I played this back in the day with a Japanese Cartridge but gave up on it because I couldn't understand what millions of items do so I replayed it from start to end on Zsnes with English Translation version, don't think seiken densetsu 3 came out officially in English, same for Tales of Phantasia, and bahamut Lagoon
I remember when the only way to play this game outside Japan was through the SNES emulator, and fans passionate enough to translate the whole thing to English so everyone could enjoy. This and Chrono Trigger were the first games I became truly obsessed with. Chrono Trigger has the better story, but SD3 has more replay value solely due to the class changes and character stories. For anyone looking to pick this up, I recommend a Duelist Duran-Bishop Charlotte-Grand Divina/Archmage Angela as your first party. With Duelist and Bishop, you get access to every single Saber spell (imbues weapon with elemental effect for bosses weak to it) except Dark Saber (which IIRC I rarely used outside of one boss). Duran is your bog standard tank regardless of class change, Charlotte is the fastest and best healer in the game as Bishop, and Grand Divina/Archmage is the most powerful offensive magic user with the best variety of elemental spells.
While that's true it doesn't completely alleviate the issue There isn't an option for it to switch targets on target death so you can find yourself in some janky angles in multiman fights you have to re lock on manually after every enemy defeated which can get you killed in a bad spot
To be fair the game never tells you and when you look at the commands it doesn't show either, it's very strange. And I swear I tried during the demo the right stick and it did nothing. Tried again when I heard there was a lock-on and I was like "ooohhhhhh it changes everything". It's very bizarre the tutorial doesn't tell you about it during the very first battle considering how awful the camera is by default.
One of my favourite games of all time, up there with FFVI and Chrono Trigger in the same era. Great review, and I can appreciate why the reviewer feels more side quests can be added to flesh up the world better. Consider how well FF7R did with that, ToM could have done a bit more on that. That said, everything else is just so darn charming of this game, I can overlook that. One thing I wish the reviewer had mentioned is that insane amount of replay value of this game. Everyone should at least play the game twice to get all the stories of each of the characters, let alone trying out different classes and character combinations. A game that we've waited for 25 years, so happy it finally here.

The only 'sidequest' in the game (at least from playing the original) is farming the seeds that give your characters their ultimate gear once you've done the second class change. You could only get the seeds from one specific enemy that only shows up in the endgame dungeon, and it was down to RNG on whether you'd get the full gear first time around or the same pieces twenty times in a row. But it's not really a sidequest, more that JRPG trope of 'Do you want to spend ten hours getting everyone's ultimate gear to make the final boss more of a cakewalk?'.

Each character has at least 2 types of ending, depending on who is on your team. Also depending on who you choose as your main. It's telling when you look at my collection of Switch games and see a bunch of stuff that resembles what I used to play as a kid. Shmups, rpgs, action platformers, dungeon crawlers etc.
Ashtarte no it’s not a remaster. What do you consider a remaster? Something like the N sane trilogy where the only difference is the visuals and some changes to control? Because what many people define a remake as is something created from the ground up which this is and so is the n sane trilogy while remasters are just ports with very little added.
I actually downloaded this on Steam and I'm loving it. But I do agree with the camera angle - I'm using a Logitech Rumblepad and it's driving me a little batty. I was hoping to lock the camera, but I guess you can't. One note, with the unnecessary dialogue of NPCs in town, you can just look for a star in each town to find where the important dialogue is and aside from having to talk briefly with shop keepers, you can ignore everyone else and just go to the starred peeps for key info to move the game forward.
Agreed. This was a legendary co-op game from a time when RPG co-op was hardly a thing. Why would they take that away? That’s one of the features that made the mana series so memorable..
Something tells me that, given current game release cycle trends, there will be some sort of a patch released for the game which adds side quests and fixes the framerate issues, eventually.
@xLttPx I mean, was the 16-bit Trials of Mana unique? Because if so, this remake is also unique since it classifies part of the game. The game is truly beautiful.
@@fellowmemer5693 I don't think that's at all how that works. The original stood out as being one of the most beautiful 16 bit games of the era as well as one of very few with an action approach to combat. Not dissing the remake, but it's coming out in a time where we have so many action JRPGs to choose from it's placement is moot. Charming game, but the remake is not at all unique
When I played the original version on Switch I didn't know picking certain heroes would lock me out of any kind of healing magic and only found pretty far past the beginning.
"You have to deal with pointless dialogue from npcs, but there are no side quests so you don't even need to talk to them!" So... you don't have to deal with the pointless dialogue, then?

What, no comments about how the game took the item wheel and presented it in such a way that really FEELS like a modern reinterpretation? I wish more games did this... The hotkeys seem almost redundant because they don't give you that extra time to think
There is 3 "different story line and bunch of antagonist". For having the most story element I recommand to play like this (Angela with Duran), (Charlotte with Kevin), (Lise with Hawkeye's). The third character that you choose is the less important.
Man I wish this game had something like Very Hard mode because it's way too easy even on hardest difficulty. But hey that means that even games journalists can beat this game!
I agree with most of the the things in this review except for the need of side quests. This games rewards players for exploring around with items and newly added collectibles.
Also worth mentioning that NONE of the dialogue has been modernized so some of the characters sound, well uh, awful. Kevin and Charlotte in particular have their character quirks amped to 11.
I wish the Camera would follow behind you _outside_ of combat... but yet let you move it at the same time (it shouldn't follow if the player is actively trying to move it).
Awesome game. Anybody else's Dash button not working though for the Switch version ? No matter how many times I press the left analog stick, my character's speed does not change.
I got the Dash to work. For some reason I had to change the controls for dash to use the right analog stick instead of the left one and than dash started working.

It's telling when you look at my collection of Switch games and see a bunch of stuff that resembles what I used to play as a kid. Shmups, rpgs, action platformers, dungeon crawlers etc.
I want a Switch with the dual screens of the DS and U.
Does this game run smoothly? It looks like it has frame pacing issues from the video. (I'm asking the PS4/PC performance, don't have a Switch)
Runs smoothly
Looks fantastic! I’ll be digging in to this after I finish up Final Fantasy VII.
I was feeling bummed out after finishing FF7...then I saw this and looks like my next AAA ARPG adventure is about to begin..! :D
This is not a triple A RPG release. This is a very, very faithful remaster. Probably too faithful in some ways like dialogue.
Definetly not AAA lol
Not triple A at all haha. Final fantasy 7 remake is triple A. This looks like a budget title. Still looks decent though
We need a Chrono Trigger remake more than this please Square Enix !
Absolutely
No local coop = no buy
Why even remake it if they're gonna take away features
Just release it 4 months later but have a full game
Agreed. This was a legendary co-op game from a time when RPG co-op was hardly a thing. Why would they take that away? That’s one of the features that made the mana series so memorable..
No one plays local anymore dude
local coop would have been a nice extra sure but... i wouldn't have had time to find / visit someone to play with anyway...
Something tells me that, given current game release cycle trends, there will be some sort of a patch released for the game which adds side quests and fixes the framerate issues, eventually.
can i play this game in co-op mode like snes version? i hope i can play this with my friends.
Now this game looks beautiful.
The graphics look amazing and the music is truly awesome.
This is a great and unique game.
I wouldn’t say unique.
edge lord I think we have the same relative interest...I've been seeing you everywhere lol.
Edge on!
@xLttPx I mean, was the 16-bit Trials of Mana unique? Because if so, this remake is also unique since it classifies part of the game. The game is truly beautiful.
ohitsmerenz In what way is it not unique?
@@fellowmemer5693 I don't think that's at all how that works. The original stood out as being one of the most beautiful 16 bit games of the era as well as one of very few with an action approach to combat. Not dissing the remake, but it's coming out in a time where we have so many action JRPGs to choose from it's placement is moot.
Charming game, but the remake is not at all unique
Hope the Star Ocean series will get some full remake love too. I do own this and am loving it though 16 hours in 3 days.
When I played the original version on Switch I didn't know picking certain heroes would lock me out of any kind of healing magic and only found pretty far past the beginning.
"You have to deal with pointless dialogue from npcs, but there are no side quests so you don't even need to talk to them!"
So... you don't have to deal with the pointless dialogue, then?
One The best SNES rpg’s next to chrono trigger and ffvi, I must have replayed the game 5-6 times due to how replayable it was. And every single
Run felt epic
I need to try this game a 8 score is a bit hith for a remake
I've never played trails of mana but I have seen a few of my twitch friends play it the og one. I'm defently looking forward to giving it a go. :)
Can't wait to play this! Got this sucker on pre order.
I love this game, if i had to say something bad of it, it would be the english voices but that is easily fixed by changing them to jp, truly a masterpiece came back from the past
How long is it ?
What, no comments about how the game took the item wheel and presented it in such a way that really FEELS like a modern reinterpretation? I wish more games did this... The hotkeys seem almost redundant because they don't give you that extra time to think
When did The Completionist start narrating IGN reviews?
heh
Whats the length of this game
There is 3 "different story line and bunch of antagonist". For having the most story element I recommand to play like this (Angela with Duran), (Charlotte with Kevin), (Lise with Hawkeye's). The third character that you choose is the less important.
Third shall always be charlotte for heals
They need to remake legend of mana
What I am thinking as well! I love that game!
That’s what I’m saying! The music and art was so captivating back on the ps1
Secret's of mana
@@melxb and I didn't know they remade that or forgot smh must have been trash
@@melxb >calling the SoM remake faithful
lolwut
Love this game! Beautiful remake! Well done Square Enix!
Man I wish this game had something like Very Hard mode because it's way too easy even on hardest difficulty. But hey that means that even games journalists can beat this game!
Coop removed right?
It's on sale eshop 24.99 for a few more hours! Just bought it thanks to Seth Macys review, he seems like a cool dude that knows these types of games.
0:53 0 stars ripped off minecrafts nether biome
Pretty sure I remember a lock on for combat in the demo...
Dunno what switch he using, but mine isn’t having any issues with frame rate on this game.
I watched a video of Charlotte's voice and...yikes. Just a big old ball of Y I K E S.
If I remember correctly she’s the oldest playable character!
@@kainthedragoon8081 She is? I thought she was the youngest (15, looks 8 and talks like a two year old because she's half Elf)?
I've just started my game, 15 mins in, and my only gripe is the running. I feel like the character is running with lead shoes on.
This is an great Remake to a classic Super Nintendo JRPG btw great review IGN
For a second there I got scared. Thought my headphones were going out.
The music and sound effect are great!!
Cons for me was more prefer the original cute version of character and enemies.
I never played the original game. Might pick this up when it goes on sale.
Which game should I buy animal crossing New horizons or trials of mana
i never played this game before but i'm hype for this. definitely my kind of game.
I might buy it today something new
Always an classic since played Emulator fan-translation of Trials of Mana, enjoying the remake of is awesome.
Thanks for review, gonna try this game.
I wish the Camera would follow behind you _outside_ of combat... but yet let you move it at the same time (it shouldn't follow if the player is actively trying to move it).
ill get this after im done with ff7
Do you have to play other games in series to play this remake?
Anoose Gaming thanks
a much better review than the gamespot one, I can even agree the camera angles are a little wonky at times.
Awesome game. Anybody else's Dash button not working though for the Switch version ? No matter how many times I press the left analog stick, my character's speed does not change.
I got the Dash to work. For some reason I had to change the controls for dash to use the right analog stick instead of the left one and than dash started working.
I played the demo today. I actually dont think the camera is that bad. You can target enemies by pressing down the right stick.
I've always wanted to play an rpg from aisia with this kinda combat focused more to the real time
is there couch coop?
The switch is basically a jrpg workhorse
I wish they had crammed just a bit more power into it so the ports ran better.
Justin Dodd me too but some companies are making a great job porting some games
Indie ports are mostly really bad unluckily
I kinda see the switch to be an Indie workhouse, ps4, PC is what have most JRPG's.
Crazy to think the Wii U only had like 3 RPGs while the switch has so many it's hard to keep up
3:35 no compelling reason to talk to npcs? What about abilities you may get when you talk to them? not compelling enough?
@QUEENDOM would you need sidequests to complete the game if there were any?
Zephyrasable lmao I’m with ya, just beat the game, never haved played the original and man it’s one of my favorite Jrpgs I played.
around @2:30 they complain about the camera... A) it's really easy to manually control the camera, even mid combat & B) you could always just toggle the camera lock on feature to automatically do it...
I’m a new gamer and this game was a perfect introduction to the RPG gaming style. In my opinion.
