Kim's videos about Chinese (or Malaysian, or South-East Asian in general) culture are genuinely my favorite part of her channel. I absolutely love learning new things like these, and Kim seems to really enjoy talking about them. Happy CNY everyone!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Kim! It was really cool and fascinating learning about your family traditions and culture. I'm just a typical American mutt (ancestry from all over EU), so we don't have many traditions or fun and interesting things like this in my family, so I love learning about what others do. And welcome back, hope you are well and enjoyed your break.

I love these old traditions that cultures have. I'm South-African, but my roots are European, so we don't have these long lived traditions. I enjoy the spirit of these celebrations and its so infectious. Happy non-Gregorian calendar New-Year Kim! We miss you!

As you've mentioned, many chinese symbols involve wordplay or homophones. The fu/fortune character is displayed upside-down because the word for "upside-down" sounds like the word "to arrive". Also, in "nian nian you yu" the word "yu" sounds like fish, but is actually the character for "surplus" or "abundance". Anyway, happy CNY! Having spent the last several away from home myself, really happy to see you hyped for a proper reunion celebration! Cheers!

Thank you for showing us the celebration Kim! I always want to go to the Chinese New Year celebrations near me, but the Chinatown is always super crowded during these events (I'm short, I wouldn't be able to see), and the Chinese/Vietnamese neighborhood is just so tiny that they usually don't bother with any of the lion dances like they used to.

The "chasing away the demons" part actually remind me of our Yule celebrations. For procession (I guess you can call it that, we're usually not that many) before the actual Yule blót we put on masks and make a lot of loud noise. It's meant to scare away evil spirits before we start the blót proper, and welcome the nicer spirits of the place. :)

Happy Chinese New Year Kim and everyone! :D
Just some notes on chinese new year:
-The symbol that Kim spoke about being hung upside down (pronounced Fu 福), I've always heard that it's because the word for upside down in chinese sounds like the word for coming in (pronounced Dao 到), so hanging it upside down makes it sound like fortune coming in (Fu Dao 福到).
-The Idiom Nian Nian You Yu (年年有余) doesn't mean may you have fish every year, but may you have abundance/surplus every year. The word Yu in the idiom is not the Yu for fish, but the Yu for abundance, but because it sounds similar to fish, people tend to mistake it for fish instead of its original meaning, or pair the idiom with pictures of fish.
-Yes, I agree with you about the chinese new year songs. Totally.
    -Steamboat. Best thing eva. :Q

Steamboat dinners are really good. Me and my mum had one in an oriental superstore in London (not sure about the restaurant's exact nationality) and, with the help of a propane stove and a large pan, have made some of our own whenever we had guests around. Good choice, Kim.

People tend not to get the distinction and often just mean physical beauty. It was more in reference to the 'and sexy' though.
