  • In this video, I compare expensive Merino wool socks vs cheap ones. I purchased a lot of different affordable Merino wool hiking socks to see if I could find a viable alternative to my expensive Merino wool socks. And I noticed that I get a lot fewer blisters when wearing my expensive Silverlight and Darn Tough Merino wool socks.

I'm wearing a pair of Time May Tell Merino wool socks at this moment. I've hiked in them and haven't noticed any issues. I have a couple Darn Tough socks, but not the Merino wool ones. I'll get a Merino wool socks from Darn Tough to see how good they actually are. Good info!

Thanks for the overview. I have had the Silverlights for a year or so and they are going strong, both myself and my partner use them and no issues, no holes, they are so worth the price. I do wish they came in lighter colours but we wear them year round for day walks/ hikes and travelling.

Hi! Nice to see such a detailed overview.
Pls make one for underwear or pants, if you can. Sadly I'm jusf z beginner into hiking, but socks issue so far was easy to solve - I just kept rotating my socks on each smallest stop - one pair outside backpack to dry, dry ones on my feet. But the thighs were itching and then aching on 3rd day of my hike - my underwear was rubbing on my legs as I'm not as skinny.

Great video! I use injini toe sock liners under my darn toughs. My issue is my pinky toe is smashed against the other causing friction. So I pre tape that problem spot and it seems to help a lot.

I wasn’t sure exactly what you meant around 4:20 saying only Omniwool and Kirkland follow the “same” composition… same as who? Each other? The expensive Silverlight?

I got a $30 pair of smart socks and a $9 pair (Mark's) on the same day same place. I wore one of each for a couple days switching feet etc... I honestly couldn't tell the difference. I went back to the store & bought the last 4 pair of the $9.... it has been about a month that i have been wearing them.... they are all holding up great. Also the cheap ones have 4% more wool - 66 vs 70.... less expensive isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ballston is another less expensive great product....

I use Danish Endurance hiking socks for autumn-spring Mountain biking. I believe they function much better wicking function than anything on the mountain bike sock market have to offer. They’ve lasted 3 seasons too. That’s putting a lot more rough Kilometers than I do hiking. They should really sell them as mountain biking socks.
Their cycling socks are not that good unfortunately 🤷🏻

I don't know if Wiggle post to mainland Europe, but here in the UK they have a lot of darn tough socks at a very reduced price. I paid about £13.50 ($17) each for two pairs with free delivery back in their November sales.

I need these not for running but for my condition chilbains. I need them for thermal regulation, do not want too much compression. Otherwise in the cold weather and me being underweight my toes get purple and swell from not circulating properly. Hoping to get some good ones. If anyone has tips let me know. Doctor said I need some merino wool socks. I only have cotton and polyester or spandex socks.

I binned the contents of my sock drawer about 3 years ago and bought 6 pairs of Darn Tough socks for daily use, 3 for 2 deal total spend £104. In 3 years the socks have increased to £32 each. Super comfy, almost no wear. I don't expect to buy any more socks for at least 10 years.
A little disappointed that the Warranty is pretty much worthless outside of USA is the only downside.

Darn Tough socks are also made in the USA. If you live in the US, buy made in USA as often as you can. It really matters.
The more we buy here, the more jobs we have here.
Always try to buy local if you can. Imagine if 10% of what you buy is from your country. A 10% increase in GDP would pay off a national debt

    • @OscarHikes
      @OscarHikes  8 місяців тому

Personally, I wash them every 2-4 days when thru-hiking. The longer you hike with them, the stiffer they get and I could feel my feet getting a bit more sore from that.

*A wool sock over a tight silk sock eliminates friction on your feet entirely by making the silk sock essentially a second skin layer.

    - Silverlight Hiking Socks: 40% Nylon, 53% New Zealand Merino Wool, 5% Silver Yarn, 2% Spandex
    - Darn Tough (Style 1972 Men's Light Hiker Hike/Trek Sock) 54% Nylon, 43% Merino Wool, 3% Lycra Spandex
... thats a lot of nylon.

Pure merino wool isn't durable and it's too stretchy. That's why nynon is usually added.

I agree that they are getting pretty darn expensive... I paid 102.26 EUR in total with express shipping for 2x crew and 2x ankle pairs 2 years ago. Now the same order would cost 155.80 EUR. But then again, everything costs more nowadays. As someone who also does Ecommerce (trailgoals.com) it's sad to see the prices of our costs go up and up every few months, which also requires us to raise the costs to stay profitable... :( But at least I can vouch for them lasting a long time - me and my GF are still mostly hiking with our Silverlight's even after 2 years. Still no holes and no blisters.

Wait until you learn to knit your own socks like haveing one strand mohair and one strand merino or alpacka. You have no idea how it is to have socks exactly as you want from animals you know have a good life. Also if wool is itchy or not is alot more complicated than that. Silver is not envirmentaly friendly in socks and if you air out socks when you sleep its not needed. Have other socks for sleeping.
