My great great grandfather was actually a mail carrier on the frontier in Washington State. The never slowing was a real thing regardless of risk to life. But part of that was due to the fact it paid really well and if you missed even a day you were liable to be fired, if you were at all late they would also send a big complaint to the head office. Due to that he had to cross a mountain in a huge blizzard where everyone expected it to be fatal to even attempt. Still the manager in the town on the other side sent a complaint in for him being late and he was helped by the local postal head going to yell at that manager for being a prick. It was in his autobiography and his days as a postal worker were pretty wild.
