- This is the 3/25/1978 Duke vs Notre Dame game. Final Four played in St Louis. Duke was the surprise team of 1978 with Jim Spanarkle. Mike Gminski and frosh phenom Gene Banks. Notre Dame is a school reknown for football but has good basketball tradition as well. Surprisingly, this w remains their only final four appearence. Bruce Flowers, Bill Laimbeer and Kelly Tripucka dotted the Irish lineup. For this game the lineup of broadcasters was as good as I've ever seen on TV. Bryant Gumble hosted and two teams had commentary. Curt Gowdy, Billy Packer, Dick Enberg and al Maguire. I claim no rights.
Amazes me that, although I wasn't a particular fan of either school, I can almost recall both team's starting lineups (well, 8 out of ten). I was that much of a fan of college hoops in the day. I'm hard pressed to remember more than 3 players from the 2024 championship game. One & Done, the transfer portal, etc. have killed this once great game!
@carseye. Very true
Agree strongly.
I wholeheartedly agree!!! College and NBA Basketball are a shell of themselves!
At the start with the player interviews, you get a clear indication that this was about the moment....the schools....the prestige....the fans,& most importantly.....the chance to win a National Championship. Ironically, none of those factors seem to mean anything to today's college basketball (& football) players. I'm so grateful that Social Media wasn't a thing during my childhood.
The late 70s were great for college sports, music all of it. This announcing team was great also.
Curt Gowdy doing his last final four for NBC.
ND with a furious rally but Duke hit all of their free throws down the stretch.
I wondered why Curt was still doing the Final 4 when he was completely out of NBC's college basketball coverage that season. Enberg, Packer and McGuire had been settled on as a 3-person crew and were spectacularly successful. Gowdy being inserted at the Final 4 seemed like an imposition. Nothing against him, but 4 was a crowd.
Commentators:
Dick Enberg, Billy Packer & Al McGuire
Pre & Post Game:
Bryant Gumbel
Curt Gowdy and Billy Packer in this game, and I assume Dick Enberg and Al McGuire on the other semi-final.
Problem was the winner had to play Kentucky in Final. And the experienced and talented Wildcats weren't losing. Another unfortunate think for Duke was with all those young players the program underachieved the next 3 seasons
ND might have had a better chance than Duke, because ND played Kentucky in Louisville every year in those days. On New Year’s Eve 1977, Kentucky beat ND by only 5 points. ND would’ve relished the opportunity to play UK on a neutral court for a change. But they couldn’t overcome their lousy start against Duke.
@@johnmanier7968 other problem for Notre Dame was Digger Phelps.
Love norte dame warm up shirts
It's took place in st Louis, but their using the floor of Indiana
The NCAA decided that the floor in the St. Louis arena was substandard. Apparently IU’s floor was easier to transport to St. Louis than any other options.
@@johnmanier7968when did the NCAA figure that out?
@@steveprestegard5151 They actually asked Bobby Knight to assess the Checkerdome floor. He dribbled around on it for about a half-hour (and presumably threw a chair across it 😏) and said it was not up to snuff. IU's floor was trucked in. That was a lucky floor for Kentucky. The Wildcats won there in a blow out in Dec. '76, and won in a close one in Dec. '78. So that made four consecutive games UK won on that floor!
Ima lifetime Duke fan. This is gold!
This is quite the find
Believe it or not that was when tar heels we pulled for duke to win if we where not there…Now we hate them and they hate us lol….
Bryant Gumbel should have never shaved his afro.
The Irish look good with those green socks. Billy Packer not as good, with out counterbalance from Al McGuire.
Back when b gumbel had a brain. Instead of worrying about his millions.
I liked college basketball back when they gave white players a fair chance to play.
Nice try troll. Which white players haven’t gotten a fair chance recently?
@@smarks12 you must been living in a cave last 35 yrs boy. College basketball is 14% White Americans. Anybody with a brain can see that.

Gowdy was such an idiot...in every game and every sport. "Duke is the best college free-throw shooting team in the country." Really Curt...not as good as Manzano High School or the Celtics?? He continuously vomited worthless facts and observations. Watch some of the older Rose Bowl games. As the game-winning field goal sails thru the uprights, the players celebrate on the field, the fans go wild; silence for a few seconds in the booth before Curt exclaims, "it's....ahhh....GOOD!" Enberg was always soooo much better.
I have mixed feelings about Curt Gowdy. He really made modern sports TV broadcasting. He had a flow and a style like a fan you were attending the game with. But as the years went on, he kept making awful mistakes with players' names, calling Marquette's Bernard Toone "Tone" throughout the final game in 1977, among other flubs. He had overstayed his welcome at NBC.
