- Abandoned Kroger - Weirton, WV. Enjoy a look at this vintage little Kroger grocery store. It served the downtown area of Weirton for 62 years before corporate decided to shut it down. They blame lagging sales for the reason for shutting down. I disagree with Kroger over the fact every time I passed this store it was full of shoppers. I bet they closed it due to the larger location just a few miles away. However for those who don't drive or don't have a car, the elderly, etc., this was convenient being right in town and easy to get to. Upon walking around the building, I get joined by a little cat that wanted to hang out with me. Obviously a stray but a fun little way to explore with the cat hanging out. Enjoy!

Mannn wish you were able to cover all the abandoned Kroger in NC when they all closed in 2018
It’s my hometown! And also, it’s now a Dollar Tree.
Yeah Kroger closed 3 stores where im at about the same time. Leaving alot of town without, they were here 50 years. What Kroger told you guys is exactly what they said here in Peoria IL to us .Youve came across my algorithm your little town . Oh it looks like a place that would be nice to move to.
Lagging sales my butt, every time I went in there it was busy. I truly miss that store
I'm from Toronto Ohio. I live in Steubenville, Ohio. I shopped tht store for years. It's sad tht it's gone. They put in a Dollar General nxt door.
Hey, a local yokel... I dont know ya but cool seeing someone on here. ✌
Mr Pib soda .had for first time visiting family cousins Baton Rouge Louisiana .14 years old at the time .61 years now.
The one in McConnellsville is even smaller
I used to deliver bread to this store between 2015 and 2020. It was always a slow store and the manager who was there for years was never interested in pushing extra sales (a lot of it has to do with the space issue). If I'm not mistaken, this was the only Kroger, either in the regional area or across the nation, where they paid rent for the building. The company didn't own it. So when the rent got jacked up, it wasn't worth it for them to stay. That's what I've heard anyway.
Speaking of the Fujiyama, a couple more restaurants moved into that building since you filmed it. Unfortunately, neither of them lasted very long...
Wallie, last time we were here was summer of 2019 when we were on a cigarette run (much cheaper than PA) ... Been to this store many times. At their service desk, they still had a sign saying effective Jan 1, 1986 the legal drinking age is 21... lol, it was a walk back in time. I use to be an auditer for Ktogers... believe it or not, the smallest in the chain is in Nelsonville, OH just SE of Columbus... 965 Poplar St, Nelsonville, OH 45764 is the address. This store is less than half the size of this one and still does great business. Love your videos, hope to meet up when we get back home to Pgh.
I'm watching cuz one of my coworkers used to work at this store before they closed it 😐
If you can do a video on the old weirton dollar general that would be awesome. It was a really awkward store.
Krogers always served the population downtown. Mainly the elderly and lower income families. It was sad for them.
Greetings from Huntington.
That would be a good location for an Aldi
wow thats a small kroger!
My grandfather was a meat cutter in that store for 30 years until he retired in the 1967 thanks for the video
Publix needs to locate in West Virginia to compete with Krogers.
the eat and park still on the hill
yep
Price Chopper in Cohoes NY and Lake George NY seem a lot smaller than this kroger
It's a sad fact that the changing retail business has been evolving for years. The online order and delivery of everything you need has changed all small business and just left us with supper stores.
I grew up with that store since I was born. I loved to visit every time I visited town.
That Kroger actually had a pharmacy?
7:08: "THE CAT!" -Colin Mochrie
Maybe the Kroger will be O’ Riley Auto Parts just like they did with the Kroger in downtown Clarksburg after the built a big Kroger on east point
I live in wellsburg wv, like 5 mins from there lol
Looks super dated and definitely TINY! WOW!
Wasnt sales. The landlord of the building didnt wanna fork out money for repairs
There's a place called The coffee Bean off of Pennsylvania avenue. If you like coffee give it a try please. The owners are really nice
To many grocery stores are closing even in South west Missouri! I agree I hope a grocery store would take it over!
What town?
My childhood Kroger
The people need store there hopefully it will happen soon
I'm from weirton , thanx for stopping in town. Biscuits and gravy at tudors is the 👌.
Thanks for Always Sharing Video Wallie and Kayla. Hope You Enjoyed it and Thank You for Watching!!!
That ramp is probably there basement
Wish I knew you guys were in town!! So excited you finally posted a video on this Kroger! You definitely caught the feel of the city and how much we depended on that Kroger, especially my dad who lives in those highrises and is disabled. Someone we know goes around and feeds all the strays in weirton, it's terrible. Anyway nice to see you here!!
Kroger's was tired of all the thefts and closed it. I miss that place
What are you talking about they close because of lacking sales. Plus the building needed updated it was leased. kroger very seldom leased properties. They own their own property and store on the hill so it was a better financial move for them !
I saw a man with a guitar outside of that Kroger bc i live in Weirton and we got some weird shit
Dollar general swooped it to take the people who needed that Kroger similar to how they took over for the grocers who left nearby Toronto
Kroger is a decent company to work for .. Union protection & you start at top of price for position.
Awe the poor kitty 😢
Kroger leased that building and didn’t own it which is why it was never fixed up when all the other Krogers across the country were, They never said so but I think that was the real reason it closed. very sad for the people who live downtown and do not have a way to get up on the hill for their groceries bc the bus will only let you bring a few bags on it at a time and there has been colonies of cats living behind the for years and there are many people who feed them and catch them to get them fixed and then the release them so they are pretty well taken care of
Wallie.maybe you should take it home I'm sure your sweety would be ok with Kroger kitty..
I live close to there I shop there before
It was a very nice store and I had friends to worked there. I have lived in Weirton most of my life. It was great for the folks downtown. Sad to see parts of the town I grew up in disappearing.
I am rite down the road from Weirton & across the Ohio River in Martins Ferry. Is that a Cobalt or a G5 that you are travelling in???
2009 G5 5-speed!
Krogers on grant line road in New albany indiana is abandoned it closed in September of last year I worked there from January to September of last year you should do a video there also
I drive by that place everyday
Krogers is everywhere there trying to buy off Albertsons here in Arizona. I don't know if they did or not but they're everywhere out here but they go by another name it's called Fry's🤷
I remember the K-mart and Kroger when I was in Wierton back in 2012. Love your videos ! Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪 😀
Many moons ago, when Kroger was still in western Pennsylvania, there was a Kroger in my town that was basically the same size as this one here that you filmed!
I didn’t know they closed it . Bye jobs.
Hello from Weirton WV! 😀
You want to see a small Kroger's, go to McConnelsville, Ohio.
I live in Weirton and have rescued several cats that were dumped or born down there. Just today I found your video while looking for the number on the For Lease sign which was taken down, as the property owner has threatened to have the nice lady who feeds them arrested! She has been feeding those cats for 12 years and is terrified! Now they have no way to get food, and the car place next door called Fergusons destroyed all of those shelters... some that I made and donated myself. It is so terrible! At least when the workers were there, they looked out for the cats.
I worked at this store from 2007-2010 everyone I worked with was nice it was convenient for the older people that can't drive we never had a lag time it was always busy loved the customers to
You made a very good point about foot traffic. People, no matter where they are, need access to food. I live in Baltimore, MD. Food deserts are here too.
the IGA still there
kroger owned tom thump here in fla and they sold it to an over sea company and now they suck
So incredibly sad to see. Too many small and/or mom pop grocers are gone forever. You are right Wallie. The elderly, disabled, indigent have depended so much on these places😢
in my case where i live sure there are people that take a bus but there are a few grocery stores but they are the more expensive ones. the discount grocery stores you have to take 2 buses to get there and then having to drag stuff home is a pain.
Kroger corporate is just a group of ruthless people
Oh yeah it definitely looks like one of the smaller, older stores.
The little kitty says, I'll just hang out here and clean my paws! #KrogerKat!
I wonder if that kroger use to have the old big box sign in the parking lot
I lived in Weirton all my life till recently I moved out near Beaver Falls PA. I lived on Orchard street for about 15 years and remembering how busy that store was when I was little. I'm 54 now and to see how downtown is turning out the way it looks the way it is now, it hits you hard. I have many memories of downtown being a kid and all. The mill is totally gone and that's what really hit me only because my father and his brothers and sisters worked there for years. Downtown will never be the same. It's gone forever. And I'll never see it but would like to go through town again in about 50 years from now. That's if it would be a downtown.
That store is so old I bet that lower basement dock area was where they dumped the coal or ice.
That would be good spot for family dollar store 😊
A lot of grocery stores do not operate stores in downtown areas and it does make for food desserts
They put in a DG 😂 Weirton has 3 dollar generals
I miss working there. I was there for 8 1/2 years as the lead dairy clerk. Me and my co-workers. We were p.o. when they told us that we were closing. They told us not to tell anyone before they told the public. Our regulars, who knows us very well, notice very well and they saw our faces and ask us what was wrong and we told them what was just told to us before it broke out to wtov9 and Weirton newspaper.
My god they took everything
This brings back memories. My family used to shop that store when we lived in weirton backbin the 80s, before the steel mills massively downsized.
I 👍 Like Kroger In 🏙 Dallas/Fort Worth On 2025 & 2029.
Those totes are insulated shelters fir a feral colony of Cats ant the have a care taker. I wonder how long the cat in your video has been there, because I don't see an ear tip(not all clinics ear tip)that would tell a rescuer that the Cat had been TNVR'd. Good luck Kitty🧡
So I live in Weirton WV. The REAL reason the “downtown Kroger’s” was abandoned was that the other Kroger store on the hill was losing money. So by closing this one it forces everyone to use the other store.
That's just a crappy thing to do. Everyone who depended on that downtown store now has to go through all that trouble to go to the one up the hill. Corporate greed right there.
I don't believe that the Kroger on the hill was losing money, if it was, it was due to the fact it was near competition (Walmart & Shop-n-Save). Downtown Kroger had no competition....but it did suffer from theft. I think the combination of theft and it being too small (running out of certain items) is why it closed down.
I loved having that kroger when I lived on Marland heights!
I shop/deliver groceries through Instacart here in Weirton. I remember doing a few orders here and you couldn’t fit two carts side by side in the aisles. Always super friendly and bound to know someone! Dry goods were always really well stocked, frozen was hit/miss because of the space available.
Thanks for the video living in Oklahoma we don't have a Kroger and, I have always wanted to see the inside of one once again thanks for the video and have a great day🙂
'
Awesome video
This opened in 1956
65yrs used by residents its rediculous as hell they closed it
Korger like to be owners of their own building instead of them being apart of a shopping center
When I first moved to weirton I been in this Kroger several times. I remember it closing and thought how much it sucks if u live in down town and not by the big fancy one on three springs
I love wallies videos everytime he makes a new one I click it immediately his videos are so interesting
When I used to live Plymouth Indiana.I shopped at Krogers at one time.now I live in Illinois now.I shop at hyvee and Walmart
I live down here I fucking hated going to that store
Kroger has left a trail of ruin in Steub/Weirton. They closed up the smaller stores and moved to their "mega" complexes in strip malls.
That "I wonder if they have cats back here... oh look, there's a cat!" and the cat footage is up to par with the famous "Look at the front, where it says Ames real big". It should go in your intro. It has the same shaky fast zoom in and everything, I love it.
People hurt themselves when they break out windows, doors etc. Or damage insides. Because another store like a save alot . Etc. Could've used it. But their not gonna put alot of money replacing windows, doors and other damages they can't really afford it.
Awesome Wallie
WOW, amazing it was there 65 years .
That's insane good thing u Finley get to do a video good video to
How did you get inside? 2 years trying to read the meter next up pole cut them ,krogers paid lease for a year to keep anyone out
I didn't get inside. I just walked around the outside and looked through the windows.
You were talking about how close the 2 Kroger's are. In Mississippi there is an area with 6 Kroger's within 10 miles. But each one is hard to get to. It's a 20 minute drive between each. And all are open and operational. They most likely didn't want to remodel the old store.
Kroger's ceo is the modern age version of Scrooge but with no redemption.
Closing down stores, pathetic management, poor man salary, pathological lying, the list goes on
I really missed Krogers being there when I lived on Hudson Ave I would always walk down to Krogers and buy something
I saw one a little of a 14 years ago I believe it was in either Schenectady or Queensbury New York when I was there that was smaller than that. And they said that all of them use to looking like that
If you want I can tell you more about Kroger downtown.
That's surprising it lasted so long. A lot of the '70s/'80s "Greenhouse" Krogers were built to replace smaller, older stores by the hundreds (I used to work in an OLD 1940s Kroger that was renovated in 1978 to a newspaper office). Now the Greenhouse stores (where they still remain) are kind of the smaller, older stores of today (which I actually prefer). You only ever find them in rural towns with no competition though. Those Greenhouse Krogers were just the right size and layout.
what's a "greenhouse Kroger"?
Kroger did the same thing In Clarksburg, WV around 2020. They built one large store to consolidate two smaller stores in town.
A lot of staff from this one probably went to the newer store. That could be another reason it closed.
Yeap we got some at Steubenville including one of the mangers who just sadly transfered out to another store
