    Thank you very much for your incredibly educational vids. I was wondering what your experience or 'opinion' is on using flexible denture material?

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  5 років тому +7

      In my opinion these materials have limited usefulness. While the flexibility can be a useful property in some cases, the materials in general tend to be more difficult to adjust and polish, stain more easily than rigid resins, abrade more easily and are frequently difficult/impossible to repair. In general, for normal prostheses, rigid polymers still have many superior properties.

    I have one question: how you check the retention of the tray while it has many holes that will break the seal?

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  Рік тому +1

      If you do not place the vent holes in the tray until after you are finished border molding, you will be fine. Placing holes should be the last step before placing adhesive and making the impression.

    Please confirm removing the spacer before doing border molding... I think removing the spacer before boder molding will lead to instability of the tray in patient mouth.

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  5 років тому +5

      The removal of the spacer will not normally make the tray unstable because the spacer should be of uniform thickness. In fact, if the wax is left in place and accidentally melted when warming the compound, it can cause the spacer to become uneven and potentially lead to instability. Normally leaving or removing the spacer is not a problem if good technique is used.

    • @tanujchauhan9179
      @tanujchauhan9179 5 років тому +1

      @@DrLoneyDal thank you for such a quick response.. no disrespect sir but I think I would disagree to that. Even if after keeping the spacer thickness uniform when we remove it...the tissue surface of the tray will be slightly bigger than that of tissue is patient mouth and tray will not seat well. Anyways you are much experienced.. I really respect the effort you are taking in making these educational videos. Thank you again.

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  5 років тому +8

      Removal of the spacer will create extra room in the tray - room for the impression material which will be subsequently placed in it after border molding. As I mentioned in the video - either technique (removal or non-removal) works. Neither is absolutely better than the other - I’ve used both techniques. If you border mold with the spacer in, you may encounter problems removing it without fracturing the compound or find that the compound overextends the peripheries if the tray is seated too firmly during making of the the impression. Choose whichever technique you prefer.

      @@DrLoneyDal tissue spots can also be placed into the tray and the spacer removed so it doesn't touch the tissues during boarder molding.

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  5 років тому +6

      @@vishnuburla4434 Tissue stops, by their very nature, normally make contact with the tissue during border molding and subsequently during the impression. If they contact the tissue during the impression they can distort the soft tissues they are contacting, especially if the tray is misaligned or placed with sufficient pressure. If they do not contact the tissue during the impression, they are pretty much ineffective. While some advocate use of tissue stops, I think it is simpler, with less chance of tissue displacement to use trays without them. A satisfactory impression can be made with or without them if correct technique is used.

    May I ask if we could use heavy body instead of compo stick

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  3 місяці тому

      @@zacharygonn1322 Thanks. Using a heavy-bodied elastomer is an acceptable alternative to compound. You need to realize that if you don’t get the final impression on the first attempt, normally the entire border molding needs to be redone, as it usually bonds to impression material and comes off when you remove the impression from the tray. It can be difficult to insert the tray all at once with the elastomer over the entire circumference of the tray without dislodging it during insertion (use the two mirror technique for insertion - see my video). Also small changes to the border molding are sometimes more difficult to make than with compound. But if done properly, it can provide a significant time saving.

    Is border moulding compulsory?? Can we achieve retention without border moulding or not

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  4 роки тому +4

      Border moulding is not compulsory to achieve retention. Many dentures are made using alginate impressions alone and patients with these dentures can have acceptable retention and stability. Most dental schools still teach border moulding because it permits refinement of the border so that the peripheral seal can be optimized. Areas such as the retrozygomal fossae, hamular notches and extension to the floor of the mouth are often captured poorly or imperfectly. Border molding can improve the extensions and contours if done properly, especially when the anatomy is challenging.

      Whether or not you border mold, the denture border should not end on soft tissue or muscle that exerts strong dislodging forces on the denture.

    Does border molding mean the same as border tracing? Cause both terms be used interchangeably.....and the same materials (such as greenstick) can be used for either procedures???

    • @DrLoneyDal
      @DrLoneyDal  3 роки тому +1

      In North America, the term 'border tracing' is not used in textbooks or found in the Journal of Prosthodontic Dentistry's 'Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms'. In other parts of the globe this term has been used interchangeably with the term 'border molding' and these two terms could be used equivalently in your region if 'border tracing' is considered acceptable terminology. As such, similar materials could be used.

      @DrLoneyDal  5 років тому +3

      Border molding is used to improve the contours of the periphery of the impression (and subsequently the denture), in an attempt to maximize the peripheral seal. The intent is to improve retention and comfort while minimizing the potential for dislodgement during function.
