I have seen the occasional tournament videos still being done at Japanese arcades. But it is usually between 2 players, and a very limited amount of people there to emcee the tournament (usually 2-3 people, not counting the 2 players).

I hope so too but man, it's gonna be even less profitable for the owners- fewer machines spaced 6' apart, frequent sanitizing, maybe latex gloves for all customers. I really hope our barcades in LA (82 and Button Mash) survive! Ganbatte minna!

Mikado looks soooo sick. I love 3s, Darkstalkers, and many other old games much more than modern. Even got mocked by locals here for wanting to competitively play dead games. 😓 Ik nostalgia is alive and well there considering Godzilla and Gundam monuments.
Anywho, I never realized the point of head-to-head was to be impersonal (I thought it was to have more room/feel less cramped) but that makes PERFECT sense considering Japan seems to be such an avoidant/private sort of society.
R.I.P. Kawasaki Warehouse. Certainly the most aesthetic arcade in existence.

there were more than 20 thousands arcades 30 years ago, but now only 4 thousand survived in all over Japan.
after COVID-19, so many of small ones would close down their business; sadly.
arcades featuring 80s, 90s, or 00s retro video game now become somewhat museum like.
when you had chance of visiting them, don't just stay and watch, but play some to help them survive.

Visiting Japan has been something I’ve wanted to do for many many years... my trip was supposed to be this week but world events made me feel it was wiser to cancel trip (and I’m in the states so I don’t think Japan is letting foreigners in at moment, which I totally understand and respect)... sad but my inconvenience is very minor in the grand scheme of things. One day I will go... but I wanted to say thank you for always posting videos that make me see it the way I would love to. I can’t go this summer, but watching this video almost made me feel like I did :)

What song is playing at 21 minutes? I know its a Street fighter remix but I cant place the original song name or game. Its awesome that you have the option to go to an arcade after work not to mention so many. I live in NYC and all the good arcades practically closed what felt like overnight and now we just have Barcades popping up.

  • @Hmongboi228

When I was stationed in Misawa, Japan from 2009-2013 I saw many arcades but honestly, if you've seen one, you've seen them all. They're pretty much all the same. A boat load of games combined with some super rigged "claw" games.
    Pros:
    -large selection of games
-Unique games that will never make it to the west. For example, they had games that required the player to have special cards/a deck to put on the interactive flat screen which would reflect on the arcade game. The only way to get these cards was to buy the booster packs with commons, uncommons , a rare and possibly ULTRA rares to use on the arcade interface. Better cards = easier game. Better cards also = more money spent obtaining those cards along with paying the 1-200 yen expense of playing the arcade game.
    Cons:
-ALL games usually cost 100 yen (basically in simple conversion 100 yen ~ $1 USD) or more
even OLD games like Street Fighter 2 Turbo.. (Believe it or not, people were still playing old games like this!)
-100 yen games were on the "bargin" end. Other games like the GUNDAM PODS (cool cuz they were large and you actually stepped into a "Gundam" unit, were multiplayer linked across the country) cost around 4-500 yen to play for 10 minutes! Simplified, the Gundam first person pods were just basically first person shooters..
I NEVER saw a game that was under 100 yen.. :( It's easy to blow your paycheck there, since games are at the minimum 100 yen to play but then again, I'm sure many Japanese people have. Of course, I didn't blow my paycheck there..

I went around arcades in Japan quite a bit last year. Not everything is as good as it looks, I noticed a lot of simulators and very few people playing with the "old" beat´em ups (SF, Tekken above all). So in many arcades I noticed that the volume of the popular games were so high that you could barely hear the sound of the "old school" coin-op´s you chose to play with.

Well I guess the newer Samurai Spirits was an arcade game, as well as SNK's Tag Team all females fighting game, my guess is KoF XIV was also an arcade machine over there in Japan, keeping the tradition of their fighting games seeing arcade releases first before home consoles (or maybe they released at the same time the last 3 games). Looks like they run off the NESica services that run KoF 98 UM and KoF 02 UM. Even Street Fighter Zero 3 and the Darkstalker games also run off the same service. My guess is you can put several arcade games in, and is cheaper to run as you don't need all those PCB's or arcade cabs to run them, as they all run in 1 cabinet.
