Rewatching this review as I saw another video that cited Machi Koro as one of the top ten games of the century, I knew I’d seen a review before and while it your more recent videos far outshine this in terms of video quality, the jokes and content is what made me love your videos and content, plus I still miss Paul
Don't know why this popped up in my feed today, but I'm glad it did. We currently play Splendor over Machi Koro because the basic rules are so simple that my 4 year old can play and those with small children will know the value of a game that is fun for the child and fun for the adult.
Machi Koro is BROKEN, There is a certain combination that will just win the game outright. I like the concept but unfortunately finding the combination has ruined it. Luckily Space Base at least so far has fixed the issues and is the same mechanics. EDIT: Playing with the Harbour Expansion changes fixes the game mostly an doesn't actually require the expansion itself for the rulechange
I have been enjoying Machi Koro for quite a while now, bought the two expansions as well, though the second one isn't as good as the first. Funny enough we played the game wrong at the beggining (having 10 random buildings for sale and draw a new one after one is bought, instead of all the building types available in the beginning), but they actually implemented this method after the second expansion. I would definitely recommend this version of play, it takes away the cafe problem for instance in one of the comments below. Also are those chips really in the UK box? They look really bad, the NL version has cardboard coins with actual numbers 1,5,10 on them.
Machi Koro is fun the first time. Then it's just Settlers without placement. It boils down to literally just roll the dice and hope your number gets called. Might as well play Bingo.
I couldn't agree more. It feels like it doesn't matter at all, what kind of buildings I choose. I would even go further, that you would have a probability >>0 to win if you just chose arbitrary buildings along the way.
...I'm a bit late I guess but how does that differ from Catan? Don't get me wrong, I love both games. But in both games you roll a die and hope your number gets rolled. Catan had trading, but Machi Korro gets going faster. Because I feel like Machi Korro makes it easier to get good numbers, and it reduces the first player advantage that happens in Catan when you go last, and your Aunt gets 6s and 8s but you somehow get a twelve, and... what? Two twos??
Machi Koro died a death in my house very quickly. Once you've got a strategy, you just spam it and hope to outroll your opponent. Repeat games are dull!
I just picked up a used copy of Machi koro at a gaming event, am in line for dinner that the event is doing and there is Quintin in line for food here in the USA.
I'll give you a review for Mice & Mystics .... bloody good game if you want to introduce kids to dungeon crawlers and you like anthropomorphic rodents and cats.
Splendor is amazing, probably the most played game at my house (and I probably have 50 games). MK is new to the games list, and fun, but seems easy to spam certain strategies, and we generally don't like games based on luck rather than skill.
I don't HATE either game but I also don't like either of them. Both come down too much to luck of the draw between equally skilled players (rather than clever decisions).
There are definitely strategies to splendor and I win more often by using various strategies. The strategy I implement depends on the game and how the game is going, which keeps it really intresting as I change my approach depending on the game. Splendor gets better once you have played it a few times so you understand how you can get better at it.
I like that they are consolidating their reviews, but I wish they'd put the original air date of the videos so people don't get confused when they say "It's out of print" or "Is coming out the next month". Right now all you have to go on is Quinn's haircut.
I've played Machi Koro a few times, but it never made sense to me to upgrade to buildings above 6. Using 2 dice just decreses your chance to roll something useful.
It might take you longer to accumulate the wealth to build your four landmarks if you invest exclusively in shops triggered by one die. Greater and more rewards await you when you enter Twodiceville but they also carry greater risks. I guess it all depends on your playstyle.
Question about one of the Machi Koro rules: when it says there is an activation order: red, blue, then purple, does that mean you can use all those colors for one roll, just in that order? Or does it mean you activate red the first time you get that number, then in a different turn, if you roll that same number you can then use blue next, ect?
All of your cards activate when you roll the number, but the order is about payout. If you're broke you might not be able to pay out (red), but then you can still earn on the same turn.
When I picked up my copy of Machi Koro it had a Shut up and Sit Down recommends seal on the back of it. You didn’t seem to give it this seal. Are they lying? I picked this up three years after the review although.
Valeria Card Kingdom totally killed Machi Koro IMO. It fixes the stupid flow of the game in Machi Koro where you need to probably eventually transition to 2 dice, but the timing is awkward, and adds time to the game for no reason. Other player turns are more relevant in V:KC too. Haven't played Machi Koro since :p
My experience with Machi Koro. Player 1, buys that attack cafe. Player 2, buys that attack cafe. Player 3, buys that attack cafe. Me, rolls a 3, earns 1 coin and then lose 3 coins next turn Player 1, doesnt matter Player 2, doesn't matter Player 3 buys a second attack cafe. Me, rolls a 3 earning 1 and losing 4. etc etc etc. I couldn't do shit.
must be played with the Harbor expansion which randomizes the available cards out to buy (I was unbeatable in vanilla: mines + forests + furniture factories)
Mark Fuelle If a game needs something in an expansion to be a good game, that element should be in the base game. personally, my experience with the base game makes me unwilling to try an expansion, even if it fixes the problems.
Machi Koro is one of the most disappointing games I've bought in recent years. It's just not fun and there's very, very little strategy. You can almost just roll, spend your money on a random card, and still win against someone really trying hard.
Machi Koro is a nice game but it takes soooo much space on a table I think we can't play it with more then 3 players (because we have an average size table). It's really just now gonna be publish in UK? I bought it in Germany at the beginning of 2016.
Aleksandra Paul Bohr it is an old review. you can check on the description for the published data of the review. they are uploading old reviews for the UA-cam.
Too bad that american game boxes are idiotically huge...wasting resources, and people's storage space....this is one of many examples where a regular 2 deck playing card sized box would suffice...vs a huge box (that is double the size of the one depicted), not to mention a huge ugly plastic insert was in the box....instead of just a sinple small box...I really dont get why on earth does marketing get to have any say in these things...it is very illogical....smaller, more densely packed boxes = BETTER!
Splendor is one of the most boring and mundane games I've ever played. It's "puzzle" is quite easy to solve at the beginning of the game and doesn't get neither easier nor harder by the round. The biggest thing you have to worry about is: "have I hedged my bet againt the stack of the random cards that will enter play after I buy another card?" So when the victory is more dependent on luck than on your strategy, that's just pathetic.
Well if you are in a game of any amount of players, strategies are bound to overlap, and when playing, multiple decisions lead to your desired outcome, but it is up to you to solve 1.What is the most turn effective/fastest way to your win condition 2.What could slow your opponents win condition down while still helping yourself 3.What is the safest play where your opponent cannot set you back. 4.What is a move I can make where I am assured I will have an effective next turn. When me and my friends play the game it turns into a match of who can read the other the best and make the most efficient moves. And we really enjoy it! So if you ever wanna give the game a shot again try and think of it more like that. Hopefully you can find it more enjoyable!
There are definitely strategies to splendor and I win more often by using various strategies. The strategy I implement depends on the game and how the game is going, which keeps it really intresting as I change my approach depending on the game. Splendor gets better once you have played it a few times so you understand how you can get better at it.
There is one element of strategy: when do you start rolling two dice instead of one? You really want to roll two dice, but it starts off weak, so you have to figure out when to push to the two dice cards. It is fun once.
You got my hopes up at the end there. I would LOVE a co-op game where everybody are waitresses.
I wonder what the total amount of time is in a year these guys spend picking up and re-organizing game elements.
"It's impossible to tell what we'll like"
Sums up my experience in life. Can't imagine any other way of living.

Wow I can't believe anybody actually hired that Ian guy. Terrible at his job.

"Crepuscular" as a New Orleans tour guide that is one of my favourite words!

I sold it once a family member blew my mind by finding the broken aspect and politely rampaging with it.
Glad the game expansion addresses the issue.
I've been playing nothing but these two games at my towns board game night they're both great
Holy shit they're reviewing something I've actually played.
Is that an Asuka wall scroll in the background of the Machi Koro review?
EDIT: it is! SU&SD support for the true Best Girl confirmed.
Living the Tsundere life
lol splendor has a great insert that holds the cards upright... and you had so much trouble getting the cards out because they are laying flat :)
Jonol Son My son pointed that out after playing the game over a dozen times.
ERMGERD!
Ha, I never noticed!
Just let people like the games they like. Don't tell them they can't like it because you don't enjoy it.

Yeah I noticed that too, I've got the Aussie version and we've got the nice coins. Must be something from the first print run!
Machi Koro is fun the first time. Then it's just Settlers without placement. It boils down to literally just roll the dice and hope your number gets called. Might as well play Bingo.
Exactly, it's the best part of Settlers without all the tedium of Settlers
I couldn't agree more. It feels like it doesn't matter at all, what kind of buildings I choose. I would even go further, that you would have a probability >>0 to win if you just chose arbitrary buildings along the way.

The "Splendor in a bush" joke was completely telegraphed, and still I laughed. "Son of a ...."
You can buy Space Base now. That's a lovely game with a comparable concept.
Yes, we're big fans of that one!
@@shutupandsitdown Guess who told me about it first
Thanks for showing us Spring, guys. I feel warmer already!
Dave Dogge kids or your girlfriend who thinks rpgs are for meganerds
The King of all Awesomeness yeah also, it's a good intro into RPGs (although it's not really an RPG even though it has the story element).
Splendor sounds like an interesting game, but the theme just seems boring to me. I may try Machi Koro though. Thanks for the reviews.
My teens love machi koro.
Splendor is amazing, probably the most played game at my house (and I probably have 50 games). MK is new to the games list, and fun, but seems easy to spam certain strategies, and we generally don't like games based on luck rather than skill.
Watching the intro, with the Mice and Mystics review recommended on screen at the same time, really threw me off for a second.
I noticed you wore a shut up and sit down tee shirt do you have any for sale?
On their website
I don't HATE either game but I also don't like either of them. Both come down too much to luck of the draw between equally skilled players (rather than clever decisions).
both are interesting in the discovery phase, and then not that interesting.
Unfortunately the discovery phase is one game for machi koro.
There are definitely strategies to splendor and I win more often by using various strategies. "Are you sure you do this for a living, Ian?"
So, how come these older reviews are finding their way here now?
SUSD used to post on Vimeo back then for whatever reason but now they're uploading everything to YT.
Probably to get their catalog all in one place. I mean when was the last time you did a video search on Vimeo?
I like that they are consolidating their reviews, but I wish they'd put the original air date of the videos so people don't get confused when they say "It's out of print" or "Is coming out the next month".
Right now all you have to go on is Quinn's haircut.
Matías Paolini They do have it in the bottom of the description. Still curious as to why at this time and not sooner...
Yeah, having the date below the fold doesn't really cut it.
I've played Machi Koro a few times, but it never made sense to me to upgrade to buildings above 6. Using 2 dice just decreses your chance to roll something useful.

I do think both games are similar, in that they are small engine builders and about the same weight. Thumbs up.
When I picked up my copy of Machi Koro it had a Shut up and Sit Down recommends seal on the back of it. You didn’t seem to give it this seal. Are they lying? I picked this up three years after the review although.
What's the cocktail game referenced at the end? Didn't quite get it if just a joke lol
Will you guys be reviewing the Bright Lights, Big City version of Machi Koro at some point?
you guys based near lewisham then?
The french version of this is minivilles
These guys are single handedly advertising Carpet Corner
Valeria Card Kingdom totally killed Machi Koro IMO. Thanks!
My experience with Machi Koro.
Player 1, buys that attack cafe.
Player 2, buys that attack cafe.
Player 3, buys that attack cafe.
Me, rolls a 3, earns 1 coin and then lose 3 coins
next turn
Player 1, doesnt matter
Player 2, doesn't matter
Player 3 buys a second attack cafe.
Me, rolls a 3 earning 1 and losing 4.
etc etc etc. I couldn't do shit.
Preston Poland Do you know, that you are giving money first and then collect income?
Yes but it put me so far behind the curve so fast that there was no way to catch up.
Preston Poland stop rolling 3s
must be played with the Harbor expansion which randomizes the available cards out to buy (I was unbeatable in vanilla: mines + forests + furniture factories)
If all the other players are piling on the cafes, just go for the other stuff they're letting slip by.
Not a big fan of Machl Koro. I found it very reliant on what dice roll was " hot". Didn't find it very challenging.
I like Splendor. I DON'T like Machi Koro.
I feel the same way.
Try Valeria: Card Kingdoms. It's Machi Koro only better and easier.
splendor was good for about 10 matches.
machi koro was good for 1 match.
The harbor expansion fixes the dominant strategy problem Machi Koro has.
Mark Fuelle

10:38 OMG I so hate that. LMAO. I've ruined cards numerous times because they won't come out.
Funnily enough, you can clearly see that Splendor has an insert to hold the cards upright but they stacked them up in the box for some reason lol
The silence of professional poker players... LOL!!!!
lol great video! Love both those games
Splendor is my favorite game. So much fun.
I miss Paul
Having played 'Spendor' many times, my feeling on Splendor now is 'meh'. It's too simple. Feels like it could use additional mechanics or objectives.
Why not both? :D
Too bad there's no reason to buy Machi Koro now that Space Base exists.
But... I own both!
What am I supposed to do? Its ripping my family apart!
Did I just saw a Neon Genesis evangelion poster on the wall?
Convenience store meta!!!

would like you guys to do a review on all the firefly games and expansion from gale force 9

I have the german version
Splendor is awesome, the expansion is not.
Truth :D
Cool
You guys make me question my sexuality...
Thats how much I love you.
Greetings from Germany.
So, it's Cataan without a board or any real strategy.

Nobody buy machi koro it is broken
Even the harbor makes it broken.
I hate Splendor. It's just as boring as Monoply
👎
Great review of 2 shitty games ☺️
"whimsical dictators", oh my, are you comparing yourself to the new "you-know-who" on the other side of the pond? god no !
No this video is from 2014. Stop seeing nails everywhere.
I like watching a video over 5 years old use thr term "modern boardgame" 🥷. Quinns is still Quinns so some things never change. 🥷
