  • The Tiger Spider, Trichonephila plumipes, is one of Australia’s most spectacular spiders. The females are ten times larger than the males, and the males must be both brave and cunning to mate with them without becoming their next meal. The female's web is surrounded by a network of strong, golden silk threads that deter larger creatures and protect her intricate web.
Join Kathryn Kermode in her Wild Backyard as she ventures into the lair of the Tiger Spider.

It is amazing that the web is liquid inside her and when it is released it solidifies. You must have a good camera. The images are great. Love the editing and commentary also

      Thank you Dave!
It’s also amazing that they can produce different types and colours of silk. Only the outer network of threads are gold, theses are visible to bees, her inner orb web is woven from white silk that is invisible to bees.
It’s all shot using my phone and a little $40 macro attachment. ❤️🎥

Another great video Kathryn. How big is the spider in this video? She's beautiful. Thanks for posting.

      Thank you ☺️.
The bodies of these spiders grow to about 35mm, this one is only about half that size, about 20mm. Add on her legs and she’s still a good sized spider.

@@KathrynKermode I just realised where you were. I spoke to Simon the photographer and he knows you. I live in the Clarence Valley also. Lovely part of the planet. Insects are one of my favourite things to watch and wonder about.

I like the St Andrew’s cross spider, their colours are so vivid and the X they make is such a statement.

@@Soffity I love them too. I’ll have to create a video about them.
