The inside of that garage looked amazing with all the Alfa's. The 156 3.2 GTA still is my dream car. Glad to see that the GTV is fixed again and better then ever before.
Nice video Chris. Glad to see the GTV getting fixed. I have an identical gtv as yours (only difference is the spoiler on mine) and recently installed a quaife. Massive improvement. Well done 👍

Cheers Rob, I appreciate you watching & commenting. Autolusso are a pretty good garage and there isn’t much that they can’t fix! What do you drive by the way?
@Rob-oi9mf nice! Phase 1 Spiders are pretty rare now! I have a phase 1 GTV, which may actually end up getting restored live on the Alfa stand at this years NEC restoration show!
I had a planet wheel shaft snap on my Alfa 164 24valve differential and the gear ground it's way through the casing. Luckily I had a spare transmission in the shed (as one does 🙄) so it was mended fairly quickly and economically. The car was not ragged about so I'm not sure why it broke but my Alfa specialists said it was far from unknown.
The planetary gear in my '81 GTV lost a bunch of teeth and locked up the trans mid corner a few years back. But thankfully being an ancient transaxle, it was pretty simple (and relatively inexpensive) to drop the box and make the repairs. Also a good opportunity to replace the crunchy 2nd gear synchromesh!
Hi Tim, unfortunately some design flaws or material inadequacies only show up after a number of years / miles. All cars are subject to this, not just Alfa of course! Remember the disastrously unreliable BMW V8 engine?
Nice one 😉👍🇮🇹 This video gives me both fear and hope. My pride and joy has been under a dust cover in my garage for 3 years because of gearbox issues and after a couple of bad experiences I have got myself into the mindset that no one will can fix it 😭 However, this proves that there are good guys out there! 🙂
Hi David - yeah, the Autolusso guys could sort it without any drama I’m sure but it might be a few quid? To replace the gearbox and clutch and add a Q2 diff to my GTV was around £2,400 inc vat. I also sourced the replacement GTA gearbox myself which was another 650 quid….😥
No matter what time of day or how hungry you are, you can always feel like you could eat a full English. Some nice Italian machinery in that workshop 👍 Glad the GTV is back to its best 👍
It's too late now if the answer is no ... but I hope you took the opportunity to have a really good look at the gear selector cable while you had the box out. Three months after I had the clutch on my GTA replaced, one of the selector cables decided it didn't like being connected to the shifter anymore - and snapped. (The banjo connectors on the end of the cables also commonly let go without warning too). Not a high cost or hard to fit item in itself, but it was a right pain in the arse (and cost) to get access again to remove and replace ... In hindsight, I should have just replaced it pre-emptively when the clutch was being done. A simple visual inspection would not have identified the failure was imminent as the snap occurred inside the "sleeve" but my car had done nearly 270,000km at the time.
Hi John, how are you? Thanks for watching and yes I believe the cable was visually checked during the refit but probably should have been replaced. I didn’t know it was a “thing” to be honest - thanks for the heads up!
@@TheAlfaNut the other thing to keep an eye on is the housing at the base of the gear shift - why do they make this stuff from plastic? - it's another thing that can break without warning. Not as hard to get to or replace but still a lot of faffing about. I imagine there are custom alternatives made from steel or aluminium, though I haven't gone that far yet. Very sensible though to get the Q2 - really should have been standard with all V6 models 3.0L and above. Amazing to me that neither the early GTAs nor the later manual GT 3.2s came with it standard from the factory (though nearly every surviving early GTA - like my May '02 - have had it fitted at some point).
Wasn't it possible to rebuild the gearbox? The gearbox on my 156 GTA was rebuilt some years ago (to be fair, took a few turns to get it exactly right) and is still working well. But it looks like a great job performed by real specialists (though Linford didn't seem to appreciate the camera that much 😬).
Hi Dean, cheers for watching mate, its an original system. Its easy to replace the remote locking system but original key fobs are impossible to get now, so an aftermarket system would also mean a non standard key & transponder.

Thanks for watching Tim - sadly I didn’t have any “spare” gearboxes lying around so I had to buy a replacement GTA box. Synchros are pretty much impossible to find for GTV boxes these days it seems.
