Problem in Hartford is The XL Center is too small. Seats just over 15k. NHL minimum is I believe 16,500. Secondly, the tv market is even by NHL standards very small. It sits in between the NY and Boston markets. Also, due to "must carry" and "significantly viewed" regulations, the Hartford tv market also gets the regional sports nets from both NYC and Boston. Trust me, I'd love to see the Whalers move back to where they belong....In Hartford or perhaps a new arena out in the Burbs. Raleigh is a terrible market for hockey. The Hurricanes are a decent team, but can't draw flies. The have to practically give tickets away. Raleigh is a college basketball town.
@@patersonplankrd They are also going to make the XL Center even smaller in the years to come to accommodate the AHL and College sports. Also, at this point the XL Center seats only 14,750 for hockey since they removed over 1,000 seats to add in a fan bar at the top of the lower bowl, and they added an ice lounge behind one of the nets.

If the NHL was smart, (they're not. They're North America's most inept of the 4 major sports leagues for a reason) they would give Atlanta with it's fast growing population, diversity, and abundance of corporate headquarters a team again. NHL at least was VERY reluctant to leave Atlanta and only did begrudgingly when they couldn't find an owner in Atlanta. The NY metro has 3 teams..... They don't need that many. Islanders or Devils should move to Atlanta. Arizona should also keep their team because they are also fast growing, diverse market. Does LA metro need 2 teams? No. Ducks should also move to Houston.
I would like the Hartford whalers to come back because they used to play 40 minutes from where I live. It would always be nice to go to a hockey game without having to go through a two hour drive or a train ride to get to New York.
Minnesota was the worst goon squad in pro hockey, starting with Bobby Goldthorpe. I saw Howe and sons play for the Whalers after I moved to Houston (too late to see them play for the Aeros). I also saw him skate a few times after he turned 60 for the IHL Detroit Vipers (purely a publicity stunt to get people to their games).
John Stark - The Flyers of the 1970s were bad boys indeed, but the Fighting Saints were the worst. Outside of a very old Davey Keon whose best years were over 15 years before, there was little hockey skill on that team. Even the WHA Birmingham Bulls were straight up hockey players by comparison and they were basically a goon squad. I did watch a lot of WHA hockey living here in Houston. The fans in Philly, regardless of sport are well known to be the worst, although Boston fans come close from my experience.
@@stevensherman4756 lol, I went a North Stars game in Philly, all I can say is 1: good thing I was in a box seat alone 2: good thing I didn't get pulled over on the drive home. I smelled like a brewery driving home. Just glad the ticket was free too. 50 mile drive home soaked and that wasn't fun.
M Detlef - I think you have it a little confused. Mark Howe had a great NHL career most notably with the Flyers - not like his father’s but then again, who has. It was MARTY who’s career was cut short by that injury. It was because of how Marty was hurt that the goal mounts now break away. When Gordie joined the WHA in Houston in the early 1970s, both Mark and Marty were going to Sharpstown High School here in town.
@@faithdzn Nope. Josh is right. You can't even draw for an AHL team, what makes you think you can support an NHL team!? You had your chance. I remember going to EVERY game, or trying to much as I could at 17 years old, and barely finding 6k at a game. Fahhh Q, you're done.
I had been to games in both Hartford and Quebec City, and the arenas were full and exciting. When I meet a "fan" from Pittsburgh or Washington, I ask "were you one of the 4,000 before Ovechkin/Crosby?"
yeah, it was so full and exciting that both teams left. If it wasn't for a "Save the Whalers" campaign, they would have left sooner due to poor attendance. And this occurred in cities where there were no other major professional teams to compete for entertainment dollars while having some of the lowest ticket prices in the league compared to average income. Teams benefit and gain fans by having star players and being successful, and most suffer in attendance when the team does poorly. That's how the business works.
my grandfather played for the ottawa hockey club and cousin played for pittsburgh, toronto, st louis, and others (Mike Bullard). wild games between ottawa and montreal back in the day and that is way toronto renamed so many time due to so many new owners or payment issues and player clauses. wild in the old days. great video.
amazing...One of the reasons why the new Owner took the team to Raleigh was lack of fan support. 11k or 12k per game just didn't cut it. The "Mall" as it was referred to affectionately( or not) is an older outdated arena with an inadequate seating capacity. To attract a team back to Hartford would require a new arena and a significant fee to the Bruins for territorial infringement.
Also living in Connecticut missed the whalers As went to so many games got to go on the ice meeting Dave Tippett Sad never win a Stanley cup. Only with the hurricanes

@@retroguyretail1976 do some research. The owners of both Atlanta teams had no idea how to run a professional team. The thrashers had good attendance numbers throughout their time before getting sold to a corporate office of brands. I stand firm that if they had a single owner with deep pockets Atlanta would still have a team and attendence would be great.
ditto for canucks, their original logo was that ice rink stink C logo not weird fish thing. I liked that weird V thing gold uniform bright colors. maybe do a video of teams shifting logos uniforms, & why rangers & jets had similar uniforms at different times of their history.
I always remembered the Seals as the Oakland Seals first. After a deep dive into the internet, i have found that back in the summer of love (1967) they played as the California Seals until early December. Changing to the Oakland Seals, they continued to play sub 500 hockey for the rest of the year. I guess I could be forgiven, I had just turned 6 when they started their season in Oct of 1967.
Good video. Small errors. Jets moved to Phoenix to become the Phoenix Coyotes. They changed to Arizona Coyotes years later. Atlanta Thrashers moved after a dispute between owners who owned building, Hawks, and Thrashers. Ultimately, Thrashers were put up for sale and were moved only when no one stepped forward to want to own the team in Atlanta market.
The stipulations on the sale seem to have been intended to dissuede the Thrashers ever staying in Atlanta. Point blank, it appears the owners sabotaged the team, on purpose.
I want to see Atlanta get another team because I want the Nordiques to come back. 1st Atlanta team to Calgary 2nd Atlanta team to Winnipeg 3rd Atlanta team to Quebec... it could happen, right?
Nordiques would be sweet! Could have also included that originally the Coyotes were called the Phoenix Coyotes until the team went bankrupt and the state bought them to keep them there. Could have very well moved to Québec at that point. There are also always talks of a team coming back to Hamilton. There were even rumours of bids for a team based in the Kitchener / Waterloo area until Seattle got the bid.
Judging how things are going, Arizona will probably become Houston sooner or later, but it might be delayed since Bettman refuses to admit moving to Arizona was a bad move
I had Hartford whaler season tickets. If they had a true new NHL building they could draw 20000 and game. They also had the best theme after a goal the brass bonanza I would love to hear it again!

im so sick of hearing this. They never left! They're the Hurricanes. Also you want whalers? They may be a womens team, but the Connecticut Whale of the PHF are basically a modern Whalers.
the Carolina Hurricanes owner owns the rights to the Hartford Whalers all logo and copyrights are theirs. The price would be huge if a ownership group in Hartford wants the name back. Plus the Bruins franchise would require a payment as well, due to the close proximity of the Boston to Hartford.
@@Elite Last I heard, the words team and franchise are interchangeable. Even with ownership changing hands, if a franchise keeps its history and records, name changes are irrelevant. Only once, with the Cleveland Browns of the NFL, did a team's history stay with the city. All other such moves in the big 4 sports leagues are unfortunately more common.
@@fromthehaven94 not quite true, the NBA allowed Seattle to keep the Sonics history and the history of the Thunder starts with the move of the players (not the franchise) to Oklahoma City. They just haven't gotten a team to replace the one they lost. I would also assume that many cities will try and do the same if a team without a history of moving attempts to do so.
Honestly Cleveland needs another chance. By the time the Seals/Barons got here, there was so much financial damage done that there was no way the team would have been viable. Meanwhile, these days the Monsters, our AHL team, is usually near the top of their league for attendance year after year.
Also, they played in the Richfield Coliseum. It was in the middle of farm country. Had they played within the city limits, like the Monsters do, they might have faired better.

I'd love to see The Whalers and the Nordiques return to the NHL. I know they built a new Arena up in Quebec to replace the old one, and I've been hearing talk about Hartford wanting to build a new Arena to bring back the Hartford Whalers and also possibly get an NBA team up in Hartford

Wow that means a lot thanks!
Super video - I especially enjoyed that portion regarding the origins of the NHL - but top shelf across the board! Thank you!
I most miss the North Stars ( Minnesotan. Born and raised- exiled to Nebraska) Minnesota never forgave them moving to Dallas. Despite often putting an inferior product on ice- they had support. State of hockey
I would like to see the whalers back even if it’s only to hear the sweet symphony of Brass Bonanza, the greatest goal song ever
I miss the nordiques so much. I would love to see them come back
@Don Avan I was a Dekes fan in the 90s and my heart broke when they moved. Having said that, there's very little money to be made there. Just over a half a million people would make it the smallest market and no opportunity to grow the fanbase in a meaningful way. For better or worse, it's economics not politics preventing the teams return.

I wasn't born when the rivalry between them and Montreal was going since they moved before I was born, but from what I've seen across documentaries and heard from quebecers, it seemed great. The sad part is that the middle class across these cities probably couldn't afford tickets for a game. We know how the government likes to take money from us over here, this added to taxes would prevent a lot of people from going to the games. If we were to have a team, the government would have to help cut the prices...

@@nicjoe5116 Fair enough, but it's still a really small market with little room for growth. You're far more likely to see a team in Houston (Metro: 7 Mil) than in QC just because of the potential lucrative market. I would love to be wrong because the Nordiques were awesome and QC is one of the most beautiful cities in North America. I just don't see it happening any time soon purely for economical reasons.

ginantsfan5 beautiful color scheme and cool logo.
@@Slavic_Boer ....I Love your Screen Name!
No they won't and all of that money goes to the NHL since they own the Whalers brand.

Atlanta misses NHL hockey!
You can afford the NYR ridiculous ticket prices?
I wish the Hartford Whalers would come back.
The last time I saw Gordie Howe play live was in Duluth MN when the Whalers played the Minnesota Fighting Saints in a WHA preseason game.
@@stevensherman4756 actually the Flyers were the worst, and their fans are still the worst 🤣
I wasn't very well liked there rooting for the Stars and they tied the game 😂
Needless to say I wore every beer within throwing range when they got the tying score.
I’m from Canada but would love to see the return of the Whale!

I had been to games in both Hartford and Quebec City, and the arenas were full and exciting. When I meet a "fan" from Pittsburgh or Washington, I ask "were you one of the 4,000 before Ovechkin/Crosby?"
Um before Crosby Pittsburgh did have this little known player named Mario Lemieux. I hear he was not bad.
Yeah but between Mario and Sid they couldn't give enough tickets away.
@@rikpontician8499 True. Before they got Syd I remember they were last in the league by about 20 pts.
Kind of an asshole. It always takes something to ignite a new love for hockey, who are you to judge?
yeah, it was so full and exciting that both teams left.

I definitely want to see the Montreal-Quebec rivalry again. It would be absolutely EPIC!!!!!
why is my feed filled with trash when there are gems like this out there?
Whalers stuff is STILL sold like hot cakes in CT.
amazing...One of the reasons why the new Owner took the team to Raleigh was lack of fan support.
11k or 12k per game just didn't cut it.
The "Mall" as it was referred to affectionately( or not) is an older outdated arena with an inadequate seating capacity.
To attract a team back to Hartford would require a new arena and a significant fee to the Bruins for territorial infringement.
It’s funny, if you ever travel through Hartford or Quebec, they still sell a lot of their team merchandise/ souvenirs in stores & airports.

After a deep dive into the internet, i have found that back in the summer of love (1967) they played as the California Seals until early December.
Point blank, it appears the owners sabotaged the team, on purpose.

the Carolina Hurricanes owner owns the rights to the Hartford Whalers all logo and copyrights are theirs.

Agreed! They would have great regional rivalries with Columbus, Buffalo, and of course Pittsburgh!
@@fightingirishinohio yeah that definitely didn't help being way out in Richfield. The Lumberjacks saw an attendance boost when they moved downtown too.
