Listening to this today was the first time I’ve ever heard Joe Schultz’s voice. I always had had a different voice in my head for him, a more jolly one. I guess he saved the jolly voice for the players. Great stuff - thank you for sharing!
Douglas Lowe Blattner worked with Denny Matthews for the first six seasons with the Royals. Denny Matthews is beginning his 50th season the Royals in 2018.
thank you for sharing this. I've read Ball Four a dozen times over the years and grew up listening to baseball on the radio every night. This takes me back to my childhood.
Diego Segui pitched in relief for the Pilots, in this their first ever game. 8 years later Segui started the first ever game for the Seattle Mariners-but they lost 7-0.
And as I had told someone else, the winning pitcher in the first Mariners' game in 1977 was Frank Tanana of the Angels who pitched left-handed. Nolan Ryan was his teammate!
in that Angels-Mariners 1977 season-opening game, Joe Rudi, batting fifth, hit a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning to account for four of the seven runs. Jerry Remy, Bobby Bonds and Don Baylor were on base ahead of Rudi. Bobby Grich struck out for the first K in the Kingdome.
To clarify, this is Enberg's first ever baseball broadcast. He had been broadcasting Indiana football/basketball UCLA basketball and Rams games prior to landing the Halos gig.
Anyone who has ever read Jim Bouton's classic book "Ball Four" should enjoying listening to the first game of the Seattle Pilots. I heard a lot of familiar names, starting with the pre-game interview with Manager Joe Schultz. I can visualize Jim in the bullpen diligently taking notes for his book while all of this was going on.
I'll have to go back and re-read that part of the book. At any rate, the names of the Pilots bring back memories. I believe the pre-game interview is the first time I've ever head the voice of Manager Joe Schultz (RIP).
My mistake..Buddy Blattner had left in the off season to be the number one guy for the KC Royals. His number 2 guy in his 1st year? Hall of Famer Denny Matthews!
What a historic game! It's hard to imagine that this was Dick Enberg's first game - he even broke out an "Oh my!" It's criminal that the Pilots couldn't hang on.
Of course, Rigney wouldn't last the season, getting the ax later that year for Lefty Phillips after nine seasons as the Halos' only skipper up to that point. He got a measure of vindication in '70 when he won the Western Division as manager of the Minnesota Twins after replacing Billy Martin and his stormy relationship with owner Calvin Griffith..
Hey MR Miley I have a question for you here (or anybody can answer this for me here) Is there any web site that has your WHOLE baseball radio collection? If I remember its something like over 6000 games on radio CBOTR does a great job with the library here in a few years I should be able to listen to every broadcast here. Just wonder if the MILEY COLLECTION is out there someplace besides the Library of Congress
This broadcast tape is a bit slow in speed. I know because I recorded this Angels game on KMPC in 1969 and just listened to both recordings side by side. If the person who put this game on here and gets this message, please make sure it runs on its original speed. Thank you.
Fine announcer, very smart guy, hard worker, even a Doctor, but Dick Enberg had so many 'right place, right time' stories in his documentary, it would make your head spin.
The Pilots were heard on KMPC's sister station, KVI. Gene Autry sought out top sports for his stations, together with strong news, personalities and MOR music. KMPC had the Angels, Rams and UCLA. KVI had UW. KSFO had the Giants, 49ers and Cal.
Jake O'Donnell is most noted for his long career as a NBA referee. He worked double duty for five years from 1968 to 1972. people.com/archive/nobody-loves-jake-odonnell-but-the-hours-and-pay-are-great-vol-3-no-8/
Yes it was, but I think you know that they became the Milwaukee Brewers the next year--Bud Selig bought the Pilots for something like $10 million! Of course Seattle since got another team--the Mariners (whose first game in 1977 was against the Angels and lefthander Frank Tanana)!
1:23:40 a full minute of strange "jokes" about a catcher wanting to kill himself. Cringe worthy and strange. To his credit, Enberg didn't bother to respond. How times have changed, suicide jokes would get you fired nowadays at the end of the half inning.
Glad these are being posted in any form for all to enjoy.Especally us younger Broadcasters to hear and learn from.

Steve Barber's shoulder was "a little stiff." That was a running gag in Jim Bouton's "Ball Four."
Dick Enberg's first ever broadcast, with Don Wells and Buddy Blattner.
Actually Enberg replaced Blattner whom left the Angels for the expansion KC Royals.
Douglas Lowe Blattner worked with Denny Matthews for the first six seasons with the Royals. Denny Matthews is beginning his 50th season the Royals in 2018.

i was 10yrs old and won a contest and met Jim Fregosi in the dugout later in the season
For time running into this channel & damn, I love it. So thanks very much for these uploads, Sir. Happy 2017 to you & yours. Go Braves 😉 Cheers !!!
Only 11,930 in attendance for an opening day game. Amazing!
I was there (was 12).
Thanks so much for doing this! Wish O could get the program from this game so I could re-listen and score it:)
RIP Dick Enberg

+Jeff Boice baseball is a funny game

Lots of firsts. Thanks for sharing.

Bouton was in AAA Vancouver when this game was played.
I'll have to go back and re-read that part of the book. At any rate, the names of the Pilots bring back memories. I believe the pre-game interview is the first time I've ever head the voice of Manager Joe Schultz (RIP).
Not true. He was sent down after this.
Terri henricks And let's pound that Budweiser!

wait this was enberg's first game??? hell of a full pilots game to stumble upon
In right field for the Pilots, future Milwaukee Brewers announcer Mike Hegan.
That's a concept! Have the manager announce/broadcast their lineup (optional will be why he chose or comment on players in said lineup)
In the background- the organist was the ultra-talented if slightly goofy Shay Torrant. The public address announcer Judge Phil Petty. 10:20
Yep. Torrent played Turkey in the straw and other cornball hick tunes.
Shay Torrent also was the organist for the Chicago White Sox prior to joining the Angels.
Dick Enbetg's first ever broadcadr, with Don Wells and Buddy Blattner.
I've read that Dave Niehaus was part of the Angels broadcasting team in 1969, but apparently he wasnt part of the opener.
I know. And wouldn't have been interesting hearing him call a Seattle Pilots game?
Yes. Niehaus did part time radio when the game was televised. Back then Angels only TVd 30 road games.
Douglas Lowe On KTLA Channel 5. KTTV Channel 11 only televised road games against the San Francisco Giants.
William T Dunphy I thought KTTV 11 was the Dodgers station, KTLA 5, was the Angels, and KOGO TV 10 did the Padres during that time period
@@williamdunphy352 True. When Padres joined NL in 69 KTTV also televised all Dodger roadies in SD.
Leadoff double for Tommy Harper! Thanks, 'preciate it.

Dick Enberg while I never met him seemed like a good guy
I met him once and saw him at Disneyland My favorite broadcaster.

He might be trying to avoid copyright violations. Many youtubers do this.

“Is Dick Enberg significant?” Someone asked when he passed on.
My favorite sports voice. He and Vin Scully.

Pilots are gone.
The MLB teams that either moved west or were established in the west were STINGY when it came to television.
10:20
Baseball needs more organists again, and not wanna-be DJs.
Dick Enberg broadcast a lot of dreadful baseball ... eventually the Angels drove him to the network (NBC)
