    My gf really isn't into this type of music, but I wanted her to experience At Giza, I knew she's gonna love it. :) So, I rolled one, fired it and started the song. Told her to be still, not to say anything and just listen for 15 minutes...
    She got so into it, like, couldn't belive you can experience music like that. I never felt so cool in my entire life. :D

    This in my opinion is the greatest performance I have seen out of Cisneros and Haikus (at giza in particular). Dopesmoker is legendary and Pike is great, but this is on a whole different wavelength. They both have the upmost respect for each other and their instruments. Honestly I like this more than the studio version, It seems to be slightly slower, Al's bass playing is groovier and A lot more of Chris's energy and style shows. I probably watch / listen to this video way too much but gladly, It doesn't seem like I'm the only one who "gets it"…. there's something special about the way at giza makes you feel when you listen to it enough times… do any drummers out there know what kind of time signature/drum pattern/technique etc chris plays?

    • @garycheshire900

      My technical percussion knowledge is sketchy. Therefore, I call it "mashing dat ride"

    • @bigapeproductions
      @bigapeproductions 8 років тому +22

      I think Dave Collins from Weedeater summed up doom songwriting pretty well when he said, to paraphrase, that it seems easy to play but it was really hard to write. Chris isn't doing anything weird as far as time goes for the most part. Those sixteenth-note patterns with the kick are just little divisions of what he's doing on the ride, not different time signatures. What is on display is a ton of really good decisions made when writing the songs, very specific techniques, sheer stamina, and that energy and connection you mention. Totally willing to be corrected by someone nerdier about drums, but I think in general it comes down to hard work and an open mind, rather than jazzy wizardry. Whatever the case, it's awesome!

    Badass, tons of respect for these guys...you'd have a tough time finding another 2 piece band who sounds as big and heavy as these dudes, shit these 2 were heavier than a lot of "typical" size bands of like 4-5 haha. Random thought after I've watched this set a number of times; I wonder how many people there watching were trippin balls on some type of psychedelics lmao. Also wonder if Al or Chris were trippin on anything, were just REALLY baked, or were actually sober and just really zoning out into like a trance/meditation sorta thing with the music hahaha. Love music that can just totally overtake your mind like this though and take you into another world even if you aren't on anything mind-altering..best way to relax and forget all the bullshit life can throw at you. I totally respect Chris's decision to move on to a different phase of his life and settle down creating a family n shit (that's awesome); but now that Matt Pike and Al have kinda revived Sleep and been back together playing shows for a while now I'd love to see Chris join them even if it's only temporarily haha. That's enough rambling from me though, gonna go smoke some more green and relax to some tunes lol.
