  • Finally back with an update. Didn't feel that I could get one out to you all without getting this high idle issue resolved, yet here we are.
    This episode we get rid of the ICV delete on my 1984 BMW 318i with the M10 engine. I get the throttle body back to factory spec, and reinstall the Idle Control Valve.
    We then tested out a new/used Idle Control Valve, and we shotgunned in a new/used Idle Control Module.
    The car is driving great, but this high idle is preventing me from smogging it here in California :/
    Hard to believe CA still wants me to smog a 40 year old car...
    Anywho, we made some good progress! This is where the road ends for me and this E30.
    More details will follow at the end of the video, but I have my sights set elsewhere at the moment.
    I hope you find this video helpful!

    I just purchased a 1984 BMW 318i with the M10 for $800 about 3 weeks ago. She was in rough condition, I hired a tow truck to come rip her from the ground and haul her to my garage. I have always done my own basic maintenance on my daily drivers but I've never taken on a project car. Do you have a community online anywhere other than your UA-cam channel? Enjoyed your content and those hopeless old wonderful early 3 series, so I tuned into your channel. Will have to return when I develop the natural interest in newer vehicles - hopefully your project is also a bmw - there is an interested viewership that will suffer though delays and challenges, it's a vicarious thrill and an education. The challenge of a motorsport is the working through the impossible. This is a great challenge. Some have to see the perfect future - passing emissions. There is also a giant body of knowledge on the internet and on beemer forums. Many will show photos, direct you to information, or having faced the issue successfully are more than will to share there triumphs to the same issue you are facing.
    I apologize but this video of yours, as you worked through the issues at 9:50 minutes, your tone of voice carried a certain resignation - you were no longer envisioning yourself cruising it your amazing cool amazing deal fun BMW. So it won't pass smog for an emissions issue, the question is, has any 984 BMW 318i passed smog in this current time? I will watch again listening for fix details. Did you change O2 sensor (check for resistivity of sensor from the wiring), pressure control valve (positive vacuum in the crankcase). Did you use a small metal tube attached to a garden hose to listen for vacuum leaks, or use those smoke (mineral oil vapors) device - maybe at auto parts stores - to look for vacuum leaks. Coolant sensors? Enjoy your 318i challenge.

      I will no doubt remain a primarily BMW channel, and future projects will mostly be BMW.
      Ive also done a lot of digging on the forums but havent found the solution yet.
      I agree, i was quite beaten down by this one, and I have lost the vision of cruising around in this car, but if I can find a resolution for it maybe ill get it back.
      havent changed the 02 sensor yet but i have one on the way, as well as a AFM to test.
      Ive checked for vacuum leaks and have smoke tested the engine and intake.

    My E36 does this sometimes. Sometimes it will start at 2K RPM like there's a vacuum leak. Usually though it's good. I deleted that whole vacuum pump / muffler flap system and there are no leaks. Old BMW and Mercedes vehicles have 2 coolant temp sensors. One is for the temp gauge. The other is for the fuel injection idle control valve. The idle control module gets its signal from the other temp sensor to control the voltage to the idle control valve. A quick test is to start the car cold. Let it idle. Pull off electrical connector to ICV and see if idle increases. Measure voltage at the connector with car cold and idling , then measure it with engine warm. It should be a different Voltage. Find that other temp sensor and check with ohmmeter cold and then at operating temp. Specs should be online.

    Alright man. So I have really tried to tackle my 84 318i w/ the m10b18 same as yours ever since finding your channel.
    A little update. I’ve - deleted ICV. Deleted cold start injector. Replaced injectors. Fuel filter. Did full leak down (found VCG leak, vacuum canister leak, ICV delete leaking). Fixed ALL leaks - that has been major. New Bosch plus, wires, cap + rotor. Did timing adjustment. 4-1 headers repairing exhaust leaks and deleting ancient cat. Valve adjustment to factory specs (.006-.008). New radiator. Thermostat. Alternator.
    Man, I’m in the SAME boat as you. It runs WAY better. ICV and cold start injector is useless.
    Mine is idling around 1300rpms and is solid for 2 minutes or so until it develops a small misfire that progressively gets worse.
    I believe your idle going up then down randomly is because it’s detecting a misfire and correcting by raising idle.
    I can get my idle much lower by adjusting the throttle adjustment screw but then it will eventually misfire.
    At this point I don’t know what else I can do. Temp sensors (there’s two sensors next to the diagnosis connector)? Intake box/MAF thingy?

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  6 місяців тому +1

      david I feel your pain!
      This m10 can be real headache. It sounds like youve really covered the bases. Have you played around with the throttle position sensor yet? it needs to be calibrated to the throttle body position if youve messed with the throttle stop screw.
      As far as where to go from here, Im waiting on a replacement Air Flow Meter from my awesome viewer/friend @robsweekendgarage. He has some parts hes sending over that I can test with.

    • @9595david
      @9595david 6 місяців тому

      @@DayOffDIY I have not messed with the throttle position sensor at all. I saw it was marked with yellow paint and figured I probably shouldn’t touch it! Lol. But I can give it a try. How exactly would I calibrate it? I saw in your video you did. But I was confused what pins you were taking readings from as well as “how” exactly. Also looks like a difficult space to test it and make adjustments in such a confined area. Just all around not super comfortable with a multimeter. But I understand it’s an important aspect to fixing/diag on vehicles.
      Yesterday/today I actually seafoamed the engine (not knowing how long the vacuum leaks were there, figured maybe intake valves are gummed up), cleaned the plugs, bore scoped the cylinders, re- gaped the plugs to .030 and REALLY dialed in my ignition timing. Runs smoother for sure. But still misfires at idle if it sits for more than 60 seconds and has massive loss of power above 4500-5000rpms…

    Alec I'm going to give my opinion on the e30, I think it's the catalytic converters on the car. Anyway on with the next project I personally am excited to see! I personally want to see your views sky high! You've already proved your capabilities on that subject. I am so excited for the future of your channel!!

      I ought to take a look at the cat with a boroscope. very well could be the issue. its aftermarket, and its potentially old or clogged.
      Thanks for all the kind words as always, cant wait to share the next project with you! shoot me an email when you get a chance!
