I was a student of Madurai Mani iyer,’s sishyar Sethurama iyer.(1953 to 1965)Every year on Vijayadashami day we did Guru mariyadai to MMI and he gave concerts.I had that opportunity and he sang Vellai thamarai Poovil iruppal. O such a golden memories I will never forget in my life🙏
That’s such a wonderful coincidence. My mother Charumathi also learnt under Sethurama IYER and has referred to this event. You must be knowing each other.
I wasn't even born when he passed away. The impact his pure music has made on the next generations is just amazing. MMI and MDR are still my all-time faves.
I sent those comments on behalf of my daughter Capt Rajsri Ramakrishnan who adores listening to your rendition, albeit whenever the soldier finds time! Thank you.
Namaskaram.
When I was a young boy listen
Madurai. Mani. Iyer. Tape and later on CDs. I used to cry in goosebump. Really made me Bliss. .
SIVA SIVA 🙏🏻
On that Note! - Binge watched about 10 episodes. It inspires and exhilarates at once. I say that despite having no capacity to appreciate Carnatic Music. God Bless you Sir.
Extraordinary insights and tidbits of legends of music
Brilliant shot, that is what we explode when ever a cricketer hit 6 or 4. Brilliant note , that is what we experienced whenever we heard Sri Madurai Mani Iyer. For carnatic music that was a golden era.
Many thanks again for insights
The way you expressed makes me a fan to your singing as well as the language .Free flowing . Flawless. Casual. Great man . Admire you.
Great ! Thanks for bringing back our beloved Madurai Mani Iyer.
Sanjay subramanyam's high regards for senior musicians and the way he brings out the essence of their music in short yet faithful charecteristics of the stalwarts, make this series most watchable and nostalgic.
Excellent analysis of Sri MMI. Heard about the maestro from my mother and maternal uncle's who were a big fan of him. Was fortunate to hear Lp records. What a musician par excellence.
On that note S02 - both conception and execution - simply superb!!!
Mani Iyer is who brought me in to the hearing of carnatic music. He is only one and only Mani 🙏
Sanjay ji is a great musician, down to earth person. That’s why his music also sounds devine, extraordinary. 🙏
Dear sir, your presentation on the Great Mani Iyer is spellbinding. As you said I came to know about MMI through T V S concert especially " Eppo varuvaro" & the English note. I had the opportunity
of attending Ragasudha concerts ofTVS ankaranarayanan
God bless him!
The only thing that my brother wanted was to have Sri Madurai Mani Iyer's concert for his marriage reception. Since our parents knew him very well, he also agreed. The Bridegroom was sitting in the front row listening to the maestro! Such was our devotion to his singing
Namaskaram...Now I am 84..I was a great of MMI
Listened his concerts both in Madras and Bombay..Tears welled my eyes while listening to SS's presentation..🙏
TRUE
So also the narration
Thoroughly enjoyed the tribute to Madurai Mani Iyer! Thank you for sharing such thoughtful anecdotes! His style was indeed so unique. A great musician of those days, but whose music will live on for a very, very long time.

You are a master storyteller
My father was a big fan of Mani iyer. He describes iyer’s Swaraj singing as”பவழமல்லி உதிர்வது போல பாடுவார்”
as a vellaikaran who speak tamil conjum conjum i am always fascinated by the way tamils like Sanjayiar switches into Tamil for what i believe is greater intimacy at certain point.....would fun to do a sociological study of folk of his educational and langugage level to analyze when and for why the switch is made, e.g. at 2:40, returning home into Tamil for illustrative example about Sethalapathi Balu....no way that example would be as warm or tender in english....🙂
You have a way of story telling that keeps us wanting for more. 👍Nice anecdotes. Keep them coming.👏👏
Superb
Madurai Mani Iyer's Koluvaiyunnade is haunting. There is a famous AIR recording of the song... it leaves me in a cathartic state every time I listen to it. Thanks for this episode.
My father was a big admirer of mani Iyer. Some songs are patent mani Iyer.
Thank you Sanjay ji for bringing these videos, you r not only a great musician, u r great orator too. We r enjoying every word of these videos. We too r a great fan of MMI. His kalpana swaras, none can beat. My brother sings "eppo varyvaaro", exactly how MMI sings.
MMI and MDR were in a class of their own.
First ever song I listened in classical was by mmi vatapi ,his famous kamboji rtp level of kamboji and essence he bring is amazing. His unique style of singing is his trademark
His rendition of ParimalaRangapathe was excellent. Very rare to hear this song from present day vidwans
The way in which you have narrated is like a voice of me. Since you are genius you explained musically and technically. Hats off to you for bringing the brilliance.
I am moved to tears listening listening to the episode. My late mother would refer to concerts in mani mandapam may god keep you always blessed 🙏
where in trichy
@@rameshvaid9467 I recollect near Srirangam
absolutely true
Dear Sanjay my father Late Ramadoss iyer of Anandathandavapuram used to say Late but living with us the Ganakaladhara Mani iyer was the only legand brought the practice of singing swaras in the same ragha melody which was followed by all other contemprorians.
I am all in tears when someone just talks about Shri MMI as sometimes I won’t be able to consume the divinity and depth in his music just after hearing for 2 minutes. For all that I was born after 7 years of his leaving his mortal remains. I am sure his music will live for several hundred years.
Some how I feel, 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Except for a few people you mention in this episode, and the finesse of raga variations between Charukesi and Sarasangi, this story is MINE ! (And I am sure many others would claim as such)
Excellent. 🙏🙏🙏
I eagerly look forward to your "on that note" episodes. They are fantastic! Thank you.
I am 90 years old. And a fanatic of late Madurai mani Iyer.
Amazing sir. Mesmerizing ...
I've been a great fan of Madurai Mani and had the good fortune of listening to his live concers. Sanjay has brought out all the dimensions of his music despite the fact that he was a small boy when he heard n heard about him. Hats off to him!Very beautifully explained. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
👏👏👏👏👍👍
Great to listen from you Sanjay..
I would like to hear your experience about Dr.Madurai Somu ON THAT NOTE Sir
Sir
The way you explain is very beautiful, awesome 👌
Another soulful video hats off to the way you connect anecdotes needs to be imbibed sir
Not just about the person or your singing. You are a great story teller
great comic story teller! the way he imitates the vocal pattern tone of older man he met on the train....
😂😂😂😂😂
enna pa, Subbu! continues to have!
thing about MMI, i say only from listenging to recordings (my first purchased as cassette in shop in mylapore as a 27 year old in 1983) and from seeing his face in pictures, is on top of the unsurpassed skill, voice, and invention, was some kind of purity of soul...incredible bhava, no trace of the ego one could feel easily in some of his near equals. a few others give that feeling imho--DKP and Ramnad Krishnan e.g. Perhaps they were blessed with the right balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, enough of the kapha to balance the Pitta that gives the drive to perfection, but also the ego, and to balance the light ethereal sprituality its easy for Vata to approach, but easy to get lost in. Sattva comes to mind for those 3....but who knows? And our Sanjay Sahr? Though full of grey hair and weighed down by accolades, here he is, still excited like a 10 year old boy....Inshallah he will stay this way no matter what;, its a great blessing....Shalom....
you spoken so well on the great Master Madurai Mani Iyer. prompts me to listen to you again and again. The first time I heard him was when I was just 10 years old and I sat in the front row and heard MMI beginning the concert with Ramabhkakti. Listening to his Cutcheries when he was alive is livid in my memory. Now for the past several years, I listen to one song a day of Sriman MMI. No amount of Namaskarams to the great MMI is enough to thank him for pleasing us. Menakshi memudham. Oh What a great Man. Eppa varuvarao- ini varamattar. In his obituary, someone wrote "MADURAMANA MAYAY". How apt!!
Brilliant articulation about the irreplaceable MMI! 🙏
Very True! Madurai Mani was a phe omenon! Saipremi
Pls make an 'On that song' and tell stories for an hour.
Genius madurai mani IYER..
I like how the camera zooms in and out to increase thw impact of the lines.
Got reminded of our Mayavaram days, and Sri Mani Iyers concerts in a small hall, in the famous Kaaluyagudi hotel. Though way back, very impressionable age of our days over there.Great anecdotes
Namaskarams. I am Mrs.Sundari Sekhar daughter of Coimbatore. Dakshnamurthy. I remember having attended this concert and the applause after the rendition of Eppovaruvaro and Englishnote. Very interesting episodes!!
Super
Thank you Sir for helping us go through those wonderful days ...as if we are travelling back in time. .. Thanks again for extending the On that Note to 7 minutes
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍
Respected Sir,
Every episode of yours transports us to a different world......அப்பிடியே உருகி போய் விடறேன்......an non pareil singer and a brilliant speaker and story teller.......வாழ்க Sir, வாழ்க வளமுடன்!
Congratulation Sanjay Subramanyam. Excellent analytical presentation about the genius Madurai Mani Iyer. I am a great fan of Madurai Mani Iyer.
1) He was indeed the most popular admired musician time to reckon with.
2) A great singer with unmatched quality enriched with utmost perfection.
3) Amazing alabana depicting the essence of the ragam in its true perspective.
4) Be it Thodi, Kambothi, Karagarapriya, Biravi, he used to deliver with enormous weight and depth.
5) Expansive and exhaustive sangathis with subtle variations.
6) Very elaborate and well structured Niraval that would be scintillating and thought-provoking.
6) Super fast swaram and extraordinary manodharman, yet landing in perfect sruthi and layam a real treat to ears.
7) The application of Gamagam was his specialty that used to mesmerize the audience.
8) An Icon of Carnatic music; he is indeed a source of inspiration and a roll model to today's musicians.
9) His music is so powerful and penetrative such that the audience gets completely engrossed into it.
10) His master pieces include Eppo Varuvaro, Maa Janaki, Chakkani Raja, Mariverathi, Kapaali, Sarasasamadhana, English Note.......and so on. Great. Who can sing like him. There is no comparison at all.
Listening to Madurai Mani Iyer Kacheri is an aesthetic divine experience that is literally beyond expression.
PRANAMS TO THE GREAT SOUL 🙏
Excellent. The way you detailed the genius of Madurai Mani Iyer is awesome. 👍
Great Mr Sanjay I didn't know that apart from Carnatic music, you are also a mimicry artist. Why not mimicry ragam,😁
Thank you, Sanjay, for these videos. You are an inspiration. And the sheer joy of listening to these stories!
Mr. Sanjay
I viewed this video about Ganakaladharar Sri Madurai Mani Aiyer.
For rasikas of my generation
he is God of Carnatic Music.
The only Ganakaladharar.
He impressed young and old alike with his mesmerizing music.
He was and is even today
" The People's choice".
On the note episodes are like individual Amat Chitra Katha Mahabharata series books….you listen to a story and then wait with anxiety and excitement for the next one. Which when Mahabharata was released by ACK, it was one book every few weeks. The waiting was frustrating and the reading was sheer pleasure. This is the same…..
MMI, extraordinary and amazing a musician.
No words are enough to describe him.
Also its my view that no musician could encapsulate the soul of a raagam in the shortest time possible. Only a Genius can do that.
Two men who were never part of any politics were MMI and MDR.
Vv good
So fascinating..
I am aged 62 and as you have elaborated about Mani Iyer singing it took me to a time where i used to eagerly wait for the concert of Mani Iyer in AIR. Unique style and extraordinary interpretation of swara. Once you hear a shanmugapriya of Mani Iyer you will never forget that ragam. Mahan
Succinct recollection of a classical past. Not only the pastness of that past but of its presence in and through the genius of TVS, and Tiruvaalangkaadu cousins Amma recalls enjoys all that Vichitra raayar ahraharam ..bhash agraharam, . Mayavaram!

explanation & highly respectable language.hats offMr.Sanjay
It was an excellent presentation about the genius Madurai Mani Iyer. I used to attend his Rockfort concerts in Tiruchi. What a legend he is.
Thanks Sanjay for this. You have taken me back to my childhood days when everyone in my village used to praise Madurai Mani Iyer and a lot of rasikas congregate at our house Thinnai to listen to Madurai Mani Iyer singing in AIR programme. One special request, why do not you perform a concert mimicking Mani Iyer as a mark of a tribute to that great musician. It will be a great opportunity for this generation of people to get to know what a great musician Shri Madurai Mani Iyer.
Yeppo varuvaro song will always bring tears in my eyes
Oh, what a fascinating and interesting talk about Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Madurai Mani Iyer and his music by Sangeetha kalanidhi Sri Sanjay Subrahmanyan! It brought back memories of my Sangeetha Kala Acharya Sri T N Bala. During my music lessons, Bala mama (we all called T N Bala as Balamama) often spoke about his guru Sri Mani Iyer. It took me several years to understand and appreciate what my teacher said about Mani Iyer Sir. He often burst in tears while he talked bout his teacher and said emphatically that there was no musician comparable to his guru. Bala mama's wife, Mrs. Susheela Bala, was the same way: they both revered Mani Iyer. My teacher could even sing like MMI, imitating his voice. I learnt Carnatic vocal from Balamama for nearly thirty years. Thank you very much for uploading this video.

You are right Sanjayji, In my young days (now pushing 85) in Bombay in the 1960s we were a group of die-hard Mani Iyer fans. I used to give an excuse and attend two days Shanmukhananda concerts (then) of our idol. Once you hear you are enslaved. I'm a fan of yours and noticed Iyer's influence in you many a time. Your Note is tear-jerking for oldies.
I am 82 years old.I was a Bhaktha of Madurai Mani Iyer.He sang for my wedding reception on June 17 1965.My wife learnt music from Tiruvengadu Jayaraman.MMI music is eternal
I am huge fan of Sri MMI. Thanks for bringing this video.
My father was a great Madura Mani Iyer fan. He used to have tapes of Mani iyer and listen, he could imitate the innate Mani iyer's phrases. Your talk brought back nostalgic memories. Thanks a lot
Sanjay sir, please do MD Ramanathan on your next Episode 🙏
This triggers me to hear MMI again :) wonderful

Nice presentation. I was able to visualise Chitoor Subramaniam Pilliai in your song Mammala Gathama
Venkatakrishan s/o flute Vidwan late t.K radhakrishnan and cousin brother of Mahalingam at U S who is known to you
I was and continue to be an avid admirer of Madurai Mani Iyer. I have had the privilege of listening to this legend in person.
I have been a fan of sri madura mani Iyer and have been hearing his songs fro 1960 and is byngods grace continuing. What u surmised is quite true.even though TVs or Surya Prakash renders his style of music by imbibing his archives, we will have to yet see a musician of sri m.m.iyers unique presentation.tks for bringing to light why u thought about this legend
But Madhura mani Ayyar was so irrespective of lyrics and diction. It’s kind of flat singing. Only ‘swarams’ and the singing was perfect. I cannot stand 5 minutes
🌹👌👍🏆
Excellant portrayal of the mastero madurai mani iyer - thanks sanjay sir
Soo nice to here this u r just great and we r also a biiig fan of Madhurai mani iyer d legend i like the swara kalpana of Brovabharama beautiful 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘

Great Sanjay. Thank you for remembering Madurai mani Iyer. I am a big fan of Madurai mani Iyer. I would have listen to his concert live atleast 25 times. I love his Eppo varuvaro, kandan karunai puriyum, Sarasa samadana, his sankaraparanam notes my god un believable legend.
All the facets of the great Madurai Mani Iyer is very well captured by Sanjay. I myself got attracted to Carnatic music by listening to the great MMI . In those days AIR broadcast many concerts of MMI. Thanks Sanjay for the treat. You deservedly are one of the great musicians. God bless you.
Expertise without bhakthi and anushtaanam is useless. Why are you not wearing anything on your forehead?😢
