  • I show you how I propagated my purple passion plant in order to multiply them and have more plants. This is a pretty simple and safe method, if you find that your plant is becoming to leggy or vine like, this is also a great way to promote a more bushy growth.

A small artist's brush or make-up brush is good for dusting off that loose soil when planting cuttings or other small plants. I use on for my tiny succulents, too.

As they mature, they like to branch out and vine. If you want them to remain bushy and less leggy, keep it pruned. It hates water on the foliage, so water carefully. It prefers bright indirect light, and moderately moist soil. I believe the more humidity and sun, the more vibrant and lush the velvety purple hairs become. Thanks for the prop tips!

Very helpful! I have kept clones of my purple passion alive since 1971. I almost lost them all to a white fly infestation two years ago. If I hadn't been cloning them in different parts of my house, I would have lost them! I have only two established plants at the moment and it's time to make more baby clones! Your video is reassuring and helpful!

I'm so glad I found this video! This is literally the only video I have been able to find about this particular plant! My best friend found 2 of these hidden under a pallet of other plants almost dead in Walmart. She gave me one and I managed to get it fairly large but hers unfortunately died. She didn't realize it was an inside plant and forgot it outside during a freeze! Now I can get her another one. We think they look like plants from a fairy garden, so whimsical and colorful. I'm going get a new plant started for her now! Thank you!!

You can actually just put your cutting back in the soil and they will root. If you do use the water method you don't have to leave them for so long...once you see roots...put them in soil. These are sooooooo easy to propagate.
Also to avoid water on the leaves that cause mold...put your pot in a dish that will allow you to put water in the lower dish so the roots get plenty of water..but the leaves don't get wet.

You must NOT let any water get on the leaves..... NO MISTING... Watering the plant from the bottom is better. The water ON the leaves cannot dry because of the tiny velvet-like hairs that cannot absorbe the water, making the plant prone to leaf rot and may attract bugs. The use of a humidifier for your indoor plants is a PLUS especially if you have air conditioning during the summer as the dry air can become a problem for your house plants. This IS a lovely plant to have. Good information on this. Thanks.

A very informative video. Now if you can get your purple passion plant to flower. You're doing pretty good. Because it won't flower unless it's very happy. And yes, the flowers do stink. But they are also beautiful, so it wouldn't hurt to leave a few of them on. And by the way, when you're making new plants they're not "clones" are just babies. You're growing new babies. Clone sound really technical and kind of cold. But otherwise, a good video.

I wanted to share a mistake I made with my purple passion plant. I have it by my window which we always keep open. this causes the room to get pretty dusty thus getting dust on my plants. when I watered my purple passion plant, I decided to give it a little shower in the sink to get the dust off. big mistake! there’s two separate purple passion plants in one pot, and one of them started to droop really bad like it does when it needs water. I left it alone, thinking it was rotting. and sure enough, it was. the stem started to turn black and eventually that plant rotted completely. I learned today online that purple passion plants hate having water on their leaves. the water stores in the hairs on the leaves and causes them to rot. so now I know not to ever do that again!! i’m super glad I still had the other plant left, but I noticed that one may be starting to rot as well, so I took a cutting and that’s why I came to this video :) I also learned that these plants only live for 3-5 years. so if you’ve had yours for about that time and it mysteriously dies, that may be why!

Did you leave the cuttings under a grow light/room with a lot of natural light?

Mine sit under those lights you can see behind me! They seem to work really well for them!

Hi! I have a plant that I believe to be a purple passion plant, however its leaves are not as spiky looking. Do you think this is the same plant or some other hybrid?

I have a purple plant that has grown out of control, how much of the runs can i cut back before endangering the plant? ~5 runs hanging down ~2-3'

you could chop it back pretty far, probably leave like 6-8 inches and it will bounce back

So I’ve propagated my purple passion and they’ve gotten so leggy but now the stems look woody? Why?! Is that bad and can I fix it?

Yo my guy you only need 2 growth nodes! Top for growth and the bottom node for rooting! It is literally only an inch long and roots just as quickly as the large ones!

I see how yours died being left too close to the water but if you get 70 cent neoprene inserts at a garden supply center and clean out keureg coffee cups you can put your cuttings into that and cut the top of a water bottle and put holes in the bottom of the disposable coffee cup Insert. Then fill the water bottle up to the level of the stem obviously and it’ll keep moisture away from the leaves :) also you don’t even need to leave the leaves on just the growth top technically but if you do leave a leaf it’ll grow quicker granted you can keep moisture off of it!

Any of those woody small bumpy growths on the vine part seem to be nodes with potential to start rooting. So one could take advantage of that when picking spots to propagate by cutting.

Just an FYI, you don't need gigantic roots while propagating. 2" is sufficient. 😘

Meet Virginia take cuttings and grow the new ones if you’re worried your larger plant isn’t dong well and maybe think about what’s wrong in your soil. :)

Someone, please help. I have a purple passion plant and did the cutting and had put it water to grow roots. The roots are big and healthy, but every time I try to put it in soil, it starts to droop really badly, like it is going to die. I have waited several days, hoping it gets better and will not take to the soil, so I ended up putting it back I the water and it perks back up. What am I doing wrong?

    • @girlslife07

hey! I just wanted to say that when you’re propagating a plant in water, they get used to the constant moisture. so when you transfer the rooted propagation into soil it will need more water than usual because it’s been living in that constant moisture for a while. i’m not 100% if this is what is causing your plant to droop. but in my experience my purple passion plant gets droopy when it needs water. take this with a grain of salt because I don’t want my advice to kill your plant! but it might help :)
