    I was out there that day!! left Cisco/RTP at 1:15pm (couldn't miss my Pilates class!! LOL!), and got home (east Raleigh near Knightdale) at MIDNIGHT! Luckily I had a full tank of gas & "Bible on CD" in my car! it was a total gridlock in Triangle Town Center area & couldn't get through, luckily Target (or Walmart?) - one of those over there - was open & giving out coffee to those who were stranded... what a day to remember!!

    After living in Boone NC (the mountains) for 5 years I can tell you that the absolute worst vehicle you can own for snow is a rear wheel drive pick up, followed closely by a rear wheel drive SUV or sedan. If you're not gonna go for a 4wd or AWD car, go for a heavy set front wheel drive sedan. I have an '03 Malibu with a heavy V6 over the wheels and have never had any major issues, I made it up into the most rural area of the county to pick up a friend the other day, I was making fresh tracks and could hear the snow scraping my underbody at times.

    I was caught in the storm that day. The state couldn't brine the roads because I believe it was raining beforehand. It was a sudden ice storm in the afternoon. Normally, the elementary schools would close first, then the middle and high schools. Then people would leave work to return home. However, all the schools and work let out at the same time. This put everyone on the road network at once, paralyzing the entire system. NC is a warm weather state so no snow tires. Most people don't keep chains or even snow shovels. Usually, a warm day following a snow storm melts everything. It was sunny that day. I drove on roads that faced south. The sun warmed their surface to make them passable. I made it home in about three hours on what was normally a half hour commute. I saw on the opposite lanes roads that were impassable due to ice. School buses got trapped. Some had to return the children to school where they stayed that night. Some ambulances were not adequately able to reach their emergency patients. Afterwards, Golden Corral served all the school bus drivers a free lunch in appreciation of their services that day.

      Only time you can't salt the roads is if it gets in the single digits or below. Salt can't reduce the freezing point low enough.

    I grew up in Raleigh, people do not know how to drive on ice/snow there at all. The reason its so bad as well is the road comission basically does nothing to help. So the roads get REAL bad, ice sheets galore. They would put sand down when I lived there.

    • @JeffDeWitt
      @JeffDeWitt 5 років тому

      The "road commision" is called the Department of Transportation and in fact they do an excellent job of brining the roads when winter weather is on the way. However, that day the mess started as rain, which would have washed the brine away, then started freezing.

      I'd have to disagree with you on that one, just the other day I drove from my house in Boone to Bethel (near the Tennessee line) during a snowstorm, the roads had not been plowed yet because it came in so fast and I was able to handle it in my heavy FWD Malibu with a few inches of snow on the road. In fact, I had more traction on the windy backroads than I had on the main roads that had already had some work done on them. I was going about 35 at times and had no issues and did not feel any danger what so ever.

      +lfsracer79 Low end all seasons suck.
      The ones I have outperform several sets of snow tires I have tried.
