Large Ship Clarity Thinks it Doesn't Need a Pilot and it Goes Wrong in Teignmouth

- On Saturday, the 26th of November, the ship Clarity headed to Teignmouth Harbour. The pilot was helping the ship in front of Clarity, but the captain got impatient and decided to bring her in without the pilot. It didn't go well.

The captain called for port but they gave him Maderia instead .

You can't help but admire the reversing and the bow thruster saved the day. Do ships have parking sensors ? Lol
It never ceases to amaze me when these ships come in to Teignmouth, it really is something to watch. I’m glad this didn’t turn out worse, hopefully very little damage to the moored vessels and moorings.
What do they bring in and out?

I would of loved to of heard to radio comms for this I bet the pilots and harbour master would not of been impressed.
My teacher would tell me that a ship does not "Think". The captain might, though in such cases, usually the problem is that he doesn't actually do so.
Your teacher should have teached you also that lots of technical ánd nautical issues do occur on ships during situations you do not want them to happen.
@@janvisser2223 He did, or at least similar to that, but nobody is foolish enough to try that as a video title.
@@MyshaM. Reading the title better, I now understand what you meant with your initial comment. (English is not my mother tongue) And besides that, I was more focussed to the video itself and thinking what the crew was doing when they realised that the vessel was not doing what it supposed to do.
Wow did you see the power of those bow side thrusters working as the moored boats turned into the thrust current? Impressive! 😊
She has one bow thruster.
@@janvisser2223 hi Jan, can that thrust to port or starboard sides?
@@philtucker1224 Yes, of course.
@@janvisser2223 👍
If you notice the way the moored boats moved it could have been the result of 'Canal Effect' where large boats in shallow water create a suction effect towards them caused by a pressure difference under their hulls.
clearly the driver was not possessing the same clarity as the name sake of his ship 🤣
The port will have rules and regulations for piloting and will be compulsory to take a pilot over a certain size.. I’m sure they would be needed for this vessel so I recon a pilot would have been onboard despite not showing the pilot flag.
She’s obviously had a problem because she should be going to port to follow the main channel but carries on ahead and into the boats.
the pilot is in the background on another vessel if you look again
@@waynus2021the port will have more than one pilot.. I did notice the other ship manoeuvring towards the quay!
What on earth was the ship's captain thinking? He would have known the use of a pilot is mandatory in this port I wondered why the blue ketch had disappeared, I do hope it wasn't damaged.
The ketch appears to have pretty much kept station, apart from an initial small surge forward which was likely caused by the bow wave off the ship rather than hard contact.
If there had been contact, I expect that it would happen a moment later, in which case we would see the mastheads abruptly dipping as the ketch was forced over, its topsides being the first point of contact and its keel resisting laterally. Then it would roll back and its masts would probably strike the ship. That would have been heartbreaking, but as the ship backs out the ketch seems to emerge intact, nothing damaged aloft. I'll have another look on a bigger display, but that's how it seems on my phone anyway.
I am guessing they suffered a steering malfunction of some kind and since they managed to get her stopped with no damage I am going to say those in the pilot house did a fantastic job of recovering. One must remember these big ships don’t turn or stop on a dime.
If u read the description of video properly u understand the captain got cocky ignoring the pilots advice because of captain arrogant attitude why ship ploughed into moored boats. I'd imagine his licence as captain probably suspended as result of this incident. Its one reasons on many ports there are local pilots to help navigate waters, this takes time & masters of ships needed stop their interference let pilots do their job
Must've been using "Mapquest" for directions.
"Ooops, I think we turned a little early captain..."
🤣🤣
I amazed there was no collision warning sounded. People could have been asleep on that ketch and could have died.
"A collision at sea can ruin your entire day" Farwell's
These ships are normally seen into Teignmouth by the Pilot boat sailing in front and through the main channel. For some reason this ship decided to go it alone and went well off the normal channel - we don't know why he didn't wait for the Pilot like all other large ships. Ships come through here every day with no such issues and come no where neat the small boat which are always safely moored there. A lack of clarity for sure.
More like trying to save money by not using the pilot.
In my country any big ship must reduce speed when they enter our waters (20 mile) and must wait until a local pilot has arrived to guide them into our busy harbors. They usually drop anchor at the 5 mile marker if a pilot is not available, because they are very busy or the harbors is closed due to dangerous swells (30+ feet ).
Is there a weight limit for these rules? I wonder if coastal shipping always operating in the same waters follows the same rules.
I am wondering if the captain said "pilot, we don't need no stinking pilot.. we got gps"
Yes, you haven't done much research before posting your comment. 'Busy harbours'. Yes, the UK has some. Teignmouth is not one of them.
That's not a big ship and it's probably in and out of that port all the time and most likely it is mostly on coastal trade. Accidents happen. It doesn't look too serious to be honest. Just one of those things. Worse things happen at sea 😃
@@jonathanbair523 Lolz!
Don't let social media get ahold of this. They'll claim the ship identifies as a small boat and has every right to be there.
The name of the ship does not suit the captain
The lookouts on the bow were just there to count how many things they hit.
Big Ship to The Boats: "Out of my way, you miserable pack of dinghies!"
I guess he might have had a failure of the bow thruster motor. These are usually powered by a separate motor or motor generator set in the bow. It’s possible it failed to start. Trying to turn a ship with just its rudder in a confined space would be very difficult…and particularly so in this case if the tidal flow was creating a bit of a current.
And even More so when he's going 4 times the speed he should have been going.
It's not how fast you go, it's how long it will take to Stop !
Q: Has this footage been passed to the MAIB?
Looks like a reportable incident to me: '... endangered ... the safety of the ship, its occupants or any other person or the environment.' [MGN 564(M + F) Amendment 1, page 3 para 3, What To Report, definition of a Marine Incident]
(Have passed link to 'someone I know')
I assume the Pilot and others will have reported this. However the MAIB may not be aware of this evidence that may be useful to their investigation.

Probably getting fired from the company, and some license taken of,so he is'nt allowed to sail for a couple of months..
Why?
before knowing what happened ? WOW , simply amazing
Surely the Master lost their ticket for that exceptionally dangerous bit of navigation?
Why?? This looks like a malfunction of any kind. No captain will deliberately steer into a marina. Why the blame culture and taking away the life of a person and his family.
Do they take your licence away when bumping into another car when its slippery without any real damages? Do not expect it. Than why the licence of a captain when a malfunction appears to mate this happening.
Dennis here. Thanks. It's city council's fault! For passing a noise ordinance that prevented the skipper from blowing the ship's whistle to warn all 'em clorox bottles to get out of the way.
Hmm, should have gone to Specsavers 🤣🤣🤣
The other ship slowly moving in on the right might have observed something.
It was probably the other ship that the pilot of the harbour was busy docking when this crazy captain entered.
Clearly, it's a new pilot going for his piloting license, and the testing officer asked him to do a three-point turn.

When I was a child, 30+ years ago, I was told of a drunk captain that left without a pilot and hit a few boats including the harbour masters beautiful yacht, called something like Azure
The captains guide dog is in big trouble .
That was WAY faster than waiting for the pilot.
Obviously the captain had been drinking
The captain sure did need some 'clarity' ....also needs to go to Specsavers asap!!

I’ve no idea what that clown was thinking, but there is probably a reason… He did well to hit the most expensive yacht in the marina. Swan 65 ketch, I think.
Quarter on the video a real Cornish comment heard, "Whaa's do'in?" 😊
Depending upon the size of the harbor, in the US, the USCG would have been called by the harbormaster.
There is a word for people like this...... But I guess we can all get things wrong. God bless you all down there.
Fat?
Yep, "fired." That's what the captain of Clarity deserves at least, both for trying to take such a large ship into such a restricted area without assistance, and for not sounding the ship's horn when collision was imminent.
I love these Beach cams! Is there one in Deal, Kent that I can tune into by any chance? - can someone local comment to me please?

Threading the needle what a pro 👍
Don't know what that captain drinks but i'm sure it is stronger than milk. How they managed to do that with only a light touch on one boat is amazing , some skills... far more than some car parkers in my neighbourhood 😀
Was thinking that as well! About car parkers that is. One day years ago I saw a woman (who should never have had a license) make a mess out of 3 cars: hers and 2 others. She backed up into a car with her right rear fender, pulled back up and hit another with her left front fender, pulled back and finally got into driving space. After that I got in our car, which thankfully was far away from her. My dad said "Did you see that?". I said, "Yeah. How can somebody do that?". We don't know if she just left or if she left her information with someone or as a message under a wiper.
I work at the docks and the ship refused tug assistance on several occassions when advised

In this politically correct 'WOK' world, dare I mention this is an Irish registered ship and I'm smiling at the thought of possibly a drunken Irishman\person being in command. The ship is back en route to Ireland

The captain was probably down below having breakfast while the mate on watch was texting away - making coffee on the bridge ahead of the pilots arrival while silencing those annoying autopilot alarms.
I know that harbour entrance is tight some years ago there was a large coaster aground (high and dry) on the Shaldon side with a very bemused foriegn crew looking over the side, I hope the captain lost his masters ticket

That entire situation should not even be a reality. Either that ship going through anchored boats or the set up requiring that.
