Hey just a few updates/corrections to my video commentary:
Step 4: I kind of skipped over this one, but at that point you should start the game, select your language, etc. This also ensures that the base game just runs correctly.
U-boat skins: They are only applied to the player's U-boat so only install ONE skin for the type of U-boat you are in (or none at all). They're not used for AI boats.
The 2 Widescreen Mods: They're for custom resolutions that you likely won't need. If you happen to run SH3 at those resolutions, just use the one you need. If you're going to run the game at 1920x1080 (like most of us) you don't need to install any GUI mod; it's already installed.
Compatibility: If you have issues with the game not running, try setting the EXE compatibility to Windows XP SP2. Windows 7 works fine for me.
Installed OneAlex mod, loaded wide screen mod. It works perfectly :)
One issue: on no screen do I have the depth meter/speedometer, like the one in vanilla SHIII, with which I can determine at what depth and speed the boat should go. Any idea how I can make those things appear?

@@dominikjankowski3040 yes, I believe so. That's just cosmetic. The thing you want to do (as shown in the video) is start the new career, leave port, go 50nm out, save and exit. Then check your Careers files and make sure the dates line up. I've had to fix those every time. The video shows you how to do this.

the 1366x768 gui is part of my contributed modification and it has some improvement over the 1360, some laptops does not support full 1080p. never the less well done on the video 👍
Are you planning on porting also the ARB gui to 1366?
@@smokkerino5411 i have already started that, and it is canceled for the time being. i have repositioned some Ui elements, but unfortunately i failed to resize them .

Dude THANKYOU for this, perfect instructions and the game is INCREDIBLE, I own every sub game under the sun (Uboat, Wolfpack, Silent hunter 3 vanilla etc) And this is by far the most comprehensive game out there, how on earth does a game almost 20 years old get it so right?
Of course with the added mods it is just that much better. I am about to stay up way past my sleep time just to read the manuals lol.

Thanks for this tutorial! You saved me from a crippling headache. Left to my own devices, I undoubtedly would have tried to install every single mod and would have spent hours afterward trying figure out how to unscrew what I screwed up.

I've spent whole day trying to fix something about not loading my Career and it turned out that you have to really wait for the game to like load properly. It took ~12 minutes for my PC to boot it up. Nice video anyway! Really helpfull.

Thanks for this step by step guide. @19:00 is this the step required to create a "Dummy Career" as mentioned in the GWx manual, under Game Bugs/Saved Games, Page 14 (PDF 27/644)
- "Players who have just one career in stock Silent Hunter III will occasionally find their career has no saved games . . . . . .so the GWX team suggests you create a ―dummy‖ career (e.g., for Leutnant z. S. Fubar) before starting your real career to ensure this does not happen."
GWX OneAlex also makes reference to this on 8/64 ". "For the stable operation of the save system, it makes sense to keep a dummy career in which the boat went on one trip and is now
in the database. "
Is this what you doing here, or just demonstrating a successful Mission SAVE, also referenced Page 40 of the SH3 Commander User Guide(CUG) ?

I get it now - this video is essential, if like me you're totally new to SH3, and favour realism over the latest graphics, this video will help navigate the incredibly messy installation.
Hopefully one day a developer will pick up the "realistic ww2 submarine sim" genre, but until they do, I'm glad this video is here, to accompany this old gem + all the mod devs

Hello all, I’m new to the game and so excited to get after things. However, I’ve run into an issue during the installation. I follow the video and do everything correctly up to the part where you actually start the campaign. I matched the start date and class of boat to what I have in the commander. I don’t modify anything, just go in and start the first mission. But it will not load. I’ve been stuck at the loading screen with a full red bar for over 10 minutes several times now. Has anyone dealt with this issue and has a fix? Thanks!
I have, and have been getting an error at launch. Still trying to work the issue out, gonna try not running it in windows 7 because i've done everything right so far according to both the readme and the video, and I'm running into a crashing issue. 4060, i5-4500k 6core whatever-the-hell so I know its not the rig.

Great tutorial! Really helped break down the process of installation! Got just a couple questions regarding the campaign mods:
If i want to start playing on the Atlantic and then move to a flotilla in the Mediterranean, is it possible to have those 2 campaign mods turned on together? Or is it even possible to have all campaigns on? (not factoring the even more insane load times due to simulating all the ships)

Nope. You can only have one campaign mod at a time, or none at all for default Atlantic.

Doesnt launch in fullscreen, when I change it to fullscreen it says cannot initialize 3d engine. Any fix? Ive been trying for two hours

It works!!! Thx you for the tutorial. I have a question here. Is there a way to fix the propellers? The blades from the left one are equal as the right one and for me is a bit harmful to see a propeller that turn in the opposite direction from the actual movement. 😅
Hi, I did all of this and the game goes perfect, but when Im loading into a Patrol or Mission the game stucks loading at the end, when the loading bar is full, any help?
How long are you waiting for? I have to wait about 8 or so minutes, but once it loads it is smooth.

Wait for it. It is slow at loading a lot of files, even after the progress bar is full. Remember it is old and heavily modified. I thought something was wrong too. If you hate the waiting, get an SSD and put it there it will load in about 1/3 of the time.
Update: I added an SSD and moved the installation to it. It is still slow to load missions and career patrols. It went from like 3 to 6 minutes to load down to about 2 minutes. So no miracles but still about half the time.
How much storage space does it take when installed?
When you download this modpack, will the game be played in 1080p by default? Or the games "native" and worse resolution?
It will scale to play on 1920x1080
Anyone know why when I launch silent hunter commander after following all previous steps correctly, I doesn't pop up on my screen? But it is running in the taskbar? I can't get it to show up. I can't shift + right click to enlarge or move it or anything. Help!

However I have one problem. When i use the frost side of the attack disc, I can only rotate the Attack curse pointer and the targer disc. I cant rotate the compass rose or bearing and lead angle. Have an Idea of why that's happening?

The game causes to crash when I enter the command room in career and single mission mode, Except I can enter the command room in naval academy, The above all starts the game from the SH3 command, Any ideas are welcome.
I have some concerns about this mod. While installing this i got over 10 malware warnings from Norton. Is this Norton just overreacting or should i be worried? (Also the game didn't work propperly: When loading a new career, the red bar would fill up and then just do nothing).
It's malware-free. Also try loading a mission to see if the game works on its own or if it's the campaign
problem is I can't run it fullscreen with 1680x1050
can i do auto lock on torpedo's i like to do that sometimes...

i have 2 other versions of sh3 on my computer gwx and lsh3 and im trying this...
Thank you for this guide. The issue I'm running into on this is that the zip extracts everything but the "application" files in the default "SH3" folder. Really strange. I see them in the zip package but they for whatever reason WILL NOT EXTRACT onto my pc. Any suggestions?
One suggestion. Do you have a long folder name that you are installing to? If the total string length of the folder and file name is greater than 255 characters, then Microsoft does weird things. This dates all the way back to DOS. If you had a long name try a short one, like just OneAlex or SH3One.

I followed all the steps of the video but SH3 commander only launches a taskbar preview. I tried running in both windows 7 and windows xp sp2 compatibility modes and neither work, both as administrator.
Fix found. Under the SH3 CMDR properties, you need to check "run in 640x480 screen resolution", then manually change back to your native resolution after it launches.

question... i already have sh3 Commander, JSGME, sh3 gwx 3.0, and the sh3 folder in documents. what happens if i download onealex mod? will it not work?
I do not believe so. The Onealex mod has changes to the base GWX game as I understand it (in the .cfg files and others). To get it to work w/ your setup you'd probably need the "Multi-SH3" app that lets you swap out multiple installs of SH3. If you check out the Onealex PDF documentation you can see the list of changes he's done.

Welp I have the steam version because my PC doesnt have a CD drive to install the game I got long ago. It works, still have a lot of mod flipping to do to reach optimum fun levels. The Sub intetrior mod is causing isssues atm im trying to fix

Hi, I've followed your video and my map tools and insrument GUI's are different from yours, have I done something wrong?
You may have installed the GUI mods that come with the pack. Those GUI mods are only for those specific screen resolutions
@@abulia3046 I have the same issue. The UI is much more cumbersome and more modern looking. The Map tools are just a row of Icons instead the tools themselves. I didn't use the GUI mods though. As far as I can see, I did everything like shown in the video.
However I just installed the ARB WideGui 1920x1080. Now it looks like on your screen. However one has to make sure not to follow the install instructions but rather put the correct folders into the MODS folder and use JSGME.

OneAlex includes the entire game. You don't install it over anything, you install it in its own sandbox.

Too bad I can't get it to work. I got SH3 via Steam with GWX working just fine for a while now, but I wanted a bit more. I can get this to run in the academy, but not in a mission. It's a common thing, as I've seen a few with my issue. Even tried the 4GB patch, but nothing. Oh well.
That's literally how I run it, from a Steam download (then copy the file and decouple from Steam). It should work if you follow all the steps.
For me waiting like 10/15 minutes worked out. It really takes a while to load new save.
@@qqqrwa Yup, that's normal. It's not optimized for modern hardware and is pretty slow w/ the Onealex mod. I believe in my video when I do the cut I share that several minutes have passed. Glad you got it working!
I did everything to the letter during install, game loads fine but once I enter a campaign the red bar loads fully then it crashes to desktop. I have GWX 1.53 is installed in C:\Games and all exes are set for compatibility, makes no sense. I have a intel I7, nvidia 2070, and 32GB ram on W11 X64. The issue is not with how /i installed this, it has to be something else, please help.
Same here and I have another version moded from few years ago that works
I finally got it working, a few of the locations in the ini's were incorrect in the default install. make sure they point to your game folder and it will work.
