  • What is the best affordable tube combo around 500 bucks? There are plenty of options, but I didn't find any comparisons between the Marshall Origin 50C and the Vox AC15C1. Both of them are popular and rated highly as pedal platforms, and I thought one of them could be a good and affordable combo to do bar gigs and semi-acoustic shows with. But which one would be better? Let's find out!
    This comparison was not sponsored, but initiated by myself. I bought both amps with a return policy, and I might keep the one I like best. The answer to that comes in next week's video.
    If you like to try any of the gear I use in this video for yourself, this is what I've used and where I bought it:

    Thanks for this video, since I want to upgrade my rig (currently using vox pathfinder 15r) and AC15C1 clearly my choice based on this video. It has more clear sounding both clean and overdriven, and seems take pedal really well

      I'm happy to hear this video was helpful to you. I also did a full on review of the AC15, as this was my pick out of these two as well. You really can't go wrong with that amp!

      @@matimoksa thanks for watching and subscribing! I'm sure you'll be happy with the Vox. I played many combos in this price range and I'm amazed by how good this one is.

    They each had a different character with the Vox seeming brighter. The Marshall seemed better with the Tele and Les Paul Junior. The Vox won on the fuzz as the Marshall seemed a little flubby as you pushed it with the fuzz. For me the Marshall including a pedal or the Vox having reverb and tremolo don’t matter (I use a Soundsource True Spring). In the end it comes down probably to the speaker delivering the sound. The Marshall V-type is not near my fave while the Vox has one of my faves, a Greenback (correct?). You can always easily change the speaker after you get it. If they both used the same speaker this would be an even better comparison for you (and me). Nice compare overall. Cheers. Ps. I like Marshall (which I have), Vox, and Orange (which I just sold) and just got a good deal on a Laney L5T-112 which will be delivered this week. Woo hoo!

      The Marshall doesn't have the V-type. I actually don't mind that speaker, would've prefered it. This one has a Celestion Midnight in it. The Vox was brighter, but to me didn't sound sharp or shrill. Usually I play Marshall plexis and the Vox felt and sounded more similar, though the Greenback plays into that as well. And a wether a footswitch, tremelo and reverb matter is indeed subjective. Is does safe pedal board space ofcourse, but the footswitch to turn it on and off takes up enough room for two pedals anyway.
      Thanks for watching and commenting, enjoy your new Laney and let me know how you like it! :)

    Hi Steven, as you already have an Mashall... The Vox makes more sence to add to your collection. I own a Marshall silver jubilee ,Marshall SV20 and Bogner Goldfinger 45. I also plan to sell my Silver jubilee and buy an Vox ac15 instead.

      Well, as I shoot my videos a few weeks in advance, the choice has already been made. So who knows, I cannot spill the beans until next week 😉
      That being said, I think you can't go wrong with the Vox AC15 you're planning to get. Let me know how you like it once you've got it, I'm curious about your experience as well. By the way, those are some nice amps you already own!

    I prefer the Marshall, but I do enjoy Marshall tones more so than the Vox tones; both are British goodness though. Did my own test with these two, they’re both solid but have different quirks.

      The head version of the Origin 50 is actually what made me become a Marshall player and I always thought Vox wasn't for me. Since I've switched to plexi Marshalls the Origin feels a bit stiff to me, but they are good amps. And I found out that Voxes are great, and with a Greenback they feel similar to a plexi to me.

    Definitely the Vox, it had more character cut through the mix better. The Marshall seemed a little muddy, but it’s just an opinion.

    I think if anyone prefers the Marshall it’s out of bias for the big M. Now if we were comparing the dsl with a proper 12 inch celestion speaker then its okay but these origins are junk for what you pay. The vox is the winner and that’s because it comes loaded with a green back and that’s abt it. The Marshall comes with a celestion but a parts bin speaker and a cheaper part overall. But if i don’t have to swap the vox speaker while i do the Marshall it’s a no brainer. The only reason to swap the vox speaker at that point is to put an alnico speaker in it but that’s unnecessary. The Marshall needs a whole baffle and a 12 inch speaker upgrade immediately. But if you’re mad and want to pay more to get the Marshall in a better place than the vox a v30 or alnico speaker would be an amazing swap.

      Before this video I had already owned the Origin 50 head, which I had used with a 2x12" Greenback loaded cabinet, and some characteristics are just the amp, although the speaker for sure isn't helping. Although the Origin has it's flaws and although I think the Vox is cooler (and better) anyway, it was a great gateway drug for me. It has just about enough of that old school Marshall flavour and is a good pedal platform. It replaced my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe at the time and was a gateway drug to Marshall plexis for me. But in this comparison, the Vox all day long. I think these are great.

      @@StevenAnthonyGuitar man for what vox amps cost they’re pretty incredible. They come with great circuitry and top notch speakers. Amps made in the uk or in the usa can’t compete with that. But the dsl is a similar offering from Marshall with good circuitry and a good speaker. I think blackstar also offers some great stuff. But if you’re a head and cab user try an electro harmonix mig 50. Its like a bassman meets plexi definitely one of my favourites

    I have the origin 50 head but I’m not really convinced when mixing on a song. I might go for the vox ac15 head. I’m also afraid I wasn’t good enough to get a good tone. It sounds awesome when I play in front of my cab upgraded with greenbacks. When when I record it it sounds like shit. I’ve tried different mic positions even with a sure57 and a senheiser 906 simultaneously

    • @StevenAnthonyGuitar
      @StevenAnthonyGuitar  Рік тому

      I've used the Origin 50 head to record an album. Sounded good in the room, didn't work so great in the mix. It's a hard amp to get right as far as I remember. What you might try: crank all the EQ knobs full open, gain and tilt half open and push it with an overdrive.

    • @StevenAnthonyGuitar
      @StevenAnthonyGuitar  Рік тому

      Oh and if using two mics, make sure they're in phase. You might want to ditch the Sennheiser for a condensor or ribbon mic to get a better sound combined with the SM57.

      That's a song called 'Honky Tonk Queen' by the band Violet's Tale. I'm currently engineering and producing their EP, next to playing lead guitar for them on the recordings and currently also live as a session player. The EP has been delayed a bit due to covid, but it should come out this year.

    Hi Steven how did you have the Marshall dialled in for the edge of break up/cleanish tone?

  • @jacobrousso7587
    @jacobrousso7587 2 роки тому +1

    Funny enough I vastly preferred the single coil/cleaner sound of the Marshall and slightly preferred the overdrive sounds of the Vox. Was the marshal on the wide open 50w setting?

    • @StevenAnthonyGuitar
      @StevenAnthonyGuitar  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, the Marshall was on 50w with the master volume at least at 5. And there are no wrong answers here, in the end taste is subjective :)

    Line 6 Catalyst 100 for the win!
    I have one, and also the Marshall Origin 50C.
    With both I use a Line 6 HX Effects.
    The Origin works great with a treble boost if that's the tone you want, but any mud is gone.
