an in breath, but can't swear to it. He does things like that.

First, pretty sure it was indeed Layne who did that burp during VioLayne time.
Second, I'm not a hard core Metallica fan as it's not the music I generally listen too. However, they are an iconic group. I appreciate what they do and have done for music, rock in particular. It's the hardest stuff I'm not the biggest fan of, but they have many songs I very much love and do pull out some of their songs on occasion. This song is one of their most highly regarded songs and I love it. This was fantastic, but you really should listen to the original. It is top notch and most likely will give you another level of appreciation for what Voiceplay did. Not sure one could actually say one version is better than the other as they are different.
Third, I think if you're not familiar with Metallica or this song in particular, not sure how you could NOT love this version or at least like it and appreciate it. It's the hard core Metallica fans that are very protective of this song since it is so highly regarded. There is a reason this is not a highly covered song. It was brave of Voiceplay to take it on. For the most part it seems the hard core fans are appreciative of what Voiceplay did her. I personally love it. One of their best to date.
