It's a bit hard to fully swing a long driver and keep control of the club through impact. I also have some nasty banana slices that developed (I'm right handed golfer).
Haha, funny you should ask! My 3 wood at 43.5 inches has the same speed as my driver! So I made the experiment and it worked; but I need to dial in the weight of the shaft vs the length and kick point. So if this is the same case for you, then well worth pursuing. Stay tuned!

I am 73 years old. Started playing at 60. At the moment I have a 10.2 index. I am driving the ball 180-200 yds carry 190-220 distance and that is on good contact. A few years ago I was 20-30 yds farther on both counts. I don't know if it is just that I am getting older or something has happened in my swing. Or a combo of both. My point being, how much improvement can I as a 73-year-old ( I am in very good shape ) really see using your approach? I have been watching your videos for a few months, and just joined your premium channel. By using your approach I can see so much improvement in my GIR now. I feel like I am making more ball-first contact compared to a few months ago. I don't really expect to hit it 300 yds. but realistically what can I expect?
The average is 30 yards more Arthur; you gather a full backswing like in the “senior series” and then learn how to throw the club to engage the kinetic chain in the “throwing series” and the “kinetic chain engagement series” and get a full release of the arm anatomy as in the “release” videos.
I would also recommend you look up dr.kwon here on youtube. look into his rope drill and his step drills. I would be shocked if you don't gain some speed from those.
Wow, the average club head speed for LPGA tour pros is 94mph. Crazy to see you getting into the 110 range! I'm sure that was a lot of work, inspiring :D
Hey Jarod! Check out her instagram; we are pushing 120 soon! Yes, it is a lot of work but she is having fun with it! Already more PB’s in competition with a 337 yard poke at Mesquite Long Drive and a 5th place there and a ninth place in Hobe Sound!
Shawn, I love your videos. I am 62 years old, 6'5" tall, 350 lbs, and I HAVE NO ELBOW IN MY LEFT ARM, thanks to a nearly fatal climbing accident 26 years ago. Thus, I cannot keep my left arm “straight” in my backswing, and I can barely curl 5 pounds with my left arm. My normal carry with my driver is about 220 yards, sometimes getting up to about 230, and my clubhead speed is about 93 mph. The day before my accident I was a -2 handicap who routinely drove the ball 350+ with a dogwood head 12° driver fitted with a 42.5" Dynamic Gold S-300 shaft. It's a miracle I can play golf at all, and an even bigger miracle that I am today a -9 handicap. I am working on my fitness level - especially with my legs and core - and want to be able to drive the ball 300 again while there is still time left to do it. Given my physical impairment, do you think it is possible?
P.S. I cannot execute the “throw” drill I see you using with Moo and Sav, even though I think this is an excellent drill, because once I let go of the club with my hands I have no way to decelerate my left arm and avoid an injury to the shoulder caused by hyperextension. It is really scary when my right hand sometimes comes off the club during full swing - I have no choice but to let go with my left hand, too, and the club flies away behind me. For that reason, I do not allow anyone to stand behind me when I am hitting a ball; I am afraid I might hit them should I have to let go of the club.
How is your tennis backhand Tony? While you are continuing to play right handed, you will want to have a couple left handed clubs to hit balls with everyday. I have the exact same club speed from both sides and you can see my 2 driver fittings with Ping (one right and one left) right here: ua-cam.com/video/Oq0IJAhbEX0/v-deo.html
I have that swing caddy. I can also make it 'click' at 110 - but my drives still top off at 280 on the average. I can get a 300 now and then - but that is probably once every 70 drives (5 rounds). The biggest thing for me is spin rate and AOA. On the flip side though - I've also realized that while distance is nice to have - it is not necessary to post low scores. I shot my PB averaging only 270y off the men's tees (not the tips). Once i start 'going for distance' i find i actually miss a lot more fairways. Whereas my 270-280 drives will give me about 11 to 12 out of 14 fairways per round.
This is what is great; it actually is the easy part! Now the next phase is hey, what do you want to score based on your potential? and let’s get organized to go fetch that!

quick note about the swing caddie i have one and highly recommend because it helps you discover more efficient swing mechanics. but its not 100 percent accurate on the speeds. I also have a mevo plus and it measures swing speed. when i click the swing caddie at 110 mph, I'm actually swinging closer to 102-104. And when i click it at the max speed 130 mph I'm actually swinging around 118 mph. I know because this is about where i top out speed-wise, for now. so it seems the closer you get to the max speed on the swing caddie the more off it is. I still recommend just good info to know so you guys don't think your swinging 130 mph lol.
I have been watching these videos for a little while. I played more than 18 holes for the first time causing pain in both big toes. Any thoughts about that?
Glad to hear it Michael! Plenty more where that came from! When you search golf stuff, just add “shawn clement’s wisdom in golf” and I have a video or 5 on that subject. 😀👍
I know you've done videos on the swing caddy in the past, but can you give an updated one. How do you know if you are using it correctly? Does it not make the sound if you don't swing it fast enough?
Is amazing sharing again. If I be given an opportunity to learn from Pro. Shawn C., Definitely It will be a blessing and I will be back on track again. Unfortunately I don't think may get any chances at all due to distance and wealth by fulfillments of my dream to meet up and learn feom Pro Shawn C. Best regards from Anthony Phan. Absolutely loving your content! I’m considering going premium…mostly bc I feel so guilty having improved from just watching your free videos. I can only imagine how much more I could learn. Thank you 🙏
Hey Shawn, thanks for all these videos! Which of your videos should I be watching for learning how to get pure contact with irons? I’ve been struggling with contact lately and your videos seem really informative and well-made.
You bet Robby! See any of the “strike irons pure shawn clement” or “great drill with irons shawn clement” or simply “irons shawn clement”-I HAVE A TON OF GREAT ONES THERE!
Shawn I have the newer Pro version that tops out at 135 MPH. I can make that snap at that tension setting, but I am only seeing a top speed of between 105-110 with my speed radar unit. Actual ball carry is less than 250 with my Ping G400 max driver. Why the big difference between Swing caddy and real ball numbers??
Hi Kenneth! They sent the pro model to me and we did a tweak to raise the resistance; I have to swing at super high speed and get everything out of my slash to get it to snap at 135 now and I do it 1 out of 5 times; the setting at 110 of the original is really good. See if Yong can take it back and get you the new and improved pro model!
Shawn does Mu offer web consults? Looking for someone to create a golf workout routine for me. I've been in the 260-280 range for a while (~100SS) and I want to strengthen my core/hip flexibility etc. Trying to get me over that 300 hump.
What are your thoughts on the ball making a difference in yardage, i was at an indoor range the other day and a nice old lady offered me a ball to try and every club was going 20-30 yards longer, my longest drive being 340yrds not necessarily swinging out of my shoes either
Golf Ball makes a huge difference! one of my students was playing a TP5 X and then I gave him a Callaway Chrome soft and he was 7 yards longer on irons and 10 yards longer on woods. He also hit the Titleist longer too; Ball fittings are real! Trying different manufacturers I think is key too when doing ball trials.
Love the videos and am just starting to get the hang of all of your analogies. To the point where am clearly 300 with a good drive and carrying 35 degree 7i about 170-180. However with the longer irons and occasional drive I get a bit snap hooky, why might this be? When I hit driver my start point is about 4” behind the ball should I be doing similar with long iron and 3 wood?? Many thanks Dan from UK
Hey Dan! Good comment and feedback! Long irons require you to be a bit farther away from the ball and pre-deply your hands a bit more from the body; see an oldie but goodie called “swing plane update shawn clement” and “distance to ball with all clubs shawn clement” The driver is the only club that you will set up 4” behind as it is the only one you will be hitting up on. Shawn
@@golflessons Thanks for the advice, will check it out! Also are there any instructors in the UK that teach similar methods to you that you could recommend? Many thanks Dan
Shawn, what kind of height are you getting on your drives? Just curious. My swing speed is similar to yours, and when hitting my driver squarely, with your method, I don't think I'm getting the carry I should (9 degree, TSi3, fitted driver). Looking forward to hearing your response. Thanks! p.s. Over the top is completely out of the question now after using your driver setup, and I love it!!!

See you in there!
Is there a video where you can see what +7 AoA is compared to say 0 AoA? Sav's +7 and you can see her spine tilt is really pronounced (like mine) and your +8 and you don't have that much spine tilt. What gives? In my quest to add to my current AoA of +2, I feel like my side tilt has gotten extremely exaggerated to the point where it's already hurting my lower back (trail side). Sav can really hit those bombs easy!
Out of curiosity whats the elevation of the sim set at? I have been losing my mind with my 112 mph swing speed and comparing launch monitor numbers. Very similar numbers , yet im max 260 carry at sea level. I know there are alot of variables but losing 25 yards is a ton. Very similar launch angle / aoa / spin.
@golflessons thanks for the reply! im actually on a mevo+ with professional package / face impact and such. I have thought for sometime its been underreporting drives especially. My drives on course seem to be much further. Ill have to bring it to the course next time and compare.
@@tehrage115 EXACTLY WHY I NEVER GOT THE TRACKMAN!! Did not match what I was doing on the golf course while the Foresight GC Hawk or GC Quad are ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON.
Struggling with the driver. I can hit every other club in my bag with consistency in carry distance. PW to 140 carry, 5 hybrid to 195 carry, etc. But I can only carry my driver 215-225. Can't quite seem to get the speed or consistency I'm looking for...
Yes, there is a specific reason for that! If your brain perceives you are trying to manipulate the club to meet the ball, it will freeze the body and turn you into a statue. If you are in the process of using weight to deliver an action towards the target, you engage the body’s kinetic chain and get a golf swing with all the trimmings. On our premium channel, the video would be called “using the weight in your swing, axe drill with Savy”
I think a lot of that lack of movement in Amateurs was a function of the X factor road the pros went down. Even if performed correctly it was hard on the back to perform probably lead to arm swinging with minimal lower body action. Agree with Shawn's approach completely given I play with significant lower back issues.
@@deanc8077 you bet Dean, great comment and I am very glad the trends are moving away from that nasty gopher hole. WAY TOO MANY suffered needless injuries with that one!
Great video! But in what golf world does a ball roll that far(30Yrds) on a golf course. Just use carry . If your launching it that high noway does it roll that far on watered grass.
At our course, you are right! But many courses in the US that are sand based fairways roll way more; Riviera This year was yielding 70 yard rolls and I played that course twice! So, I am sticking to the good old default mode on the GC Quad and it has served us extremely well with our clients so far. Got Callaway Fitter of the year in Canada 2 years running since using this puppy and all my students corroborate the yardages.
@@golflessons well i stand corrected! Keep hitting bombs. You produce good quality videos . Here at Grayhawk in Scottsdale noway does the ball roll that far. NCAAs are in a few weeks . Rough is up and fairways are soft.
@@gilbertamthor5098 nice! Actually Sav’s first drives over 300 were in your neck of the woods! We did a couple videos at Papago and we did notice that yea, you got extra for the slight elevation but the roll on the fairways was not that big as the fairways were kept a bit shaggy.
@@golflessons agree. I play Papago often. Great track and ASUs home course. Greens can get wicked fast. And i play talking stick where i just had my first senior tour win as an Amateur with a 68 . We moved here in Dec from La costa in carlsbad. Handicap bounced up from +4 to +2 here. I had alot of trouble with the firmer greens here. No dart throwing. But for racing Ironmans for 22 yrs and switching to golf the game is getting solid. I enjoy some of your ideas and use them in my set up.
The minimum you need depends on the heat of the day. If you golf in AZ and I golf in WA, you'll be swinging less than I will to reach 300. There's more to this than head speed. Don't believe the hype. This video might be accurate for where they are. Distance depends on air temp as much as head speed. But like I said, in colder conditions you need more behind it.
Yes, correct! These are neutral settings; and yes, it will be more in AZ and in the heat of TX and yes, it will be shorter at soggy sea level cool conditions.

How does the actual ball fight/distance compare with the stimulator?
Exactly the same! Just amazing this GC Quad from FORESIGHT; YOU EVEN HEAR THE BALL LAND AT THE SAME TIME AS YOU SEE THE BALL LAND!!😀👍👌💪
I have been watching these videos for a little while. I played more than 18 holes for the first time causing pain in both big toes. Any thoughts about that?
Brilliant video what circuit does Sav play on she’s fantastic you must be so proud
Thank you Samuel! we have mostly played locally because of Covid the last couple years; we hope this changes this year!
Great video, how high do you tee up the ball?
Ball is above the club; but it is different for everyone for the skill they have at the time…
Best golf instruction I've ever watchef
Glad to hear it Michael! Plenty more where that came from! When you search golf stuff, just add “shawn clement’s wisdom in golf” and I have a video or 5 on that subject. 😀👍
I know you've done videos on the swing caddy in the past, but can you give an updated one. How do you know if you are using it correctly? Does it not make the sound if you don't swing it fast enough?
We did one for the guys at Swing Caddy; they should have it on their website! 😀👍
Country of Malaysia.
Hi Anthony! Hopefully one day we will be able to meet! 😀👍
Shawn love the video. Question for you, I know in a previous video you talk about soleing the club at address, do you do this as well with the driver?
Absolutely loving your content! I’m considering going premium…mostly bc I feel so guilty having improved from just watching your free videos. I can only imagine how much more I could learn. Thank you 🙏
Right on Robert! You are so welcome! You will enjoy it, it is my life’s work in there! 👍😀
Great advice as always Shawn 👍🏾
Shawn wait is the swing trainer that Sav is using called?
Nvm. Found it when I replayed your video.
Called “swing caddy”; the link is in the description! 😀👍
A beyond-impact release with a two-arm swing in an one-arm fashion!
Shawn would working out change things? Make things feel different?
@@golflessons Thanks for your response!
Any advice would be gratefully received…
Hey Dan! Good comment and feedback! Long irons require you to be a bit farther away from the ball and pre-deply your hands a bit more from the body; see an oldie but goodie called “swing plane update shawn clement” and “distance to ball with all clubs shawn clement”
The driver is the only club that you will set up 4” behind as it is the only one you will be hitting up on. Shawn
@@golflessons Thanks for the advice, will check it out! Also are there any instructors in the UK that teach similar methods to you that you could recommend? Many thanks Dan
@@danieljanes9368 check out Adam Gray! UK: Adam Gray- adam11111gray@yahoo.co.uk
Do you have any comments on Savs forward shaft lean at adress? "Many" other teachers suggest a very neutral adress with the driver. Thx!
Good Stuff!
Angle of attack is 5 to 7 degrees up and launching at 15 to 16 degrees with spin rate at 2000 RPM and height is 100 feet.
Thanks! I'm a bit "spinnier", I think at 2300-2400, and height is closer to 120 feet. I'll get some video to you, and we can go from there. @@golflessons
Would the snap of that training device come at impact or after
Well past impact; towards the target
@@golflessons
It would be cool if a light would come on at the “snap”. Then in slow motion one could “see” the snap.
@@glennwisse6271 THE NEW ONES ACTUALLY DO THAT!!!👍😀💪
Nice hits! My local range has top tracer and those hits would be 220 total I hit 174 ball speed and I only carry 260 /290 total drives me nuts.
Different machine; see about your spin rate and where you are hitting on the club face!
Right so you and Sav have peaked my interest, I comment all the time but I am going to bite and get premium. How can I rebuild. I am 6'2 and 225lbs and hit it about 260 max. I am not getting enough out of my golf.
Have you got a link
Hey Andrew! You bet, it is always in our description and it is www.wisdomingolfpremium.com
Start with the “senior series” which is a series on power for everyone, then see the “throwing series”, all the “release” videos from the search box, the “predict contact”. “goldie-locks series” and all the “driver” videos that the search box gives you.
Very similar launch angle / aoa / spin.
it is at factory settings; but are you on trackman or foresight? they will defer by about 20 yards shorter on Trackman!
What lengths do each of your drivers play at?
45 inches; and that is funny because my 43.5 inch 3 wood has the same swing speed…so experimenting with the same length there too! 😀👍
How long is this driver shaft?
44
Struggling with the driver. I can hit every other club in my bag with consistency in carry distance. PW to 140 carry, 5 hybrid to 195 carry, etc. But I can only carry my driver 215-225. Can't quite seem to get the speed or consistency I'm looking for...
See our “driver speed and smash shawn clement golf wrx” video
I would check out a mini driver.
Fantastic lesson. If only golfers would use their legs!! The pros do, amateurs look like statues concrete legs.
The title stopped them from bringing Mu in for this video - he only needs an 8i to reach 300 yards. :-)
Haha, you guessed it!!😝😂👍
Great video!
@@gilbertamthor5098 Very cool man, Nice to meet you!
I see sav is putting a lot work behind the camera, I'm also working on my driver speed as well, shes my goal!
Shawn what shaft lengths are you and Sav at?
44.5 for Sav and 45.5 for me; but the bug in my ear is that 43.5 has the same speed for my swing…
What is the degree of club Sav is using?
Really good but I still cant swing that forward hip
Wonder how much club head speed you need to carry it 300? 🤔
about 120!
My irons tell me I’m easily over 100mph
My driver is closer to 245-275 because I’m still hitting down and I tend to strike the heel 😒
See our “Driver speed and smash shawn clement golf wrx” video; it will help!
146mph ball speed gives 300yds... doesn't seem right to me. Is that at sea level?
Yes! we have significant tides here in Quebec City!
300 yard carry
How’s she get 300 with146ball speed?
Launch-angle of attack at plus 7 to 10 and spin below 2000 RPM-fully optimized! Wait till you see now! 🚀🚀🚀🚀
is you driver a 9 degree and stiff shaft?
8 degrees and stiff, yes.
Thanks for the great video! PS: I think it’s pronounced “KOO-roh KAH-gay.”

@@golflessons it means Black Shadow in Japanese :)
@@suivzmoi nice! Very Ninja! 😀👍
He nearly said Sav is 125 yards 😄
Go Sav! Gotta root for us lefties
9.5 degrees into out path....surely that is not a sustainable path for an aspiring tour pro? It seems way too much in to out.
Depends on the shot you want to hit! Won’t hit fades with that! 😝😝
No way the old guy has 110mph drive. It looked to me as a 85mph. I think it’s fake
Jeez, wow, I have not heard that in a while! Come on up and see us! Glad to show you I can still carry the ball 290 at age 58 next month! My Daughter is now outdriving though, but she has a good excuse as the #8 in the world of Long Drive with the WLD😝😂

Why can’t these LPGA girls figure out how to hit a driver like this?
Some do. But they are not on a range and are trying to hit target with different shot shapes at times. Hitting a fade 300 yards is harder.
@@paulbull3431 I have seen one woman hit a driver as far as Savvy and she is close to 6 feet tall. Most of those girls are hitting a 220 to 230 carry.
What kind of ball you guys are hitting? Is that a PGA compliant driver head? The numbers just do not make sense at all.
These are Callaway Chrome Soft X balls we have at our range; the top! Also though, you will rarely find numbers like these when you watch the regular guys because our spin rates are lower and launch angles and angles of attack are much more up to the tune of 7 degrees angle of attack and 16 to 18 degrees launch with 2000 RPM spin. VERY POTENT!!
@@golflessons Where are you guys located, is the air thinner there? I thought the higher you hit, the less distance you get. New to golf, trying to carry 300 but just can't find a way to achieve it.
