I hope you guys enjoyed the video!!! Leave your suggestions of what to check out next! Also: check me out on Twitter at: OGWillsIsland!! Love you guys and I’ll see you in the next one.
Isn’t Kevin amazing? He also has played twice at Carnegie Hall in a piano trio and saxophone. He speaks Mandarin, Chinese and before joining PTX was in pre-med. Thanks for following through to check him out. You have a good channel!
He has said that at 3 years old his parents saw his musical ability and started him on the piano at that age. Then, at about 5 years old he started the cello. The sax came after that. When he went to China he studied with a famous musician who suggested he combine his ability to beatbox with playing the cello and he went on from there. He's said that he intended to become a doctor but that God had a different plan for him in music. He originally refused Scott from PTX when they invited him to come join their group for the Sing-off, but Scott paid half of his plane ticket to come to Cali and the rest is history.
Now you have to react to Kevin's original piece he wrote called "Renegade" - and be further prepared to be blown away!! Thanks for this! Great reaction!
You have now been KO'd by KO. It is similar to a Mitch Slap. He is just a savant. Multiple languages, instruments, and other talents. He was pre-med at Yale when Scott talked him into joining them for The Sing Off. Maybe he will cure cancer and broker world peace when he retires from music.
I didn't see anyone answer the specific question yet beyond that it's an electric cello. He made the "electric guitar" sound by adding distortion to his electric cello. On his way back to the cello, you can see him pause - he was stepping on a distortion pedal. Kevin said it took him about a year of messing around with it to figure out how to get the sound and perfect the method.
Thank you for reacting to this amazing Kevin video. He is incredible. I like everything on his UA-cam channel. Right now one of my favorites is "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" performance video. Another fan favorite is "Sign Of The Times". His original song "Renegade" (which is all music played on his cello) is awesome. The instrument played in this video is his electric cello named Mr. Carter. His normal cello is named Beyonce.
Thanks for your wonderful reaction to this one! Instead of being "Mitch Slapped" you were "KO"ed. He usually plays his regular cello that he named "Beyonce" when he is "Celloboxing" with Pentatonix. Today he introduced you to his electric cello that was named "Mr Carter" by his mother (his mom is so proud and supportive of his music in spite of the fact that he dropped out of medical school after graduating with a degree in pre-med at Yale to stay with Pentatonix!) This was a great reaction to start your 'KO' journey and you will also want to check out how he layers his voice on his cover of "Sign Of The Times" too. His singing is so beautiful it is amazing that he told Pentatonix that he did not know how to sing when he first started with them (Avi was his roommate in the beginning and helped him build his self confidence in his singing skills). You had some great questions about how it all started and happened with Kevin; please check out his old video on 'You Tube' of him as a teenager still in high school playing his saxophone at Carnegie Hall. It is called Kevin Olusola in "From The Top: Live At Carnegie Hall-2005". His performance and interview after the performance will answer a lot of your questions and blow you away!
For more cello by Kevin, check out their collaboration with Lindsey Stirling in 'Radioactive', also 'Shallow', and 'Say Something' - that last one, poor Scott had to stand still because they were t rying to make it look like an old fashioned portrait and Scott sings a lot with his hands. He had a death grip on the two chairs in front of him to keep himself from using his hands lol
I got distracted bc they were on tv tonight at the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting. Kevin says he remembers being 3 in the back seat of the car and his dad screaming Kevin will you please stop making noise for 5 minutes!!!. He started really young. He has also played the sax at Carnegie Hall when he was 17 years old. I sent you a dm on Twitter.
Oh hey Will PTX actually Has a new digital class running 12wks I believe starting any day now! You can learn ALL that they've done! Correction found the video again where they announced it was back in September and on the description it says it lasts 30days and only happens a few times a year. Suspect can find link on their official site

Just watch his face as he plays the cello, head back, eyes closed BIG smile....absolutely amazing!!!

PTX are masters of their craft but Kevin is a beast (and a genius!), love that smile at the end. Great reaction, sir!

Would have loved to seen Eddie Van Halen (RIP) react to this. Would love to see Kevin play a duet with a hard rock guitar player.
KO really is in a class all his own. Oh, btw, Marian Hill did write lyrics for the song.

He is good, but considering the nature of the group I'm not surprised.

You should check out Kevin's Wikipedia bio. He also has a series of autobiographical videos on his UA-cam channel.
