  • I wanted to find out for myself which material is better for socks, so I did an experiment using a wool sock, an acrylic sock, and a cotton sock, and three bottles full of ice. I learned something! Please hit Like and Subscribe and visit www.thefiberpusher.com

    Measure the volume of water instead of estimating the size of ice

    Love the real world experiment. I notice I get that clammy feeling when wearing cotton socks just around the house from time to time. Now I know why. Thank you for the video. :)

    Would there have been a bit of difference if the socks were all the same color ...all dark or all white?

    • @Zoltoks
      @Zoltoks 3 роки тому +1

      Yes for sure darker will dry and stay warmer on a sunny day. It can be -5F and the sun will warm my dark jacket up faster

      Well yes... but there is no doubt that wool is the superior material regarding socks and 1st clothing layer (the one you wear closest to the body, which could often get wet). You should never ever wear acrylic clothes on long adventures/marches.
      About cotton... I personally don't think cotton is that bad, it's a good substitute for wool and doesn't bite the shit out of your body.
      But honestly wool will warm you up very quick and won't absorb humidity as much as the earlier two materials, so as I said - if you know you'll be out there for a long time, doing rough tasks, and you need clothes you can 100% rely on that they will keep you warm, then you need to take wool.
      I know one guy who does a lot of bushcraft - and I mean that, he can make a fire in heavy rain or survive a winter night on siberia without a tent, he recomends wool.

    acrylic will hold body heat better than cotton, not as breathable as cotton so your foot will heat it up better, but your right theres no beating wool for temp regulation even when wet

    the best socks in terms of warmth are socks made from a mixture of wool and acrylic and polypropylene!!!

    This is one of the coolest videos I've seen. So simple and straight forward. I'm wondering if it's possible for me to share this on Instagram, of course crediting you for creating it. Let me know. Cheers from England.

    How would bamboo do? More like wool or cotton?

    • @benitastory8213
      @benitastory8213  2 роки тому

      My guess it would be more like cotton since it's a cellulose fiber.

      They should be labeled as such when you buy them. As for mine, I knit my own socks so know they are wool. There are burn tests you can do, but that would damage the socks, so...

    Best yarn.?

    • @benitastory8213
      @benitastory8213  3 роки тому

      Are you asking for the best wool yarn for socks? Personally, I love BFL and Corriedale, both of which can be found in commercial yarns if you look for it. They are much stronger than the popular merino. If you are a spinner, try to get a hold of Suffolk or Dorset. Both of these are strong and resist felting.

    Doesn’t prove anything. I prefer cotton over any other sock.

    Cotton socks wick away sweat from feet that it why the cotton sock is wetter than the others. Cotton lets the skin breath. It's the only type of sock that doesn't your feet ache.

    • @benitastory8213

      Sorry to disagree with you. Wool is the best breatheable material available, wicks moisture away from your skin and is very, very comfortable. I get blisters when I wear cotton socks and my feet get wet, but with wool, the moisture is no issue and I have never had a blister with wool socks. And, yes, I wear wool socks all year around, including in the summer.

      @@benitastory8213 Don't be sorry! There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone and have a heathy discussion. I found your experiment really interesting and I'm really glad you posted it. I was looking at your video because I wanted to start knitting my own socks and wanted to use either a cotton or a wool. I thought wool would get soggy because if you get wool wet it is a pain trying to get it dry . Cotton dries a lot quicker. I have always worn cotton clothes because they let your skin breath. What kind of wool are your socks made of? Do you wear thick wool socks in the summer or is the wool your socks made of finer so your feet don't sweat and ache? I hope you don't mind me asking. I really would like to start making my own socks and the fabric to use seems to be the first place to start. Wool would be easier for me to obtain and for me to knit with.

      @@jacksnstaffs8293 I wear socks made from wool, fingering or sport weight yarn, both commercially produced (tends to have some nylon added for added strength) or handspun. I find that my feet never feel clammy or damp with wool socks, even in the summer. I used to swear by cotton socks, too, and cotton sweaters, but since switching to wool for both, I have never looked back. There are a lot of great indy-dyed yarns out there, and if you can get Corriedale, Targhee, or BFL socks yarn (these are breeds of sheep that make longer lasting sock yarns over Merino) go for it. In fact, I can recommend www.brendaandheatheryarns.com. Their Targheel Base sock yarn is soft, comfortable and strong.

      @@benitastory8213 That's great, thank you for the info. I'm going to give a try. I'm still not sold on the wool in the summer though :) but I will try them in the winter and see how it goes! I like to use natural fabrics as much as possible, cotton close the the skin and usually wool for jumpers, coats and trousers. I am going to be getting some angora rabbits soon and hope to be able to produce my own wool, though it may be a bit delicate for socks. I'll check out the wool you suggested and hopefully have some lovely wool socks soon!

      Cotton absorbs quickly and dries for a very long time!!! it dries longer than other materials! where the moisture has not evaporated, there the foot will quickly freeze! the best socks in terms of warmth are socks made from a mixture of wool and acrylic and polypropylene!!!

    You’re not trying to keep yourself cold in the winter. You are trying to keep yourself warm. Try again with warm water and then go back and see which one is not warm anymore. Maybe use a thermometer. DUH!!! Stupid experiment. If i ever want to stay frozen in the winter I’ll re watch this video.

      Which is why wool socks are better. They keep your feel warm in the winter even if your feet get wet. This is what the experiment was about.
