    John - the last case study - was but a whipper-snapper of 90 when this video was made. His DL was 130. When he finally grew up (92) he pulled, in a contest, a 215, a 225, and then a 235.

    I just bought the book and have been devouring it. It’s exactly what I needed to take my fitness to the next level. Very detailed in the physiology, but easy to understand and fun to read.

    I’ve been training myself with dumbbells at home using the Body For Life method by Bill Phillips, for about 6 weeks and I am seeing results. I ordered your book today. I’ll be 69 next month and hope to see additional improvement with your method. Thanks for this great information and the inspiring models!

    Very good - thanks for sharing, Sully! Appreciate the work you do to help older people maintain strength and mobility when aging. It is interesting how many people associate aging with a natural progression with declining fitness. You show there needn't be a correlation or indeed association.

    I just discovered your channel a few days ago. After watching this lecture, I am so touched I almost want to cry. Usually, when you're kind of old, people write you off and you go to a nursing home and you wait to die. Here, you're showing me that old folks can get strong and have a meaningful life. I'm 65 and am recovering from an illness that caused major muscle loss. All my doctors told me that I will never recover from my muscle loss. I want to prove them wrong. How can I start a club like yours for mature people in my city? Thanks.

      The concept has massive potential to improve and save lives. If exercise is medicine then Barbell TRAINING is the most powerful Drug out there. I am in the Fitness business and I have seen the power of the SS approach first hand, I am not a SS coach but I have used it on my self and on clients, it is amazing how fast underweight and weak individuals respond to the stimulus provided by it.

    I am 57 and have recently begun the NLP. I have been doing all sorts of training for decades and at one point had a mid 600kg pl total. But I let it slip. mandering through a lot of running, biking, kbells. Now I am at sq 110k x5 x3 sets, bench 95k x 5x 3 sets, deadlift 160k x5 ohp 47.5k x5 x 3 sets. Would it be possible at this stage in the game to catch up my old numbers, or is that a bridge too far?

    I read you book with great interest. I am a 57 y.o. Nurse and a 30 year gym rat and outdoorsman. Your approach is the most empiric book I have read in a long time as it relates to aging and exercise. Great job. One question. Are there relative contraindications to your prescription as there are with many prescriptive substances and interventions? How about pre-existing conditions like spine surgery, shoulder repairs etc. I am pondering adoption.......Best regards.

    • @jonathonsullivan5281
      @jonathonsullivan5281 7 років тому +5

      Tony, this is a great question. We did write an appendix of contraindications, but it was left out (along with a few other precious treasures) for reasons of space. We are thinking of publishing it as an article at the Starting Strength site or on the Greysteel Blog (www.greysteel.org).
      Most orthopedic and spinal procedures are only relative contraindications. There are a few absolute contraindications--major vascular lesions like dissections and aneurysms, uncontrolled epilepsy, certain arrhythmias--but they are uncommon.
      Thanks for your interest. If you enjoyed the book, I would ask you to give us a review at Amazon if you are so inclined and have the time. And keep watching--more great stuff is in the pipe.

      Thanks for the quick reply. Happy to rate you on Amazon of course and I will keep watching for the updates on your site. Off to the gym....and day 1 Novice. Best Regards

      Tony, you may be interested to know that Starting Strength's weekly report features a (only slightly tongue-in-cheek) post in the "Best of Forum" section regarding this very issue. Here's the link:

    Hi Sully, Thank you for all of your hard work and research. On your Greysteel Texas programming, there is no other deadlifting except for the Friday's new 5RPM. When or how do you get stronger to prepare oneself for the new PR?

    • @GreySteel
      @GreySteel  5 років тому +2

      When you start out on GSTM, you'll make progress, as in the standard TM, by simply adding weight to the bar every cycle--and then lifting that weight. Most Masters can continue in this fashion for many weeks or months.
      Eventually, as is always the case, and as discussed in the text, you'll need to increase the complexity of the program: Rotating Reps, back-off sets for a little more pulling volume, add a light deadlift day, move on to four-day split, etc. By the time you get to this point, your program will already be increasingly invidivualized, and if you've really digested and internalized the principles discussed in BBRx and PP, you'll know how to do this
      .

    Is 90 minutes 2x weekly the minimum or is it the average? Just wandering for clarity

    • @GreySteel
      @GreySteel  2 роки тому +1

      It's what we use at Greysteel, for historical and practical reasons. It works. Less than 2x/week is a little thin. More than 4 can be too much. 2-3 x / week seems to be the sweet spot, although of course there are individual differences.

    Heeeyy!!! I teach AP Physics. Force x velocity is power! Force x displacement is work.
    And fitnes could be ones ability to make little copies of themselves! But thats a Darwin thing.

    • @GreySteel
      @GreySteel  Рік тому

      Unless I am mistaken, that's exactly what I said about power. W/t = Fd/t = Fv, after all. Turns out I had to pass physics to get into med school🤔.
      And fitness is in fact the capacity of an organism to meet the demands of its life and environment, said capacity being of course subject to natural selection. Darwin and I are cool.
      So I guess I don't see your point.

    Lol I love these videos, but the bulking up myth is hilarious. If it were so easy to accidentally bulk up, don't you think every man would have a fitness model's body??!!
