Like many I have a fear of spiders but I can't help but admire their beauty, especially with this amazing footage!
0:48 Thank you for putting the camera settings here. As a photography student, this is super helpful. Great vid as usual!!!
At ~2:03 you can see the large eye to the right (spider's left) change color a bit. It happens elsewhere in this vid. That's the spider looking around...when it's dark the eye is looking at the camera, when it's lighter/body colored, it's generally looking somewhere else.
Absolutely gorgeous critter.
Wow I love jumping spiders this one is so beautiful 😍
These little things make me **gigglesnort** they're so adorable😊
Beautiful! I'm going to have to keep an eye out for these when I'm out hiking!
Way too cute to be the evil omnidirectional-stinging battletank of the insect world...
I love watching your work. It’s very relaxing. Thanks for sharing.
I love spiders. Smart little guys.
Great video! Would like to say, you really inspired me for macrophotography. Just got my laowa 100mm and it is a game changer. Thank you.
Awesome images as always ! Very cooperative subject, filming jumpers is no easy task !
amazing work Thomas! i really like yours photos....
Regards from Argentina.
Love the fantastic stills, but the video sequence from 1m01s to 1m22s is also quite exceptional, as the spider slowly turns on itself and you get to see all sides without ever losing focus. What a beauty!
Thanks! Yeah, I was pleased with how that played out too!
That's my favorite scene from the video! Like a model responding to the commands of the photographer, beautiful.
I love the bright orange; it’s so pretty on the jumping spider.
Love jumping spiders. They are my spider bros.
Even if you were an unfortunate insect being eaten by this arachnid, your last thought would be, "now that is a handsome spider"
Shahan, thanks for providing the details along with the pictures. What a beautiful spider. 😌
WoW ~~!
Thank you very much.
My daughter and I love your video about spider myths, would you ever consider doing one on eye arrangement and identification? Either way awesome videos thanks!
I am absolutely enamored with these adorable critters! 🕷💌
Yeah I noticed that too when I caught one. It's actually called that. Wow.
Isn't natura a wonderful thing thank you for such lovely videos and wonderful music
I would love to see you take shots of a praying mantis!
A wolf in sheep's clothing?..great shoot..macros are so much fun and your's are the best..thanks 🤙👍
Oh man you've gotta love the phidippus. So aware and deliberate in its behavior, and so pretty!
Nice video, nice music! What bird is that singing background vocals?
Great shots!
Came for the macro, but the beautiful guitar made the video for me.
:)
Oh wow, when I saw the photos I was hoping there'd be video, too! Beautiful work as always
Beautiful spider. Great seeing it so up close.
Thomas, I love these videos so much, and I'm looking for the "pyroclastic flow" one to share with my friends. Is that video still up anywhere? Many thanks, Yerrik/Erica (also a game designer/artist/biologist/friend of Alex Wild's)
Hey Yerrik - glad you like my videos!! Looks like I made that Phidippus mystaceus vid unlisted a few years ago - here it is: ua-cam.com/video/gc2O1cfShzQ/v-deo.html
I think she's nervous, look how she bites her nails.
How do you get such still video using the loawa?
Beautiful video as always Thomas! I think I've asked you before but what video editing software are you using these days?
Thanks Ian! MLVapp to convert the magic lantern files to batches of DNGs and then editing/processing in DaVinci Resolve!
I have a new guest living on my porch and i found your video now i know ihave a jumper! Really pretty spider…. We will see if he sticks around .
So nice :)
Sublime. Thank you.
Superb, I haven’t run across any yet.
I just watched your other Cardinal Jumping spider video. Great images! Very inspiring. I stumbled across what I think is also a Cardinal Jumping spider. However, the one I observed has two short black stripes on his abdomen. I'm trying to figure out what the significance is with the black stripes.
Thanks for sharing the video!
Can anyone tell me why phidippus cardinalis?
I know phidippus is jumper, but is cardinalis meaning red or direction.
Red Jumper or
Directional Jumper?
Remember, north, easy, south, west are called your cardinal directions.
Loving the Laowa!
You know, if they didn't have little fangs on them, I wouldn't be so hesitant to try and pick one up, but I always think they'll put giant holes in my fingers. I know the camera makes them look alot bigger than they really are. haha! Wish I had a camera talent like this. Great job
Love the natural wildflower habitat and nature sounds with the acoustic guitar music. Wildlife photography at a whole new level.
As a photographer who used to mainly capture landscapes and seascapes, it was Thomas Shahan who opened up my fascination for macro photography and helped strengthen my respect for this often misunderstood insects and their value in our ecosystem. Sure my work are not even half as close to his beautiful macro work, but I am thankful as his work made me a better photographer in ways I could not have imagined myself.
I have Jumping Spider envy. Our species in The Netherlands area so bland compared to yours.
Thanks Thomas, now I understand better the articulated "hooks" system. The power of video vs photo!
I just uploaded a video of one of these that I found crawling on the wall of my barn. They are absolutely gorgeous in person aswell.
Found a cardinalis today in Ft Worth, thanks for helping me identify this beautiful beast
Beautiful creature. Thanks for sharing it with us. But I don't think it's mimicking ant tho.
Beautiful creature!
Oh my goodness this what I saw on my car in Hanford, CA!!!
Can you tell us about spiders color beige is it venomous ? I found one tiny moves really fast,
Superb as usual.
Wow, they're not only beautiful, but absolutely adorable 😍
I don't understand how that flash works. What are those "tentacles" and that shield in the front?
Flash produces a very brief pop of light - "freezing" any motion in the photographs. White material is a diffuser to soften and spread the light. And the tentacles are locline arms to position the flash heads.

Thanks!
Amazing videography, and as always amazing stills. Btw, didn't you try to get a higher magnification portraits? just curious because I see many extra high magnification portraits in your gallery.
Thanks! Increasingly more I limit my time/interaction with spiders - don't always go for really high mag stuff if the spider seems intent on getting away. Lost this guy in the grass where I found him and just wished him well.
...and I sometimes just don't feel like swapping lenses for higher mag stuff :/ The 2x of the Laowa 100mm was *just* enough to take a portrait with all his legs in - so I was happy enough with that and just let him go on with his life without any more pestering.
@@terser Very much understandable. I too don't like bothering them much, and this is also a reason why you gain respect. You are a true naturalist by heart, and that adds up to your amazing photography skills.
Very very cool
Really good!
stunning
nice
Great video clips, Thomas! I'm trying to get better at filming insects at a macro level, but a lot of the discussion about insect photography is focused (heh) on still photos instead. Your video clips are wonderful - very steady and a surprising amount of the shot is in focus despite the narrow DOFs. How do you do it? Do you change your setup or technique at all when filming VS photographing?
Looks just like the Apache jumping spider I photographed at work this summer :)
Yeah, I was hesitant to ID this one as there are a few phids that look similar. Helpful discussion here: www.inaturalist.org/observations/59382519
Just 2.46 minutes but still able to calm down my nerves after a really exhausting day.... Thx Thomas for your awesome work!
How could you trust they are not poisonous.
I really like macro photography and have been using a macro clip on attachment for my phone for quiet a while now which I love. Although it has worked well I'm thinking of switching to a dslr to up my photography game and take even better photos. I have never used a dslr before let alone a digital camera, but I was wondering what camera and lenses you could recommend as I can't afford to spend much money. I want something with very high magnification 2x-5x or more as I really love high magnification macro photos. If possible I would want a lens and camera that would also work well for wildlife photography, like when photographing birds that are all the way at the other end of a pond for example. Like I said I also can't afford to spend much money, do you have any recommendations for me? Thank you.
Maybe look into mft mirrorless cameras? I'm not sure traditional dslrs are the way anymore... too big and prism viewfinders may be on their way out. 2-5x can be tough - look into cheap/lightweight macros and you can always add the raynox dcr-250 to extended kit lenses!
@@terser Okay thanks! I will look into those. Any in particular you would recommend? Are there any cheap macros that you would recommend specifically? Or just any would work? Even though I can't afford to spend much I still want quality, especially high in resolution as I'm an artist and may want to use photos I take as references, at least that is what I'm hoping for. Have you reviewed any cheap macro lenses/the raynox dcr-250 or do you know of anyone who has? Does it produce pictures with high image quality?
Trust me when I say that even 1:1 magnification lenses are a pain to work with, and beyond 1.5, working handheld is borderline impossible for all but the steadiesr hands as even minute shaking is enough to completely shift the entire plane of focus (the closer you are to a subject, the shallower the depth of field is). Look into a view videos on aperture and depth of field before you get into dslrs. If you ever want a sharp affordable macro lens (the lens is more important than the body), look into the tamron 90mm f004 second hand - its a model that got updated a few years ago, but the updated model still has the same optics, just a fancier shell and autofocus and thus the previous model is sold at very low prices, around 250 bucks
I would suggest when you look at cameras to see if you can find on with "In Body Image Stabilization" this was something I was not even aware of at the time when I started looking to purchase a real camera and wish I had known was available, as instead I spent a lot of $$$ on my Canon RP and Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L USM Macro lens which cost almost as much as the camera itself alone ...........
That said the canon 100mm 2.8 L macro lens has image stabilization and I love it, it has helped a ton for my good photo rate versus when I was using my Tamron 60mm macro lens that did NOT have image stabilization.
Wish I had been able to get a camera with In Body Image stabilization though as if your camera has it then you do not need to spend the extra on lenses with it
@@terser What lens did you use to shoot the video with on the Canon EOS M ??? Video looks great with the focus here
"fire fire where where here here"
Indigo bunting call? So bad with birds...
@@terser yup was hearing indigo bunting and northern cardinals in the background :)
Plot twist: It’s an ant pretending to be a spider
He was posing so nicely for these great shots
