It used to be a World Record was the primary criteria for AOY voting. Even a couple of 3-time Olympic gold medalists were left off the list (Faith Kipyegon and Ryan Crouser).
I can see why Africans are up in arms, by any metric Beatrice Chebet is more deserving than some other finalists because her accomplishments span two events. Not sure what more she would have to have done to get on the shortlist, break the 5000m WR as well? Plus, she's not been the recipient of this award before whereas SML and Nafi Thiam have won in previous years. This is probably why Africans are less upset that Kipyegon was left off the list as she's also been honoured in a previous year. There's an argument to be had that if the criteria for being considered as a finalist is a WR then they need to expand the number of finalists to the number of people who broke WR this year.
“Doesn’t deserve it” is an absurd statement. And to answer your question: Maybe because she just broke the world record for the sixth time... at the Olympics at that. She’s a unicorn. The other athletes are excellent but Sydney’s LEVEL of excellence hasn’t been seen before. She’s the Bolt of her event. Saving her peak for breaking the record at the OLYMPICS is definitely worthy of an award. Should a less accomplished athlete get the award over her simply because she raced more?…i think not. You could’ve came up with a better argument than that
@@majestic4787 Never been seen? Mondo is more deserving just this year. 3 World records in his event and a solid 100 meter dash for someone who does the pole vault. Also do we really trust an athlete trained by Kersee to be clean. It is not a guarantee that they are doping but he is a very suspicious coach. Furthermore avoiding frequent racing is good for dealing with in comp testing.
@@majestic4787 Sidney has one substantial championship gold at the OG where she broke her own WR. Compare this to Chebet who won double gold at the OG as well as the 5000m DL final and broke the 10000m WR previously held by Letesenbet Giday. By any metric her accomplishments are greater and she deserves this more.
@@skillissue3574 What are you getting on about?? Mondo is a man. They aren’t even competing against each other for the award. Men’s and women’s awards are two separate thing and one of each are getting this award. And my argument there was that it’s never been seen in HER EVENT. Some of the other athletes on the list are obviously unicorns. I even mentioned one of the best talent that has been seen in the sport (Usain Bolt). Each of these other people on the nominee list have also been unicorns. My initial argument is that Sydney does belong on that list and it’s outright senseless for someone to say that someone with such ability does not belong because she IS one of the greatest. And you completely downplayed her accomplishments for the season as well. I never said she should win it, I said she belongs on that list And questioning her character just because of who her coach is, is also absurd. Carl Lewis coaches a whole college track team, are they all cheaters because they went to their dream school with him coaching there?? No. On top of that, Sydney definitely just has more support. Whether some people like it or not, she brings more publicity to the sport and will definitely always be a favorite for most. I think that helps her win too because we see her face all over ads and we hear more about her than the other athletes. It just is what it is. I do think that the other athletes need some more recognition.
@@NelleBligh333like I said, no one said she should just win the award. Me and the other person were having a conversation about her belonging on the list because they decided that a world and Olympic record holder doesn’t even “deserve” to be viewed for the award. Im not comparing her to them to try and determine a winner, that’s not even what this conversation is about.
That 7:17.55 performance was SOMETHING ELSE

Chebet should have been in the list !
We are not upset, we put Chebet and Kipyegon on the "out of this world" list...😂🇰🇪❤️
SML does not deserve it. Why reward someone who does not race.
