Yeah some people are surprised when they find out he used to be big into off road and super into Jeeps before he was the editor of motor trend for years and turned more to cars. Every time I see an old jeep rotting in a field I think "If only Fryburger was here, I wonder if that one is anything special."

That would kind of difficult to do, the engine sits way back into the firewall, and protrudes into the interior just like a Ford Econoline van, or a Chevy Van. It isn't very easy to get at the motor on those.

I understand it wouldn't be a regular thing, but hey they could unite with the guys from the 4x4 stuff on MT, MT hasn't really done much with humvees yet and the humvees are cheap, not to mention the patriotic side of it.

my dad's good buddy had a 1969 jeepster commando and had a corvette engine in it, full cage, dana 60s, arbs, Atlas transfercase, 44 baja claws. used to do tough truck challenge way back in the day at our local track. Thing was a beast

My daddy and i had a 69 jeepster comando and id probably cry like a baby if i was to ever own another..such a great 4x4 and there were more memories made in this than any other we ever built.only one that tops that one is the 84 isuzu pup on the 70 Chevy luv frame.

I've built one of these! well mine was a 73, we took 304 out and put a 360 in it.. from the ground up in a barn in the middle of nowhere texas. automatic as well. that was one of the first full vehicles I built with my father. love these haha. great find.

I just bought a 72 commando as well. I've owned all kinds of cars but the commando is far and away, one of the best.

F-ing score, man. I've Owned 2, Jeeps, The newer 1 was a 93, and the less new 1 was a 84. Both rocked, wish i still had them.N my younger days, i drove some old military stuff at work. A 46, and a 47 flathead, factory, army Jeep,....s. Drove them through, fences both wooden and wire, drove them through drive-up liquor stores, drove them through a river with water over the seats...... Looks like u scored an offroad party wagon! Will hold family, and, or friends,

I've got a 72 commando, soft top, 304, sitting in my garage. Because of the limited time the "bull nose" models were made I love the style of the front end. It looks mean and makes a statement.

The CJ front end swap is soooo easy and looks much better than the bull nose
even the grill/radiator support bolt hole in the front cross member is in the right spot

There's a 69 jeepster commando sittin for sale at an old gas station near my house and if I could afford it I would be all over it. He is right the 66-71 body style is so retro cool.

I love the 71-73 Commando. I never knew that the hard top was steel, I always thought it was fiberglass like every other Jeep hard top.

I learned to drive stick on a junker 67 Jeepster we had. It was also the first thing I ever wrenched on.
I love these old jeeps, in fact I just bought a similar 1968 jeepster commando, it's not quite running yet, but is pretty much rust free.. if anyone has questions or wants pictures feel free to ask

The 66-71 Jeepster Commando front ends would direct swap with a Jeep CJ, in fact the only front difference is the hood and a set of dog ears on the grill for the Commando turn signals. The fenders are the same, even have the CJ notch for a snorkel fitting. Factory Danna 44's front and rear (many CJ owners would snag Jeepster Commando frond ends for the 44, uses a standard GM steering box so easy to put power steering in it. The factory automatics are TH400. Jeep lift kits will work to lift them. Can still do the Ford brake conversion as a bolt on upgrade.

my grandpa had an earlier year 68 I think, had the Buick v6. sold it though, he shouldn't have. one of my favorites he had when I was a kid.

The back end reminds me a little of a Gremlin. Better yet, you need to take a square side Suburban and give it a much shorter wheelbase and a Gremlin rear angle chop. It would be awesome.

My dad had an earlier model jeepster commando. It looked more like a willys in the front end and was hand painted Camo. I wanted it to be my first car but parts were difficult to find by "97".
So are you going to swap the CJ front sheetmetal onto this?

I think this model looks pretty cool tbh
I think those '72+ Commandos are pretty cool, even if not as pretty as the older Jeepster Commandos. You don't see as many of them around as you do the older models. I would keep it more or less as it is, just get it running well and drive it. Get some new tires in the same size, maybe a couple more inches of lift for better clearance, build some custom bumpers and rocker protection for it and hit the trails.
