Why Scorch works as an antagonist - The Bad Batch

- Today I share why I believe Scorch is a fantastic choice to face off with Clone Force 99, not just for the challenge he presents, but for why it makes perfect sense for this member of Delta Squad to be that choice!
Thanks for watching! Let me know what you think of Scorch's new role, as well as this new format for the channel, be it good or bad!

I could definitely see Scorch as being resentful towards the Jedi after losing Sev, since they were close friends in Republic Commando.
You bring up a great point! I hadn't even considered that, and since that's all we have to go off of in regards to Sev, I'd say it's super likely!
Close friends is a severe understatement. Obviously all the clones are brothers just due to having the same DNA. But Scorch and Sev literally grew up together likely rarely being separated. It’s honestly a little hard to fathom how tight their bond would have been.
Except that game is no longer canon, just the squad themselves are only canon.
@@KNIGHT.COMPANY You're absolutely right, but this discussion ignores the boundaries of canon. It just does a dive into our understanding of a character one way, and how it contrasts with another. We're just using our knowledge of Delta as a whole to inform and theorize (especially theorize, since we don't know anything about Delta in canon right now 😅)
@Shocktimus989 I have a feeling scorch is probably going to turn against the empire and assist leading this clone rebellion if he hears Hemlocks plan for the clones.
Another theory, hemlock orders the batch to be tracked down, assigns scorch to the hunt where scorch rallies delta squad... delta vs 99
If boss would be the antagonist, the bad batch would had no chance to win.
😂 You make a great point
He's a lot scarier than Hunter is.
Even with Scorch, it's clear he's as dangerous as half the squad put together. Sev and Boss, individually, could probably take the whole batch alone.
Yeah if it wasn't for the visor clearing his screen would be consistent of oil and bug guts
Seeing Scorch in Imperial service in both EU timelines is super scary.
Incredibly! It's so jarring in general to see clones we're so fond of in service, but Scorch is one of those especially terrifying cases!
You know.... interesting point. I didn't think about his armor being more foreboding than the others. Like how his armor and personality shift really amplify him as a villian . I would however like to see sommme of his old personality show up. Otherwise whats the point? Vader shows hints of Anakin afterall.
I absolutely agree! Hopefully once we get more of Scorch in action, it will show a bit more of his more... explosive side. On the surface, a one-note villain that can easily be swapped out with another can't be all that he is in this situation, there has to be something that makes it worthwhile. 🙌
Couldn't have put it better myself!
It's actually pretty close to how Scorch was in Legends after the loss of Sev. You can see this in Karen Traviss' novel Imperial Commando: 501st, where Scorch has become rather bitter from the loss of his pod brother.
That's awesome! Unfortunately I'm a bit unfamiliar with Traviss' novels aside from brief overviews (I'll get to them eventually!), but it's great to know there are connections there. It makes perfect sense, and not really anything to say otherwise in the canon timeline. Thanks!
@Shocktimus989 Yeah, I'd highly recommend her novels, they give such a great and unique perspective on the clones and Mandalorian culture.
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102 Absolutely, I've heard nothing but great things about them. Looking forward to it!
I remember thinking it was creepy as hell seeing him silently hunting the BB
It really is! Especially in the finale of this season. Silently doing his job is so terrifying!
You know, it’s similar to what happened to Vader, to go from a fun loving soldier to a blank monotone robot under the empire is frightening.
For sure! I think in Scorch's case, it's very intriguing in that we don't see his journey to a blank robot, it just happens suddenly. Great point!
@@Shocktimus989 hope they show it in season 3
@@lucabestea6844 Same here! I'm sure we won't see Scorch in particular, but instead see the process he and the others went through
Scorch showed a lot of emotion and must have gone sour after sevs death.
That's a theory I've seen tossed around a couple of times, and I love it! Just the idea of Scorch shutting himself off after leaving not only a squadmate behind, but his pod brother. It's tragic, and it makes sense!
"If they're anything as good as I hear, they can practically win the war themselves"
-Some regs
I think the Doctor has messed with the psyche of clones - I could see that being why he is basically a blank slate like the clone assassin
I completely agree! It does beg the question of why the commandos don't just wear the same armor set as the Operative (maybe so it doesn't lead back to anyone?), but regardless, there has to be something Hemlock has done that keeps them in line.
i think delta squad as a whole would be perfect foils to the bad batch as villians and it would be so cool
Completely agree! Their skills really complement each other super well, and to have a whole squad be that big threat is incredibly imposing!
The Imperial Trandoshans traded Sev to Mount Tantis
One thing we MUST see in season 3, is the appearance of the entire delta squad and their theme on full blast as they walk in. That would already set the hype to 1000000000000, and blow the sequels away. Plus Delta Squad drip
Republic Commando isn’t canon anymore?! It’s outrageous! It’s unfair!
It’s still real to me, damn it.
Officially, it is sadly not. But if you think about it, there's nothing that dictates the story of Delta Squad never happened. Anything that happened in the game hasn't been retconned yet! And of course, just because it isn't recognized as canon doesn't take away from how amazing it is!
@@Shocktimus989 The Imperial Trandoshans traded Sev to Mount Tantis
RC is one of the rare cases where Legends doesn't contradict canon, so it can easily be taken as canon. There's also the case of the Darth Maul Dark Horse comics which are Legends material but 100% canon to Disney canon because they are really just scrapped Clone Wars episodes planned for Season 7
Hey, I´ve got an idea where the Boss and fixxer are: They might be red guards, they were both the most loyal to the chain of command of their squad, And are probably the most likely to follow armor regulations. That means, either those two are in usual commando armor doing whatever for the imperial research group, or they may be royal guards.
That's a very interesting idea! I can see troopers, especially commandos, who are recognized for their incredible loyalty being rewarded with much higher positions like Royal Guards. If they are still in commando uniform, I wonder if they'd have the same treatment as Cody with the grey colors. Great thought!
Delta squad needs their own show
That would be so cool! I feel like if it was formatted sort of like the Tales of the Jedi series, that would be so sweet
I think it could be awesome if whole Delta Squad would appear in The Bad Batch, for example Boss and Fixer (maybe with Sev if his death isn't canon) on the Rex's side, and Scorch on the Imperial. Then Scorch coming by the rouge clones side by the rest of his old team
I agree, it would be awesome! I've seen rumors swirling around about a potential film or follow-up series focused on Rex's group. If there was a time to include Delta, that could be it!
A very intreasting opinion I liked what you used to back it up! A very well executed video indeed.
Thank you!! I really appreciate it 🙏
Boss, Fixer, Gregor and Sev vs Scorch and Imperial Clone Commando Squad
Oooh, I'd probably have to go with Team 1 on this one! Of course unless maybe some of the Imperial Commandos turn out to be the greatest clone soldiers in the galaxy... hmmm
I want a 1v1 with scorch and fixer
honestly this was all my thoughts when i first saw him. F for Scorch. i still love him and seeing him like this is really sad but also cool. great vid mate!
Thank you! Yeah, it's always heartbreaking to see clones who are still with the Empire (voluntarily or otherwise), yet still fascinating in other ways. But hopefully come season 3 something will change and he'll snap, or outright quit!
@@Shocktimus989 i hope to see it!
The Imperial Trandoshans traded Sev to Mount Tantis
Oooooh, fascinating idea!
Damn bro u make a good point i didn't see it that way until now. Scorch being this cold blooded killer after how he was during the CW just goes to show how BAD the Empires indoctrination is. You should keep making vids like these if you enjoy making them cuz i really enjoy watching them : )
Absolutely. Whether it be from enhancing the inhibitor chip effects like we've seen with Crosshair, or just by being around evil people like Hemlock, Scorch and the other commandos have had some kind of indoctrination. Thanks so much! I really appreciate it, man!
Imo, after losing Sev and how resentful he got after Sev being replaced as if he was just that expendable it would be justifiable. I think, he got so cold that a certain official saw it. As a way to stop commandos from turning on the Empire, as it happened in Legends, he used Skorch to gather the commandos most likely to rebel and lead them into a trap. They were then sent on Tantiss and got what Crosshair got in season 1 but worse. And what good he may have in him got flushed by the guilt he now feels and how there's no turning back for him.
Fantastic idea! I'm very inclined to agree. Especially with what we've seen recently about the Imperial "reeducation", there's also a good chance Scorch was one of the first ones this process was done to. The level of evil stuff going on in Tantiss and he just stone-faces his way through it all? There has to be more to it!
In the Order 66 novel, Scorch changed after he snapped into a rage on Haurgab and then when they left Sev on Kashyyk, so that explains why he's cold. But he's not really taken the role of an actual antagonist he's more or less been a cameo, since Filoni originally had him just a commando designed as Scorch, then changed his mind, the rest of delta probably wont appear because most people prefer delta, omega and the nulls over the bad batch, and bringing delta back will overshadow the bad batch. But filoni will add any cameo he thinks will keep people watching so who knows.
Fascinating stuff about the novel! I'm not entirely sure where it's been said before that Filoni in particular was the one to include a commando just designed as Scorch, or really from anyone else, just as a cameo. Especially since he and the rest of Delta appeared in full for a real cameo. So to have that same design used for a unnamed clone would be super strange...
Also interesting point about most people preferring the other types. Personally, I think it's telling that they make the series for a popular clone group that tons of people wanted to see more of, and I do prefer it that way. I enjoy the Traviss stories and the ideas established, but I think the stories here work super well. It can resonate with all kinds of fans, whereas I feel adapting the other types of clones would make a series more like Andor and for a certain kind of age group/audience, more on the mature side. (Not to say Andor is devalued by that. It's definitely one of my favorite shows ever)
Y'know... looking back on it. This starts making a bit more sense. I mean. Sev seems like he would have made perfect sense as the Doctor's henchman but with his fate left unknown, I think this is also Dave Filoni's way of telling us that Republic Commando might very well still be canon in his eyes.
With that said, I could see Scorch's personality shift a bit after Sev's abandonment. In fact if I recall correctly, in the books, he does become increasingly pessimistic and bitter, especially towards the squad's new replacement.
Also in old legends material, the Clone Commandos were so indoctrinated, due to their training by Jango Fett that they valued honor above all else, which meant betraying the Empire would be seen as the most dishonorable act they, as spiritual Mandalorians, could possibly do.
I wonder if this is Filoni's way of reminding us of some of that old legends material... either way I'd love to see the rest of Delta make an appearance in the final season. If they don't appear there... I don't know where else they would, unless Scorch survives and maaaaybe we get a Republic Commando spinoff? Please Filoni?
All of this! I'd venture a guess and say the team writing the show are leaving his place in the galaxy at this time ambiguous *just in case* there's stories to be told there (massive fingers crossed that happens). Same with the rest of Delta. If none of them appear, there's GOT to be more for them in the future.
Bro imagine if Sev joined the Bad Batch
That would be so sick! I remember when they released the names of all the episodes, I saw "The Solitary Clone" and thought it was a Sev return episode. Hopefully he makes an appearance!
With season 3 starting, there's some more ground to cover with Six-Two. Might make an updated or a part 2 once the season concludes? We shall see.
Such a well put and intresting video, I had to drop a sub!
Thank you!! That means so much! 🙏
Here what I think happen to the rest of Delta Squad, they all died and Scorch became more colder
That's a great theory! It would totally explain his coldness!
When you suffer a loss, you at first try to shut himself from it, but that does not heal you, it only distracts you. He shut himself from what happened with the service to newly created Empire. No more goofy, excitable Scorch, but a hollow shell who only follows orders until only a sweet release of death rescues him. In the end it was not the chip that changed him for worse. He did that to himself, because unlike Bad Batch who mastered their loss of Tech (at least I hope to), he let his own loss (if that's about Sev if canon) master him.
This is a fantastic idea. A very psychological one at that. Very well put!
For a small channel, I really like how you made this video! Kind of have a Reycivic vibe if you know about that channel
Thank you so much! I'm not familiar with the channel, but I still very much appreciate the comparison
Though, from a logical standpoint, Fixer would've been a better fit. Seems way more likely to become a cold, unfeeling asshole because, well, he already is pretty cold.
I very much agree from the pre-Empire knowledge we have of Fixer, and especially from an in-universe perspective. As I bring up here, it SUCH a departure from Scorch's previous headspace to the audience. I'm sure wherever Fixer is, he's causing his own merciless mayhem.
I’m afraid that his appearance will mean next to nothing and they’re just using re using him and it’s basically a new character.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a new character. There's really nothing about Scorch or Delta as a whole, but also nothing that contradicts most of their previous stories in Legends. But in regards to this show, that's totally fine. He's not intended to be a main character or anything like that. It's just cool to think "Oh man, it's Scorch"
Scorch really shows the changing of the guard, and how the Empire robs you of your humanity
Perfectly said! It reminds me of an inverse of Cody. His color was sucked away, but he still had his humanity. Scorch on the other hand retains his colors, but no longer has a key part of his character, or his humanity.
They did my boy so dirty...
To each their own for sure. I'll have a new video soon wrapping up his story and I give my thoughts on his role. I think his presence was really good, but lacked a defining trait. Say if he was the lead operative/assassin guy hunting the Batch.
@@Shocktimus989 Yeah, I am just more upset because I played republic commandos and really enjoyed it, so having him dying like he was nothing, in a a matter of seconds, despite all of his cameos and appearances, just really feels bad.
@@vovlasc9817 Oh yeah, I totally understand that, also being one who played RC. I've seen some screenshots of a lone commando with suspiciously similar markings in a long shot when Tarkin arrives on the ground, so maybe there's still a chance!
He was executed order 66
Shame they didnt keep his voice bit more to the game
Understandable, but it'd be super weird to just hear Raphael Sbarge for one clone when Dee voices them all 😅 If that's what you meant, of course.
I consider everything in past star wars canon until further notice
You're more than free to for your own head canon! I just say it as it is officially, love it or not :)

@@kevinvassago I most certainly do, in the comments section of this video specifically 😆
@@Shocktimus989 yeah, I've noticed when someone posts a star wars video they open themselves up to a boatload of criticism due to conflicting information, differing interpretations, and constantly changing information. Like Ahsoka killing the Inquisitor in Tales of the Jedi. There are some sources that say Dave Filoni ment that to be the same instance as the Ahsoka book for how she got her lightsabers, but EK Johnston says that Dave told her he didn't overwrite her book and it's a separate event. I have a screenshot on my phone from awhile ago of Wookiepedia saying that the planet they're on is Raada, but now it doesn't. There are some valid online sources that state the Inquisitor is the 6th brother, while others state he's still an unnamed Inquisitor. I wouldn't even consider any of this a retcon, just additional information in a developing story. Plus, when you add ppls feelings into the equation, the conversation starts to get emotional. It's all out of love, but ppl tend to act irrationally due to that love. So basically, we're all fugging psycho🤣
@@kevinvassago Basically lol
I’m sorry but this very “click baitey” He’s had no meaningful lines in the show, never was acknowledged, he’s just an Easter egg running around
I appreciate the concern, but I assure you this is just an opinion piece on the character. Nothing is meant to be misleading, just talking about his character in previous media, and how that is different than his portrayal in the show. Yes he is an easter egg, and a cool one at that!
Why is sev not canon anymore? He did appear in the clone wars.
Not that Sev isn't canon, it's whatever his fate is. That mission to Kashyyyk could have never happened at all, therefore he probably never died/went missing
So what ur saying is, hes just there for the shock value? As in clickbait 🗿
Not at all. It's cool because it's breaking established character traits for something unique and out of the box for a character like Scorch. He doesn't need to be there at all. Taking Scorch out, nothing changes. How is any of this clickbait? It's a character analysis.
@@Shocktimus989 so if nothing changes if he is not there doesn't that mean that he's just eye candy? As in clickbait? We technically don't even know his character because rc isn't canon 😔
He's there because he's a clone commando in places riddled with clone commandos. It could be Boss, Sev, Fixer, Scorch, anyone else in Omega. Why bother making a new character when you can bring over one existing who has nothing going on? Especially since he has a role now. It's a neat addition, not clickbait. How is that clickbait at all? RC isn't canon, but the point of this video is an opinion piece on previously established traits/lore and the contrast with what we're presented in the show. It isn't that difficult, at least I don't think so.
Your video and point doesn’t work for a simple reason
republic commando isn’t canon. Any of scorch’s personality could be contradicted by material that becomes canonical.
The only times we do seem in canonically he’s not like he is in game. The only reason it works like you said is cause of familiar, but that familiar is going off the work of better writers
The republic commandos were the original “bad batch” in a sense so the funny guy now being an empire goon feels lazy and disparaging then clever
I respect your take! However I don't look at the points I made as being canon or not. I simply bring up how we as an audience have known Scorch in one way, and how that difference to now is as jarring as it is. Being that there is very little canon material with him as of right now, all we have to go off of is his Legends versions, which works just fine for the same reasons if the novels or game were canon.
I don't really think of it as lazy or incompetent either. At the end of the day, it's a bad guy with the colors we recognize. It's not like Scorch is meant to be looked at here as a main character. More toward "Oh man, it's Scorch" and from there we use our knowledge of him to inform the present.
Thanks for bringing this up, I very much understand where you're coming from and appreciate talking about it!
@@Shocktimus989 the reason I can’t understand your point is because legends and canon are different and Disney from writers to defenders have stated not to use legends as a metric for understanding Star Wars or reintroduced characters. As such the idea of sorch being different isn’t unique to me logically because that’s happened to so much (mandalore and mandalorian culute, darth bane, the timeline etc
It’s the same issue with seeing Bane in TCW, most fans know who he is in legends, he’s a radically different character and the only reason why it’s a big deal is the context of the viewer having consumer better material
The reason it’s more damming is because Disney discarding legends to tell more stories banks on what your citing to have “effective revelations and antagonists” this is further confounded by the fact that Disney doesn’t really have good continuity (the events of Kanans comic contradict those events in the bad batch in very drastic ways. So Ultimately it could just be a a clone commando with similar colors especially given the fact that outside of looking like sorch he doesn’t sound like him.
@@Zimzilla99 Sure, I totally understand that. I personally don't give much thought to not using various stories as a metric for characters, because Star Wars is whatever we make of it. People can consider canon whatever they like to!
I think your point about Darth Bane makes sense, aside from the fact it wasn't anything under the Disney banner, if that's what your implying. That arc was very much worked on by George, Dave and co. Same goes for Mandalorian topics of the Clone Wars.
Again, I don't put too much stock in picking out contradictions such as the Kanan comics. People can very simply ignore the comics, or ignore Bad Batch, or look at it as a different telling (from a certain point of view if you will), such as Kanan remembering the event differently.
Lastly, I get where you're going at, but I can confidently say it is Scorch. Prior to the confirmation in the credits of Metamorphosis, there's no chance the animators of Lucasfilm (another point to differentiate Disney from Lucasfilm) design a commando to have those exact colors and not be Scorch. The voice being different is a very simple and easy choice. Dee voices all the clones, so bringing in Ralph for the voice would be VERY confusing to the average viewer, and wouldn't make much sense anyway. One interpretation I read was that as a clone, you hear the voices of your brothers far differently than someone else. Boss hears Scorch as Ralph, Sev as Jonathan, etc. But we just hear Dee. It's a neat idea!
@@Shocktimus989 that is fundamentally where we diverge. “Star Wars is whatever we make of it” not really. I mean we can have our fan fictions and ideas. But ultimately if official material directly contradicts our ideas then ultimately our capacity to engage with theorizing, fan discussion, and great thematic connection is hampered.
Ultimately it comes down to ignoring things which considering how tight legends was and canon isn’t and how much canon needs to bank on legends why I don’t really stand behind that point
@@Zimzilla99 I'd say that Legends wasn't as tight as credit can be given. Clone Wars did away with countless introductions through those novels, etc., which both are in the same category of legends. Inversely, I'd say that the canon stories are far more connected (aside from... the Ahsoka novel and... the Kanan comics... those two only come to mind right away), considering they're done in cohesion. Back then, Clone Wars didn't exist, so the Thrawn Trilogy would say it was 50+ years ago when the war happened, and the clones went mad. Same goes for the inhibitor chips. That falls under the legends category, but so does the Traviss concept of free-thinking.
I got to meet Sam Witwer at a con a few years ago, and on his panel someone brought up how one of the Maul books wasn't canon, and he said that whatever stories we believe happened is true. "Official material" or not, the media exists for our enjoyment. Same with the thematic connection. It doesn't, and shouldn't matter if a story is 'canon' or not for the story to mean something to us.
He needs to be way more unbeatable
I totally get that. From the little bits and pieces we've seen, he still carries that force, but nothing like a full on battle outside of the hallway fight on Daro. Hopefully next season will see him shining more!
Lol the show doesn't give us any sort of idea of what kinda character Scorch is besides a frequent cameo. Bad Batch is so terrible with setting up actual villain characters.
I personally disagree. My point with this video doesn't imply Scorch is a main villain, because he isn't. It's the 180 turn he's made from being one kind of character to being another, and how jarring that is for we as the audience.
But in regards to actual villain characters, I think that Crosshair in S1, Rampart across both seasons, and Hemlock in S2 have all been fantastic. Crosshair was the foil to the squad (and a compelling one at that), Rampart was the poster Imperial officer who A) doesn't care about clones and B) is desperate to maintain his position in the food chain. But it's all for naught as he is as expendable as the rest. Hemlock, from the theme, to Jimmi Simpson's nuanced performance, to the gosh dang black glove, and the evil he exudes, I think Hemlock is an outstanding villain.
@@Shocktimus989 Crosshair went through a predictable redemption "arc", Rampart was a literl nobody, and Hemlock only made his debut halfway through season 2 and barely did anything lol. They're all the same Filoni villains we've gotten in the past, walking villainous caricatures with nothing actually interesting about them. It's pathetic, especially compared to Andor's villains.
@@dancingvalkyrie Crosshair's arc occurred in S2, hence why I say S1 specifically. Rampart played a pretty essential role in many of the changes from Republic to Empire. The chain code thing, War-Mantle, the destruction of Kamino, etc. And while yes Hemlock wasn't around for the whole season, he's very much a different character from what we've seen in Star Wars, especially animation. Whether they are interesting or not is entirely up to you. And I'd say it's very unfair to compare two vastly different styles, themes, and intended audiences to the mature, dark and gritty Andor. There really isn't room for comparison. Andor is meant for a specific audience, Bad Batch works for all audiences.
@@Shocktimus989 Crosshair was boring in season 1. The guy had no real motivation for siding with the Empire besides being meanie head. Rampart playing an essential role in the lore does not make him an interesting character. Like Crosshair, the guy has no drive or motivation behind his actions, he's another generic Imperial villain. Andor isn't even the only thing I can bring up, games like Jedi Fallen Order or Squadrons have more interesting Imperial characters. Freakin Disney films made more memorable villains than any of Filoni's recent works lol
@@dancingvalkyrie Again, calling someone boring or generic is completely up to your own devices. And like I said, Andor, JFO or Squadrons cannot be compared to Bad Batch. They are simply meant for different people. Bad Batch is intended for all ages, the others are not. I'd say that it's a no-brainer that the sequel trilogy spawned more memorable villains, because they're movies. And they had unbelievable hype and marketing put behind them.
I mentioned this elsewhere, but it gives me a chuckle when Filoni is placed as public enemy #1. I won't really give that the light of day besides this. It's just silly.

Um... where was the advice? I think my advice is don't go in with preconceived notions that all things made by a certain company is automatically disqualified from being good enough to be canon. ARC troopers betta. I kid, but I understand the criticism. There's a few shining moments of the CCs, namely them coordinating. I think one great example is War Mantle, where they're so blatantly better than TKs, as well as the S2 finale, but I get you.
