Why Did Every Band Cover "Gloria"?

  • I wondered why everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Patti Smith to Tom Petty to Bill Murray covered Gloria, then I wrote about it.
Also a ways into working on this video I actually found an article that touches on similar things: wknc.org/2021/03/17/why-does-...
I thought I already expanded on the overlapping points enough and brought up other things so it's not like many people were gonna be like "You STOLE this!!!", but figured I should mention it anyways.

In 1966, at 12 years old, I auditioned for a band playing guitar. I played Gloria, I sucked. 😀

what a time to be 12 years old! 1966 is one of the best years in music history, as you well know.

It really feels like the algorithm let me get a sneak peek of a big, successful music youtube channel before anybody had heard of it. Keep it up! This is better than a lot of videos with tens of thousands of views!

Dave Barry said if you drop a guitar at
the top of a flight of stairs, it'll play
    Gloria on the way down.

Very cool..when I was 15 years old I played drums this was the first song we learned the lead guitarist had to show me when to come in.

Nice essay. To have a song that becomes a standard it has to be carried from generation to generation.. Gloria is one of those encore songs along with Twist and shout that any rock band can play when they’ve run out of songs. Gloria is E D A E D A and that’s it… you can shout it to the bass player and keyboard player and tell the drummer “ straight 4/4” .. you start the song oMG guitar and there. You’re on your way.

Think Patti hooked onto the religious undertones of the song; clergy-like call & response, hypnotic repetitiveness to the point of frenzy.

Well it was one of the first to take advantage of possiblby the Rock's most quitaessencical progression: the almighty Double Plagal with its kickass non diatonic borrowed bVII chord resolving on the tonic

Funny you should mention Them's drummer sounding like he's banging on buckets---The Kinks drummer sounded like he was banging on trash cans!😂😂

I think I have a answer it is not the only answer I've been listening to this song ever since it was written and played in the first time people relate to this song because it had a fast Happy beat and tempo and everybody can do it even children can play this song and here we are now almost 65 years later and everybody still loves it very few songs Carrie this kind of popularity for this amount of time I can't name another one not as popular as this one the only other song I can think of is Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones and The House of the Rising Sun by Eric Burdon and the Animals you're talking about classic rock and roll

The Rationals (arguably the best band to come out of MI but never really made it) added a spoken skit to it. The thing about Gloria is that you can add your own lyrics...everybody did...Patti wasn't the first. It is a song that can be done a few minutes or an hour and everyone is still singing along in the audience.

Recently saw Van Morrison in Las Vegas.....that and LA is about the ONLY places to go to see him domestically otherwise pack your shit up and head to Ireland. Also...don't expect to hear tons of hits (ever see Dylan?)...but he will do a nice smattering of hits (no, he didn't do Gloria, or Moondance, but he did some OTHER great stuff with a bit of "Baby Please Don't go".. Regardless, it was a fantastic show.
Regarding the song, here are my general comments:
1.As much as I LOVE Them's version...I still prefer "The Shadows of the Knight" version a bit more.
2.As far as the most provocative versions I would say #1 is the Hendrix version with the Door's version being #2. Probably NOT a good idea to listen to the Hendrix version around the kids....just saying.
