The ball thingy you mention that the new plant grows from is called a tuber. Another way to propagate chain of Hearts is to plant the string where one of the small tubers occurs, Severing after a period of time when new growth is evident. That tuber will eventually grow quite large as the plant matures. The way you are propagating will give several new plants. I do like the way in which you propagate the string of hearts and will have to give this a go. Thank you.
Thank you so much for adding clips of the string of hearts as you talked about them in the video. It's SUPER helpful and what a lot of other plant videos that other UA-camrs produce have been missing!! Keep up the good work!
The round things are called caudicies (singular caudex). Succulents that have them are called caudiciforms. They're are lots of them but they're not all related, many families have a few, even families that are not mostly succulents or mostly succulents but not caudiciforms. Some people specialize in collecting caudiciforms. Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii is the commonest member of a large and variable genus, not all of them caudiciforms. It belongs to the family Apocynaceae (the Asclepiadaceae has been lumped into this). This is a large family with some very interesting members: Adenium (desert rose), Hoya, Pachypodium (Madagascan palm), Plumeria (frangipani) and a load of stapeliads (carrion flowers). SOH caudicies can be used as grafting stock for stapeliads.
This method is the absolute best and this is why I have 8 silver glory strands and BECAUSE OF THIS VIDEO. they are beautiful! I started with 10 and 2 still havent rooted in but 8 have and their strands each vary between 6-10 inches and some have more than one per "butterfly". I also have some of the strands that touch the spagnum moss that are rooting in now as well. So yes, best method ever! I had also done string of turtles this same way and they are amazing and full clear containers how. I still leave those containers closed and it's humid inside and they are very happy. I didn't leave the silver glory enclosed as long only because they started getting to long so I had no choice but to open the container finally. But I am so glad I came across this video because this is how I do all my strings now 😊
Love this video! I’ve always liked SOH , but whenever i see they sell a fully rooted plant ( which usually is a bit expensive) the top always looked ... bald-ish. After watching this video, I immediately bought 5 variegated cuttings. Its been a bit more than a week now, and i can see some new growths and a couple of roots coming out 😍 cannot wait for it to be a month! Thank you!
So happy to find this video! I admire String of Hearts but they always look a bit skimpy to me so i never got one. Now I know the Jedi mind trick to make them fluffier up top, thanks to you.
I have had this plant on my shelf for over two years and I had no idea what it was called. So excited to learn about it and how to propagate it. Thanks for this video!
This video is perfect timing I was about to pot up my string of hearts yesterday and wasn't sure about weather to leave them in the moss or not.. I'm glad I decided to wait a few more days as this video has just answered my dilemma 😁 thanks a mil x

This video came just in time for me! I just received my first SOH last week I that I purchased from your mom! I believe I bought her last 6 inch pot she had for sale. Thanks girl for sharing with all of us your knowledge and your own personal green journey! 💚

Few months ago you mentioned that method in your video, and i gave it a chance. Oh my gosh it works like a charm. It works with coco choir too (in my country really hard to get spagnam moss)
Thanks so much!! Very helpful. In the beginning of the summer, I divided an very old and larger plant into three smaller ones, and decided to try some stem and leaf cuttings with some of the broken pieces. I’ve got them in vermiculite. The leaves either have little roots, or are forming tubers. The stems, which I left long, are rooting where the leaves are. I’m so tempted to pot them up but it’s only been about a month. I wish I’d put them in regular soil mixed 50/50 with vermiculite. One of my tips with these plants is to grown them in either small or shallow pots that will dry out faster than bigger pots. I’ve had better success in clay pots with this plant. Too much wet soggy soil around their roots/tubers is not good. I also think to let them dry out between watering is best, and won’t kill them. Mine grow great under a skylight. I’d love to see them in their natural, habitat, I hear that the stems grow down to the ground and form huge mats.
Just bought my first String of Hearts plant...noticed it whilst buying flowers from the florist. Thanks for the great video...I'm definitely going to try this! 🌱

Satisfying to watch, the string of hearts is pretty and your other plants, but also you're so pretty 🌼 Yesterday I bought my first not very impressive looking SoH (after accepting that I'm never going to find satisfying exemplars in any garden center) and planned on patiently doing the string propagation, but now... I'm gonna try the butterfly method. Already kind of tried it with my String of Pearls a few months ago, after my mother plant somehow started getting really unwell, and the big baby is looking super healthy and lush, it worked so well putting lots of tiny cuttings on soil instead of unnecessarily long strings. *fingers crossed*
I love you and your videos! Great information in a fun and simple way to understand. One question- What fertilizer do you use in this string of heart propagation? Is it diluted? Thank You!!!
i am taking your advice. I bought 2 strings on ebay, cute them all in pieces and lay on moss , like you said. after 2 weeks i can see already baby leaves growing ;-) when should i moved everything to a pot ?
Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this method of propagating SOH. I watched your informative video and propagated mine in August 2020. Today, it has grown so much and it's even got 2 tubers in the moss! They were exposed to direct sun daily for about 6 hours, and I have to drench the moss every day because they dry so fast. Thankfully, they were used to the sun and were thriving in the moss. I have moved them, moss and all, into a pot with potting mix. :) Thank you again!
If you really want them too grow faster add used coffee grounds in your soil you can also sprinkle on your moss it has magnesium. Potassium. On other properties that are good for plants. It also works for drainage. Acid loving plants love coffee. It also works to keep moles and voles out of your gardens and lawn .
I got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday so I've been resting a lot and watching videos. Thank you for all your great videos Harli. Your plant videos always encourage me to be a better plant mom, are entertaining and get me excited to care for my plants even when I'm not feeling too good. :) ❤❤

Hey!! I just started getting into the plant world and you've become my plant guru! I come to your channel and always find what I'm looking for. I have two questions, I don't have any south facing windows, would east be ok? And will this work with turtles?
One of the strings coming off of my plant is getting too long, I might snip it and give this method a try! Thanks for making this video, it's going to be very helpful!
You are so pretty, with or without make up. Thank you so much for this video. Your work is so great because you really show as you explain what you do. On top of it you showed the whole process with video for when the cuttings were grown and how you planted it. Extremely helpful!!! I can't wait to try this with my string of hearts. Thank you! -Love your work ❣👍🏻
I can't wait to try this!! Quick question - do you put the lid on the tupperware container with the moss and cuttings, or do you leave it out without the lid?
I recently purchased String of Turtles and several strings broke during shipping and unpacking. (Despite that they were beautiful plants.) While I was re-arranging my plant supplies anticipating the new plants I ran across a block of Sphagnum Moss. I couldn't even remember when or why I bought it. Now I know, I am definitely going to try propagating the strings using this method.
If anyone reading this has reptiles or fish I’ve had great success sticking the container left open in my frogs bioactive vivarium bc he has lighting for his plants and it stays super humid! And I water propogate in my fish tanks lol, they love the fish water (I also use the tanks water for my plants when I do water changes)
O.M.GGGGG , just me over here admiring your variegated monstera deliciosa plant... :OOOO Love the video btw.. wondering if you had to cover the container for more humidity? I am planning on doing this method directly in my soil..
I guess it depends on where you live. Where I live the air is quite dry so I had the container in a Ziploc. But I reckon that if you live somewhere humid, you can leave them without covering them
In theory, could you do this with any vining plant? The idea of taking the WHOLE thing out instead of taking it all apart once it's rooted is really satisfying to me.
Hey Harli, 😃 Question: Do you put a lid on over the SOH at first, or just leave it open? Thanks for the info, I haven’t tried the butterfly method, I will now. 😃💚
I did try the moss method recently but...mold....omg the mold, it was everywhere. I transferred the cuttings to soil and they have been fine since. Note to self, in a climate where you already struggle with household mold, don't do moss, just don't.
You can treat the mold with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution. Mold is very common when germinating cacti. I’m sure it’ll work with the propagations
I had the same problem and lost half of my monstera cuttings :(((( i just couldnt get rid of it (i didnt try the hydrogen peroxide thing cause i didnt know about it)
I've been very nervous about propagating my string of hearts, but it's getting a lil leggy, so I think I will try this butterfly method with some succulent mix & moss. Perfect timing!
This is amazing! I just did my first propagation and I’m so excited too see if it works. I couldn’t find liquid root food but I did use a powder so I hope it’s the same thing. I just dipped the ends in it before placing it in the moss. Now I will anxiously wait to see the progress! So easy!! Thanks and Hello from Canada
Thank you for this video! I just started my SOH propagation in sphagnum. How do you water the SOH once they've rooted and you pot them? Bottom or top watering? Also, did you use Liquidirt every watering while propagating?
I realize this comment is dated but I wanted to answer for anyone who happens to be wondering the same thing you asked. I bought mine from a small local plant store. I was told when the leaves closest to the soil are easily bent when gently pinched to water it then from the bottom (they're typically stiff due to water retention)They told me it's prone to rot if you water from the top.
@@justrees4929 Thank you adding for this comment! I also add comments on older videos just in case someone after me finds it helpful! I will keep it in mind when I water my new SOH!
Harli I am two weeks in and the propagation pieces look great. I have had the lid on up until now. After watching the video again should the lid have been off this entire time 🤣
Omg this is genius!! Thank you for sharing!!! I'm so excited to try this!! I did start a sphagnum propagation box a few days ago after watching your video. Today is day three and I already see roots starting on all my clippings in there!
I was going to look for a string of hearts video and here you are. I’m going to do this today with my plant that’s looking a bit thin on top. Thanks so much 😄
What a great idea to propagate the SOH! I normally do the "circle method" stapling the nodes to the soil. I'm gonna try this next! Love your plant videos.
I’m going to be trying this method over winter with my normal, variegated and maybe my silver glory. I have some people that want full, beautiful SOHs from me. Super excited to see how this does. What pains me is cutting strands off my normal since it’s covered in flowers enjoying its summer outside.

Hey Harli, 😃 Question: Do you put a lid on over the SOH at first, or just leave it open? Thanks for the info, I haven’t tried the butterfly method, I will now. 😃💚
No lid
I was wondering this myself
Thanks Harli. 💚😃
Do you happen to know how long should we have no lid on it for?
@@MJ_247 never a lid
This is the most helpful video I have found!!! I love watching your videos
Sphagnum is such a great word to say but it looks like it should be something gross when you see it written 😂
Hahaha truuuue
I suggested to my BF that we make a cartoon called Sphagnum PI. I like to say that word, too. Sphagnum. Sphagnum. Sphhhhag-num.
It’s “ peat moss” I had no idea what Sphagnum was.
It's been a few months since you posted your comment, so how did that work out for you?
@@gingersmith2888 any answer?
@@leah14281 not yet!
Thanks for your creative way of propagation
I can't focus I KEEP STARING AT YOUR EYES
🥺❤️
Harli I am two weeks in and the propagation pieces look great. I have had the lid on up until now. After watching the video again should the lid have been off this entire time 🤣
Thanks for the tip! Would this butterfly method work on the string of pearls?
I bet jt would, but I personally haven’t tried it! Maybe I’ll give it a go & do a video on that as well?
Harli G Ouu please do!
Yes pls try string of pearls an dophins. Love your videos.
Thank you i had no idea how to make plants grow thicker now i will be cutting my long vines to make new plants
Hey !! Just wondering, do you leave it covered or uncovered when doing this preparation?? :)
I want to know the same
Wow! Such a simple way to propagate! Thanks! And your hair is looking gorgeous! 💕🇨🇦
Thanks so much 😄
You look radiantly beautiful!
Thank you so much
You can use the rectangle Chinese takeaway containers which are see through. You can buy these from any of your cheap shops or variety shops.
I just got a bunch of cuttings. Will need to try this method!
Ohhh please keep me posted on them if you do!
What a great idea to propagate the SOH! I normally do the "circle method" stapling the nodes to the soil. I'm gonna try this next! Love your plant videos.
Genius! I can’t wait to try this method. 🤩
I wish I could re-thumbs-up this video every time I watch it 😊
I’m going to be trying this method over winter with my normal, variegated and maybe my silver glory. I have some people that want full, beautiful SOHs from me. Super excited to see how this does. What pains me is cutting strands off my normal since it’s covered in flowers enjoying its summer outside.
There’s nothing I love more than cutting up my plants! Lol
