Welcome to another Motor News video, I'm Thomas as always, and today I'll show you the 15 best motorcycles for older riders. I don't want to sound rude and offend anyone, so I'll add a little explanation in the preface. For riders over 50, stability and moderate acceleration are much more important and of course safety. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that people of that age can't ride a superbike, and John McGuinness is a good example of that, but there is one thing. We have a professional of the highest caliber before McGuinness and we have to take that into account. Experienced riders will hardly need my advice, I know, but this video is more for those who decide to buy a motorcycle and after some time, when they master the art of riding a bike, I recommend these models. Personally, I am a middle-aged man and I would stop at these models. Rejoice friends.
See the prices and technical characteristics of these motorcycles in the video

At the age of 86 I ride a Yamaha MT-03 which is cheap to buy, cheap to run, light, fast, frugal, and handles superb through the twisties. I'm done with the heavy expensive bikes, my little Yam is the best thing since sliced bread👍

I’m glad you included some smaller and lighter bikes in this video. Most of us as we get older, we don’t have the strength or balance as when we were younger. I found out that I can’t handle bikes much of 500. I finally go a maxi scooter, a Suzuki Burgman 400. It can hand interstate speeds, has tons of storage, no shifting and only weighs around 435 pounds wet.
I read some of the comments BOF riders older than by a decade or more. I’m 66 but have health problems. There are lots of options now days for all types of riders. It’s about the freedom of getting out there to ride and adjust what you ride as needed.

68 this month...... Triumph Thruxton, Triumph Scrambler, Suzuki DL1000, And Royal Enfield 500 Classic in the barn 10k on the road last year. Not bragging, just realized tryin to turn a 900 lb. Lump around in a gravel parking lot might not be the best plan for an old man.
Not riding was NEVER an option.

I am 82, and ride a 99 Harley Softail Custom. It is the most comfortable bike for me. The pillow soft stock seat is comfy with the forward controls and pull back buckhorn bars. I have a bad back but can ride this bike for an hour or so without pain. I love the simplicity of the EVO motor, and easy maintenance.

Jim: When I was in Florida I bought a Fat Boy for my 75th birthday. I bought it sight unseen from a dealer here in NH. It's my 3rd Harley over 55 years of riding. Lots of bikes in between. I have 5 herniated discs and the pain that comes with those. I will pull back on the throttle to get away from the "texting herd." As you know, people are doing everything but driving these days. On Thursday, I was trying to merge in traffic after the Hooksett tolls southbound. I came up from the tunnel ramp. An old woman who was speeding in the left lane decided she wanted to get off 93 to take the loop around Manchester. She didn't look. She didn't signal. She just pulled across in front of me. It was a near miss, and I understand road rage. It would have been nice to see her being pulled over. But I just try to count and thank Mother Mary for letting me be safe.

I hear ya. Fortunately I live in a fairly low populated area in the middle of Kansa. But I still have to look out for the idiots that do not know how to drive or have any compassion at all for us. There are a lot of motorcycles in the area, so most people are mindful of us, and will wait till we get by before they pull out. I do ride in town some, but the town is only about 7500 population. I ride the back roads around here much of the time.
I started riding on a friends Whizzer Motor Bike when I was 8 years old. Bought my first Harley, a 1942 "45" flat head when I was 14. Been a lot of different bikes since then. Rode and 84 Iron head Sportster for 23 years. I have three herniated disc. Every time we have a close call we learn something. Not had to many, but one is enough.

Me too, it is easy to ride slow enjoying cruising along but also offers brisk acceleration when required. I hope to be still riding this for many years to come. Mind you I did install the footboards to ease the arthritis in my knees.

At 78, I’ve been riding for 60 yrs. I’ve got a Honda 2015 Goldwing 40th Anniversary edition that just turned 80,000 miles. It’s balanced, quick with a great lean angle for the twisties here in Arkansas.

I am on a Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe. I love it. Added some risers to the bars and a nice Corbin. Can ride hundreds of miles. Had a young guy ask me today what it bike it was. He sad it was SICK and looked like a wheelie monster. I have had more compliments on this bike than my Haleys. It is also light enough to easily move around but heavy enough to feel stable at speed.

67, Recently started riding again. Have a VTX 1300, because I've always been partial to cruisers. Never thought about trying off road, but recently I've been thinking about adventure bikes. So I think my next purchase will be a small duel sport, to get used to it. Then a midsized adventure. Before I I move up to an African twin or a Pan American.
As you can tell I'm not as reckless as I was before I stopped riding decades ago.

I'm 64, and took up riding again last November. Bike of choice, for me, here in Southern California for a retired rider not looking to tour on a bike? Used 2018 Sport Glide. Had all the goodies I wanted already on it. Set back risers, mustache bars, cruise control factory, Saddlemen seat that's comfortable, Gustafsson windscreen, Harley Davidson Topbox. About $3000 in upgrades. Most important to me, a stock 107 motor and stock exhaust. More HP and torque than I know what to do with.

What applies to older drivers also applies to younger ones: OEM seating position and suspension tuning are only average measurements. Only a lot of younger people are more likely to fall for marketing and think it's cool to sit on a motorcycle like a frog.
Ergonomic adjustment is more or less always necessary.
If you're stupid enough to buy a race bike for road use that you can't properly customize, you're in trouble no matter what your age.

A couple of newish bikes but really not much change since 2014!. The R18 is new but the rest are basically are modified versions of what has been available for a long time. I am not sure what an older rider is. There is such a vast range in experience capability and potential use.
Some nice motorcycles. I still love my Springfield. Its stupid heavy but I can still chuck it around the curves when I want or ride big distances in any conditions. That R18 is good value at 14k

My 88 year old buddy has a KTM 690 Duke and a Yamaha 900 (850) triple. Both are the lightest motorcycles he could find making reasonable power and good suspension
He is tall so saddles and bars needed changes. Miles keep adding up.
Ready for another experience but light does not see a priority.
Sunday rides on back roads some highway of 200 miles or more. Some tours.
Selections here are weird. All heavy meant for sustained slow.

    • @Jonathan-L
      @Jonathan-L Рік тому

Obsolescence catches up with a lot of brands & models, some moreso than others. Once in a while a great bike comes to the market, stays a few years, then it's gone (no chance of long term spare parts for those). But thinking long term dealer support, mechanical expertise, parts & accessories availability ... there's no perfect answer for everyone. It also depends on what part of the world you're in. For example, I live in a city of 2 million people, but there is only 1 experienced mechanic who knows Moto Guzzi like the back of his hand. Eventually when he retires, nobody will fill his shoes. New bikes are getting sophisticated and there's not a lot that owners can do other than oil changes, chain tensioning (if your bike has one) and cleaning. Mechanical skills aren't being acquired by the next generation. Older guys like myself are happy to pay an expert mechanic (who can be hard to find) but also prefer less maintenance to begin with. I hope Indian are in the market for the long term, but it's a 'sink or swim' situation (same goes for a lot of other brands).

When I was 18, people who were 30 years old with 2 children that I knew were old. Old in their attitude. Me at 70, Kawasaki Z1300 1983, nearly back on the road again, 40 year old bikes do have issues. A new Aprillia Tuono V4 would be nice with dropped foot pegs and handlebar risers or maybe the new Ducati Diavel V4. Why do people want to categorize older people with their narrow mind set? Maybe they have never ridden anything decent.

Older rider? Try adventure bikes for a more relaxed riding position that won't give you backache. It's a shame the Tracer 9GT is so scrunched up. Yamaha don't seem to know what they're trying to build. My Yamahas were my most reliable bikes, but I have a 1290SAS at the moment which has a good riding position for me (now 75) and so far has been reliable.

Ever time a walked into a motorcycle shop back then it had crowds of people it seemed and now had to go on a see just one other person and hardly even see them on the streets here. I would like to buy another one but I'm worried I won't be able to sell it with all the EVs coming online or even get parts with all these companies need room to totally retool. Suzuki exited the MotoGP, I mean what does that mean? Ev motorcycles will be boring, no interest in getting one of those.

I’m 62 and have been riding for 47 years, rode multitudes of bikes, all sorts…. Currently riding an MV Agusta 800 Turismo, Veloce Lusso, 800cc triple an excellent middle weight fast sports tourer, comfy and capable.
My last bikes before this were Husqvarna 401 vitpilen, what a laugh, light but not fast enough. Kawasaki 650 ninja, nice capable middleweight, found lacking when I took her to the IOM so sold her. Honda VFR1200F, modified, fast, heavy, to heavy.
As I’ve got older comfort, and manoeuvring the bike in car parks are now a thing but I still like to ride fast and I need a machine that can handle the twisty bits……..MV Agusta 800 triple delivers, I can vouch for that on my last visit to IOM in September last year she delivered the goods.
The ideal bike for older riders…..well it depends what you want to do…..I want ride fast and grow old disgracefully but comfortably …………😎😎😎😎👍👍👍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲

I am 73 and I own and Ride a Superbike. The fastest production bike from 1994-1999 when the Blackbird edged it out. i do not particularly care about wheelchair bike's or "for older people". That's just anal retentive.

Lol no thanks, i'll pass on the bobbers and 60's and 70's retro shit and keep my Busa. I'm 54 and i already lived through that junk. Indian has a cool looking leather bagger but the engine looks hidious.

Dunno, I think that first Triumph looks pretty slick. Wish they could have refrained from putting the word "bobber" on that side cover.

I disagree with the Indian Springfield. I’m almost 60 and just sold mine. The 16” front tire, the angle of the bars, and the rake all make it harder to handle at slow speeds. I moved up to a Chieftain and find it much easier to handle.

I am 59 been riding bikes all my life. started on a Kawasaki GPZ750 and have riden everything from GSXR1000s to Harley Fat Bobs and currently ride a Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS so I have to say that I do not think all "older guys" only want to ride harleys or indians or other laid back cruiser bikes. many of us are out here on liter sport bikes and hyper naked bikes spanking younger riders in the twisties.

que pena estas motos, cada ves mas feas, venderan pocas unidades a unos cuantos empresarios agrios que la van a tener guardada solo por ostentar, y las que lleguen a verdaderos motociclistas las van a modificar!! solo asi se veran mas atractivas!!
