  • Thank you @faithfulfarmingfamily for this reel which is such an interesting take on such a valuable topic!
Harvard Grant Study, which has been running since 1938 to present (the longest-running longitudinal study in history) has identified two key things that enable adults to be happy and successful:
    First, love.
    Second, work ethic.
The Harvard Grant Study is an 85-year continuing longitudinal study from the Study of Adult Development at Harvard Medical School, started in 1938. It has followed 268 Harvard-educated men, the majority of whom were members of the undergraduate classes of 1942, 1943 and 1944. It was run in tandem with a study called "The Glueck Study," which included a second cohort of 456*** disadvantaged, non-delinquent inner-city youths who grew up in Boston neighborhoods between 1940 and 1945.
    WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
✅ Get your child involved in all aspects of running your home: cooking, cleaning, yard work (you can start as early as 18 months)
✅ Having a part-time job in the teens years can be vital to feelings of competency & developing responsibility
✅ Get your children volunteering in your local community

This is so true. My dad kept us busy with domestic chores & sports.
Summers, you're idle. Read the dictionary. I'm ridiculously articulate.
Bored during the summer read the encylopedia. Got thru A-F.
Now, I can speak on a variety of topics.
Want to play outside. There's the garden. I met so many four-legged & no legged pals. Now, I'm an animal advovate, as well.

I’m so glad you had a good experience from your childhood. My childhood was incredibly similar to what you describe! And I struggle with my mental health immensely. I think the parenting style has more to do with it. I never felt like my efforts were good enough. I would clean and clean and if it wasn’t perfect my father would make us do it again, no breaks, even if we had been at it for hours and were exhausted. Responsibility is necessary for children, but parents need to acknowledge a child limits and give them time to be a kid. If my parents had accepted my efforts and acknowledged that a 7 year old can’t be perfect I probably would have had so much more self esteem. Instead I learned that if it isn’t perfect then it’s worthless, and so am I. Please take time to praise your kids for their efforts. It’s so important for their confidence

This is so true! I'm a 51 yr old women mother of two very entitled daughters. I did way too much for them, and I regret my choices now.

This is mine and my husbands dream. To have a small farm for food and for a good environment for our child. Its so beautiful and worth the hard work.

Hard times make strong men, strong men make easy times, easy times make weak men, weak men make hard times, time repeats itself

And this study would explain why later generations are so emotionally frail and don't really want to work for anything.
