I love how the fight ends. He doesn't fight the dragon, he takes it as his own. He doesn't strike down his past self, he accepts it but moves forward. Long story short, he's a member of a race that reincarnates when they die. That's his previous incarnation. He did something horrible that should have called for death, but given his status and reputation up to that point, he was forcibly reincarnated instead and exiled. The new him isn't the one who committed the crime, but he is still paying for the sin.
Really enjoy the way you analyze these shorts and other music videos compared to what most people do and just react to it. Allows for us watchers to understand some deeper meaning that we might have missed in the original video. Great work and keep going Philip!
Dan Heng is a vidyadhara which is a long-life dragon like species who can reincarnate, the one who is he fighting is his previous reincarnation Dan Feng. Dan Feng was previous High Elder of the vidyadhara who committed a great sin and got banished from his homeland. Dan Heng had to carry the sins of his previous reincarnation even tho Dan Feng was not there anymore and in this animated short he finally decided to face those sins and move forward.
His crime was something to do with the Transmutation Arcanum, making a giant dragon monster, making Bailu (under my interpretation of his companion mission at least), and "stealing immortality" according to his sentence under Xianshou law
He is a Dragon who Reincarnated, thats what they do. His past self messed up big time. But Dang Heng is innocent. He told his previous self that he is the past and wont follow him into the Future. Spectacular inner monologe. Best Star Rail Short so far, imho.
Ooh, I hadn't noticed the green-vs-blue symbolism! That reminds me that Dan Feng has been mentioned together with specifically the colour 'emerald' before, that's pretty neat. I wonder if they'll keep the green association with Dan Heng going forward, or maybe a shade of turquoise instead 👀. Edit: Ahh, that the dragon follows Dan Heng's spear also reminds me of the, like, paper-dragon-on-a-lot-of-sticks that you can use to twirl them around like a ribbon during festivals.
Most interesting part is that we don't really know what his past self did. Only it was so terrible that his people still hate him even in new incarnation. By the law new form should be free of any accusations of the past.
You can infer A LOT from reading the backstory on some relics apparently. There's a video I've seen that goes into it and explains exactly what Dan Feng did in the past. Much of the lore is hidden apparently.
He is part of a race created by a Dragon God who embodies the concept of "permanence". When a member of this race "die" they turn into an egg and they are reborn as a child without memories of their past. In time they will get some dreams that reveal parts of their previous life, but in essence they have a totally new life to live as a new version of themselves. The character in the video is a reincarnation of the High Elder, one of the most important figures for this race. In the past, he comitted a great sin ( Not fully revealed what he did in the story yet ) and was sentenced to eternal banishment and a special "forced rebirth". Nowdays, most people still have a grudge against him despite he not longer being his past self.
I can't believe you interpreted the context correctly before even listening to the guy reading the scroll when Dan Heng was sinking. You're crazy detailed and definitely experienced in the conveyance of meanings in animations (I also watched your Jing Yuan's reaction). And I definitely love this one the most from all the other animated shorts. Love your analysis, and this guy is definitely the shadow (past self before being forcibly reincarnated) of Dan Heng and did some heinous crimes which haunted Dan Heng, before he finally absolved himself from his sins after some events in the game. Also, his past self was extremely powerful (what they call the high elder), and how he was like a gifted prodigy before he committed those crimes. I guess this is after the events in the game, where he finally confronted his past self for the last time, before 100% accepting and moving on with his new comrades (the pink haired girl at the end).
If you haven't yet, I'm REALLY looking forward to you reacting to "Myriad Celestia Trailer: Fables About the Stars Part 1" as well. It's very beautifully made.
The people drinking at the start are the high cloud quintet The first is jingyuan, the last of them who is still sane The second is jingliu, jingyuan's master who have changed her mind The third is baiheng, who I heard had a tragic death The fourth is yinxing or "blade", at the time he was an old man, but at some point, he became mara struck( an imortal curse) and lost his mind The last one is dan feng, his reincarnation "dan heng" have to pay for his sin, forever banishment
IIRC it was implied that Dan Feng helped Yingxing become immortal. According to the dialogue between 2 blue "ghosts", Dan Feng allowed Yingxing into Scalegorge Waterscape for 2 hours, presumably to collect ingredients for the elixir (specifically - a small amount of liquid from a Vidyadhara egg). Similar thing happened with Todd, who used a false premise to send the Trailblazer away so he could remain unsupervised in Scalegorge Waterscape.
His past sin isnt fully explained but its somewhere in the realm of attempting to reincarnate/revive his fallen friend he lives in a world that highly respects the natural cycle of life and death because they found if you grant a short-lived species eternal life they will be struck with a fate worse than death (similar to zombiefication) The zombiefication itself cant be avoided but you can regain your consciousness if you ingest a vidyadhara bodypart/fluid and danheng is a vidyadhara If you consume vidyadhara bodypart/fluid while youre still mortal you will de-age until you turn back into an embryo
Anyone notice that there are images in the giant shadow? The scene where they're standing in the water. It looks like you can see a person. Anyone else notice and can break it down?
6:47 "we're both suffering. why do we fight?" its his internal struggle, the learned struggle also Dan Feng likely believed, as Dan Heng did until 12:40, that he would never be able to have a proper (free) future and yet here he is oh I previously said echor when I meant ichor. more unrelated, I really hope you do videos on White Night and the new (4-11-24) Aventurine video
So about the group of 4 in the beginning from left to right: Jing Yuang - current general who we've meet before | Jingliu - Jing Yuang's master who succumbed to the Mara madness (it seems) | Baiheng - not much confirmed info rn (people suspect she was transformed into the same race Den is, and she now exists as the character Bailu) | And the man who Blade used to be. Danny boi here did something in his past life that turned Blade from a mortal man into who he is now, and Jingliu further actually tortured Blade by killing him over and over again for reasons not yet known.
Dan Heng is part of dragon race. They don't have kids but when they reach end of their lifes they are reborn. His previous reincarnation used methods they use to make his dying friend immortal, but due that whole this circle of reincarnation went terribly wrong. Person who sentenced him is his another close friend and whole this affair broke their group (well some other things also went wrong).
You've mentioned before possibly playing Star Rail if it came to PS5, so I'm just letting you know they've opened either pre-registers or a beta for playstation.
Basically Dan Heng is a Vidyadhara which is a long-life species that self reproduces (reincarnating). Dan Feng committed a sin that was supposed to be punishable by death. But instead got reincarnated, it wasn’t an actual rebirth though since it was a molten one. Basically he just got de-aged and lost his memories. So Dan Heng is still Dan Feng but he himself thinks that he just got reincarnated and has nothing more to do with Dan Feng.

Actually the Fox girl is the only one who is dead. Two are cursed. One became a general. And one was forced to re incarnate and become banished...
