The Atlanta Braves' last-ditch comeback vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates needs a deep rewind | 1992 NLCS
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 лют 2019
- Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS was a perfect representation of the ongoing battle between the Pirates and the Braves. It was close, it was tense, and it had tremendously high stakes. For the Braves, it meant the chance to prove they weren't a flash in the pan. For the Pirates, it was a likely last chance to get to the World Series for the team's core. So naturally, it came down to the very last out.

This loss set the Pirates back about 20 years.
More like 27 years...and counting. The Pirates did have their return to relevance when they finally put up a winning record and made the playoffs in 2013, but they still haven't won the division or returned to the NLCS since this moment.
The 2015 NL Wild Card Game set them back another 40 years.
And they knew it, which makes it that much more heartbreaking. Just try to imagine the mood in the Pirates' shower and locker room right after that game. Or not. Better not to.
I always feel like any discussion about baseball teams and their rosters of valuable players needs to be done with a giant, neon flashing asterisk, because there exists such a wide ocean of disparity in talent ball clubs are able to acquire based on how much money they have and want to spend. It's not a fair level playing field and skews the truth about a team's potential to win consistently.
FaceRip Wrong. Royals won the World Series. Pirates could have too if Huntington wasn’t a worthless ass clown piece of crap.
Randy Marsh can’t have a tight strike zone?
I thought this was America.
Glad someone other than me commented about Randy so awesome ha
::takes shirt off::
Youre the best...around...
Nah this is Taggarty
Wasn't saying he "can't" have a tight strike zone, just commenting on the irony and bad luck for the Pirates that at least a couple of those balls in the Berryhill sequence may have been called strikes had McSherry still been behind the plate, so his illness may have contributed to the result.
I was 9 years old watching this game in the living room of our small house in Rome, Georgia with my mom, dad, twin brother and little brother. I will never forget how we all went crazy that night when Bream slid home and the ump threw up that safe sign. Things are much different now. My identical twin brother passed away two years ago, my little brother lives a few hours away and I don't get to see my parents nearly as much as I would like. But one thing I will always have is this memory.
The Pirates need to move to San Juan so they can be the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Chris Noone If UA-cam was like Reddit, then I would give you platinum.
YES!!!!!...🇵🇷👍

I know this is a joke, but I'll say this anyway. I like the idea of an MLB franchise in Puerto Rico, but the pirates don't deserve to be relocated. As much as I hate the other two Pittsburgh sports franchises, the Pirates have a dedicated fanbase that's just sick of losing and their moron owner. They need to stay in Pittsburgh
Bonds in the Pirates jersey 🔥🔥
I ❤ you!
Amazing how a man with a nice medium build could become a blob with a head 3 hat sizes larger in just a few years without using steroids.
@@indy_go_blue6048 he could have been great for what he used to be. But yeah, he chose to go for the drugs to taint it all.
Just Saying he was great before drugs, but he ruined his chances. It’s sad really! Even as a Braves fan who is still upset about him beating Hank Aaron’s HR record, I still wonder about what could have been if he didn’t get on steroids.
A game of inches possibly changes the course of time and history.. Bonds makes a more on line throw to home, nails Sid Bream out, game goes to extras, Bonds hits go ahead HR, Pirates go to and win World Series, Bonds stays in Pittsburgh, never has to use steroids, and is in the Hall of Fame already..
Not using Skip Caray's Call is a sin to baseball
They may have to hospitalize Sid Bream...
I stuck around just to hear it... wtf
Turner Kirby Man you aint ever lied. I'll never forget it "Braves win, Braves win, Braves win." How could you not have gone with that call.
@@jaf00181 I agree. Skip Caray's call should have been on there
ua-cam.com/video/QaopXinn1Kw/v-deo.html
You're welcome.
And there’s still the unexplored sideplots to consider:
- Sid Bream’s multiple knee operations
- Justice with an OF assist that prevented a third Pirates run
- Kirk Gibson signing with the Pirates only to be released in April
- Otis Nixon being in this postseason after missing the 91 postseason due to a drug suspension
2007 NL Tiebreaker between the Rockies and Padres would be a great rewinder
also the one between the Twins and Tigers in 2009
"The Twins have won the central!!"
legend has it
Matt Holliday has still not touched home plate
Not to be overdramatic, but Sid Bream's slide is probably the single greatest moment in all of human history. It's like we were all building up to that point.
Instead of giving you something you wanted, baseball gave you something you NEEDED.
Your vids are so dope man. Larry Walker deserves the Hall.
To this day, Sid Bream is still rounding third base.
Should have been called out. :)
Foolish Baseball completely agree!!!!
Rewinder Suggestion: Joe Carter's 1993 Walk Off...So many potential story lines in that one:
- The Joe Carter/Robbie Alomar trade (which was panned at the time)
- The rag-tag Phillies underdog run
- Williams amazing season as a closer
- The Jays roster turn over from the 1992 WS winning team to the 1993 (Including the Dave Winfield dispute)
- The Jays trade for Ricky Henderson that was almost Randy Johnson
- And so much more!
Edward Thomas Swan although the end result broke my young heart at the time, it was a fantastic World Series. Great back story for both teams that season as well. Might need the very deepest of rewinds.
I have to ask, are you, perhaps, a Blue Jays fan?
The pain of watching this replay as a Pirates fan is indescribable
As a Braves fan I still can't believe Bream beat that throw.
@@johncmoore416 He did, and I am a Pirates fan, Bream now lives in Pittsburgh now, hope I get to see him and say, 'you were safe.'
Im gonna keep commenting this but do the 2011 World Series Game 6 David Freeze clutch hit
DEFINITELY
Marlins 03 playoff run was insane too I’m waiting on that
They should do Cruz's ALCS hr too
I would love a Rewinder episode on 2011 World Series Game 6 (David Freese's HR in the 11th inning). The game was bonkers, being a very ugly, error-filled game early that turned into the greatest late inning drama game I have ever watched.
I've commented this for months too.
Finally, an rewind that actually goes into Georgia's team favor.
Soon, they might do one on Atlanta United. Winning the MLS cup in year two of existing

Just Saying that’s completely true I just looked it up. They had some really good players and they hit home runs too just not as much as the Yankees. Overall though I always felt Billy Been was overrated as a gm
Skip with one of greatest calls of all time.. “Braves win . Braves win . Braves win”
Wait Randy Marsh? Lmao that's so cool
I was 8 yrs old and can remember my pops screaming downstairs and we got out of bed and joined the party. Great times as a kid in Atlanta in the 90s
Do Evan Longoria's Walk-off Homerun in "Game 162" in the 2011 season. There was so much build-up behind that shot and so many different circumstances that led to it.
163*?
@@buzzy2738 Ahh, c'mon man, we didnt kill your playoff chances. You did, no offence but the Red Sox blew a pretty big lead in the wildcard race to lead up to that final game.
@@misocriallo4379 It was actually game 162, last game of the regular season. We clinched a wildcard birth before it came down to that.
@@pridewinner6604 we in Baltimore would like to take credit for ending Bostons' season that year lol. Between BOS/BAL and NYY/TB in the AL and Cardinals jumping over the Braves in the NL WC race on the last day in (not quite as) dramatic fashion that day was completely insane. For Bmore it was the closest we'd had to a playoff baseball atmosphere in 14 years and we loved every second of it
Absolutely.

Me, every time before clicking on these videos.
Some surprising parallels between the 92 Pirates and the 2018 Steelers in regards to stars' departures
Just when the pain starts to subside, you put this video out
Jacob Johnston Imagine being an Indians fan like me, with everyone talking about the 2016 World Series. That loss in Game 7 upset me so much that I didn’t go to school that day, I laid in my bed bawling my eyes out, it is 3 years later, and the pain never ceases. I’m literally crying while writing this.
One thing I love about this that went unsaid: Bonds put a ton of work into his defense and went from being a below-average left-fielder to a Gold Glove winner. At the time, his game really only had one liability - a weak throwing arm.
need a rewinder for Ottawa vs. Pittsburgh Chris Kunitz Double OT Goal in Game 7 2017
You should do a rewinder video on the UMBC upset over Virginia in March madness
Another inning of baseball that's worth a rewind is the 2015 ALDS Texas vs. Toronto. I remember rushing home from work early thinking I missed the game only to begin to watch the seventh inning, the craziest inning I've every seen in all my life.
For more context, the reason why this moment is so incredible is because Sid Bream had extremely bad knees, thus making it super hard for him to run. The fact that he even went around third alone was a miracle, but beating the throw home is what made this moment legendary (and also skip carays call which was incredible)
For SB Nation's "Weird Rules" series, you guys should do an episode on a game from this 1992 season (Sept. 27, 1992) between the Blue Jays and Yankees. With Jack Morris starting and the Jays up 9-0 in the top of the 5th, heavy rain started coming down, so the Jays tried to hurry up and get past the 5th, to make the game official, and give Morris his 20th win. The Jays batters were swinging at every pitch to make it happen, but Alfredo Griffin stole the show by striking out on a pitch WAY up and outside, it's literally the worst-looking strikeout in MLB history. In the end, Morris got his 20th win after a long rain delay. Still funny though...the video of Griffin's strikeout is somewhere on youtube.
I REMEMBER THAT GAME! That was so funny! Not only was the pitch WAY outside, the catcher couldn't catch it, and Griffin just wheeled on his heel and walked back to the dugout. If I remember correctly the umpire ordered Griffin to go to first. Griffin was put into the game to pinch hit specifically to strike out so no one whose career wasn't about to end would take the hit to their numbers.... if I remember correctly.
@@angelabayley9705 Griffin actually started at SS in that game lol. Here's the boxscore... www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA199209270.shtml Evidently Griffin didn't make it to first, as the catcher most likely threw it to the first baseman by the time Griffin realized he had to run.
Man, what a great comment. Just looked up that video and Griffin's swing is so much worse than I could've expected. Funny stuff!
I remember watching that game. Griffin wasn't that tall but he must have swung at a pitch five feet over the strike zone; and possibly a foot out too.
HOLY S#!% the first pitch was pretty bad then I saw strike 3 the ball wasnt even in the frame
love the story (not sure if it's true) of Andy V.S. telling Bonds to move over and Bonds flipping him off just prior to the play.
I remember hearing about that. Van Slyke was interviewed several years ago about that. Given Bonds' attitude at that time, it honestly wouldn't shock me at all if it was true.
Whoa, don't forget about Lonnie Smith, I heard he is.... pretty good
TheHolySC and then he ran and gave Scheirholtz hug
*Seinfeld theme plays*
Lonnie Smith got punked by Chuck Knoblauch in the 1991 world series
He did hit a Grand Slam during the 92 WS. In case anyone is confused the baserunning play was a year before.
Thank you for doing this.
The amount of research you do for these is incredible. Props x100.
Im a simple man. I see a SB Nation video in my recommended and i click on it.

That was in game 6, though.
Yeah..so what? It's still one of 2 walkoff World Series homeruns in baseball history lol
I was literally saying last week that you needed to do this video. Thanks for reading my mind!!!
Excellent analysis ... and sense of history.
It was THIS game, as a 12yo, that I decided that I wanted to play baseball.
Thanks Skip!
As a lifelong pirates fan, this video hurt my soul. We literally weren't competitive for 20 years after Sid Bream. This loss didn't even happen in my lifetime and it still hurts cause of how bad the franchise is. With all the NL Central spending big and the pirates in the basement of salaries in the league they're probably not going to be relevant for a while. I personally wish that the divisions would be realigned and the pirates get put back in the NL East (not like that would make the pirates competitive or anything). Anyways, phenomenal video and phenomenal channel
I vividly remember watching this when I was 11. I was rooting for Pit.
I am not a sports fan but this channel is one of the most engaging I have ever subbed to.
This moment saved my life. I had been holding my breath since the beginning of the Braves' half of the inning.
I remember watching this when it happened. It was heartbreaking. You owe Pirate fans redress for reminding us of this. I suggest Mazeroski's walk-off home run that ended the 1960 World Series or Clemente's 3000th hit.
These rewinder episodes are incredible! Well done
Home field advantage wasn’t determined by the better record back then. It switched yearly from Eastern champion to West
Loved the buildup great video
I love the way they end it
And welcome to a moment in history

Can't like this video enough. Braves fan since I moved to Atlanta as a 5 year old. Braves country extended all the way to Lexington Kentucky. And here we are on the cusp of our window opening up for playoff contention.
Thanks for finally using my suggested topic!!!
I forgot how good those Pirates teams were during the early 90’s.
Do game 7 of the 1991 World Series. Greatest World Series of all time. Twins vs Braves
Both teams went worst to first, Kirby’s catch and walkoff in game 6, jack morris 10 shutout innings. Gene Larkin who was on one leg, hit the walk off
I might be biased since I was 5 and a huge Sox fan when it happened (and my dad was in his mid 30s and an even bigger Sox fan), but I feel like the bloody sock game is worth a rewind. Schilling’s performance, the glove hit by a-rod, the rioting in yankee stadium, the nypd coming on field, and the tight finish to push it to game 7 feels like a great episode waiting to happen!
Keep up the great work, haven’t really been a sports fan in years but you guys are so awesome you help me feel that same energy I used to for sports. :)
I don't even watch baseball, i just like these rewinds
I know everyone wants the 2011 WS where my Rangers chocked, but can you at least add the Nelson Cruz walk off grand slam. That was the best game I've ever been to and ball landed about 6 rows in front of us. Go Rangers!
YES. THE EPISODE WE NEEDED.
Great video as always. You know what would be cool to see an episode on, is the Rockies-Cubs Wild Card game from last year. That ish was wild and has some great stories
John McSherry collapsed and died on the field a few years later.
as a resident of Pittsburgh and being not old enough to see this all I know is that I shouldn’t mention it around my parents. My mom and dad talk about this game like it’s 9/11, mentioning the exact place they were when this happened. My dad was at some internship while My mom was actually at this game and fully gave up on the team since. With the pirates finally looking to a bright future I actually got both of them to agree to watch a game this year after they won there 5th of 5 games so far. I haven’t been much of a fan of baseball but I’m just a fan of Pittsburgh sports in general so hopefully this can sow something.
I live for SB Nation baseball content.
Wow who would have known that a geologist from South Park, Colorado would umpire one of the most iconic moments in MLB history
"And then they lost the World Series again". I died a little bit there. At least they got their win in 95. Requests. Helmut Rahn's World Cup winning goal in 1954. Jim McMahon to Clay Brown to win the 1980 Holiday Bowl. Alec Martinez's 2014 Stanley Cup winning goal. Mario Goetze's World Cup winning goal in 2014. Patric Hornqvist's 2017 Stanley Cup winning goal.
The slide finally thank you so much guys
I really dig these rewinder joints.
This channel is so underrated.
I was there, 8th row behind the Pirates' dugout. After the 8th, people were streaming out of Fulton Co. Stadium. My friend and I stayed. It was the single most exciting sporting experience of my life (I'm now 51). After the lead-off double, people started trickling back in, just in case. I've never seen fans go so bananas. We all lingered yelling and screaming for at least 30 minutes. I'll never forget it. I also recall that Mark Lemke (Braves' 2nd baseman) said post game, "If you'd have told me Sid was gonna try and score from 2nd on a base hit I'd have told him to make sure he gets his knees up as he crosses the mound." Hahahaha! So hilarious.
Other things that might deserve a rewind:
Carlton Fisk's "waved fair" homer in '75
The Cardinal's Game 6 comeback in 2011
The Cubs' 2016 WS win after 108 years
The Royals' win 1985 WS Game 6
Then there are things that deserve one but for which footage might not exist, like the Shot Heard 'Round the World or Mazeroski's 1960 HR against the Yankees.
Montana to Clark "The Catch"
The Giant's Super Bowl XLII win over the undefeated Patriots
And, to be fair, the Patriots 25-point comeback over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI
The Bills' 32-point comeback against Houston
For the 3rd one, NO

Duh.....scalding hot take. Don't fall off that limb, Daredevil.
Everything Remains Raw Podcast well I don’t see him in the hall
@@TheLocalLt
Clemens should be in the HoF, before Bonds can get in, mainly because the issue with Bonds involves actual evidence of cheating, where as with Clemens it is all suppositions, but nothing concrete. In the end, these two are CLEARLY HoF-worthy, and they had the chops to get in, before the juiced era of baseball, started up...
Put them both in!!!!!
He wasn’t at all. He had 3 good seasons and 3 elite seasons. If you think 7 seasons is enough to have a hall of fame career over you’re dumb as hell. He wasn’t a bonafide hall of famer until the late 90’s.
SCep34life I know but when I say “in Pittsburgh” I really mean his whole career prior to 1999 when he began juicing. Which he only did because McGwire and Sosa stole the spotlight from him so he wanted to get on an even playing field with them. And he emerged on top as expected by breaking McGwires record
I remember playing a random baseball game on the SNES as a kid and Pittsburgh was unfairly good
I was 42, an RN, and working the evening shift. Only one of my patients had the playoffs on his tv so I'd drop in on him every so often to catch a few minutes (with invitation, of course.) So I happened to step into his room just a minute before (IMO) the greatest ending of a game in MLB history. Sid Bream was so damn slow it would take a miracle for him to beat the throw (after the game Skip Carey said his Indian name was "Thundering Herd") but he did and I went crazy. Of course they lost the WS against the Blue Jays, but this is still a great baseball memory.
I think joe carters walk off home Run in the 93 World Series deserves a deep rewind.
Now you should do the 1991 World Series game 7 walk off
The Pirates have the 4th best stadium in the MLB after Wrigley, Fenway and Dodger Stadium. Its a shame that the on field product has been poor for years.
2006 NLCS Game 7
Mets powerhouse team that finally looked to have put it together. Cardinals team that was barely .500... Oliver Perez who had a 6.55 ERA that year pitching the game of his life. Endy Chavez miraculous catch. MVP candidate vs rookie with the bases loaded to decide who goes to the World Series.
That game had so much.

I gave up watching bb until the '16 WS (Cubs-Indians was a winner either way) and gave up again afterwards. I like these YT videos though.

4:05 - Jim Leyland stormed(?) GM office and threatened him to not trade Bonds.
SB Nation, you guys should do a video about Dock Ellis, the pitcher who threw a no hitter while high on acid.
Also keep up the great work
Legend goes that Barry Bonds was called to play shallow by the Pirates center fielder Van Slyke, but Bonds shook him off. Bonds was a perfect ballplayer except for his weak arm. It cost him here, where his throw was just a hair late. Who knows if this is true though, as Van Slyke is a known loud mouth with a grudge against Bonds.

Jonny Watts correction. The Pirates won the NL wild card game against the Reds in 2013, and lost the wild card game to the Giants in 2014. So your statement is inaccurate!
Yall should do a episode on everything that lead up to the Astros 2017 ws championship or at least the walk off of game 5 of that world series cause so much went into it. So much information that makes it one of the greatest ws games of all time
