I like the top idea, it keeps all that commotion in the tank. I've been using a filter with just filter floss to polish some tanks.

I've found i take my hob filters and fill them up with lava rock and some plants. Water stays crystal clear

Yes. I've done that too. The only issues I've ever had with that kind of setup is when the roots get into the impeller and stop it. Thanks for coming by!
