Rudimental have been working in the last years with real life situations with such a powerful lovely attention! i love their music but even more their interest in communicate something strong and try to wake people's mind up. That's simply amazing and show that they do care about the rest of the world.
Impressive and intense. Loved to see Elderbrook working with them on something like this!!

My interpretation is very similar, it's a men's support group men aren't known to be open and willing to talk emotions, micheal with his brow knit with anxiety n pain awkwardly stands up to share but his share isn't verbal it's his dance n he starts very hesitantly n scared it won't be understood, his face changes when Mr blue jeans stands and by performing the dance with Michael shows he understood and can relate, then as the rest stand up as they build up their confidence n know that they feel the same but aren't as afraid anymore to share all join in, then when they stop and pair up to me it shows that as different n opposite each pair seems to be (age appearances background culture color etc) that we can all find common ground and understanding in each other if we just try n be open with each other, then they finish strong and the group ends but Michael u see is left feeling a bit more hopeful and validated

it perfectly describes how men are conditioned to bottle up their feelings and deal with things like depression and addiction on their own. When each man in the video stands up, the first thing he does is a strong-man pose, which to me is a metaphor for the image most men feel they have to project - strength, confidence, invulnerability - and then, slowly, they start to warm up to lowering their armor to dance, which is a metaphor for sharing their feelings with the other men. Once all of them are dancing, you start to see them become a little more confident and even a couple small smiles on their faces because they realize they're not alone, there is hope, and that things can get better. ~KyleEcoyote

I don't like the association "not crying=being strong" as it is the societal/cultural construct that pushes people to bottle up emotions. Strength is also the ability of tapping into that emotions before they build up to a breaking point.
Empower yourself by embracing the human complex, our flaws and vulnerabilities.

First, and only music video that's ever made me tear up. Every part of this video strikes a chord for me.
0:00 - 0:08 : Reluctance is real. Took me 5 years to finally realize that I needed help, and that "manning up" wasn't going to solve anything. Taking that initial walk through the door is basically an admittance that you're vulnerable, and it takes a lot considering how you're at odds with your pride.
0:18 - 0:30 : No one wants to talk about it - especially those struggling with mental health. It's not exactly something easy to bring up to friends, or family. There's times you feel no one will care, there's times you think no one will relate, there's times you feel you'd be a burden to everyone, there's times you feel that people would look down on you. It's not like you can interject mid-conversation with friends "Oh yeah, I'm depressed, and I dread existence at any capacity." Being someone that has the reputation of trying to make everyone laugh all the time, it feels selfish to jeopardize the influence you have on your friends.
0:50 - 1:00 : "I'm a man, I'm strong"... Dancing is an expressive art. I think the flexing gesture coupled with the dancing says "I'm a man, I'm strong, and that should not hold me back from being expressive, or emotional." Toxic masculinity is garbage, and I think it's the source of a lot of the mental health issues amongst men today. It's instilled into our minds, and I feel like there's an obligation to fight it for the betterment of everyone else.
1:20 - 1:50: There's no feeling like meeting someone going through similar struggles - the first guy to say "you're not alone, man."
1:50 - 3:00: Reluctance again with joining in. Again, It takes a lot out of you to take that first step, but it's easier when you're not the only one. The foundation of any camaraderie is struggle.
3:00 - 3:20 : Fuck this "macho-alpha-masculinity-can't-be-emotional-around-other-dudes-bullshit" mentality man, I just need a damn shoulder to cry on. Gender, sexuality is irrelevant at this point - it's human to human, soul to soul, struggle to struggle. Being able to ditch that stigma feels liberating.
3:20 - 3:50 : Instant change in tone, body language, facial expressions, etc. Sometimes all it takes is reassurance, a spark of support, or a shared moment to help someone push through another day.
3:50 - 4:06 : Going back to our lives like nothing happened.
Edit: So happy to see that this has created a positive effect on many people. Granted, I'm not a scholarly art interpreter or anything - just wanted to share my personal connection to the video, and it's amazing how many people relate!

I can’t tell you how hard this song hit me. When he asks Michael to share with group, he begins. His words are visualized by dance. The rest of the group know the dance moves because they lived the same suffering that Michael has. They dance close together because their life depends on it. I was brought to tears while watching this because it really shows that group therapy works. We’ve been there and so much I is understood between each other that is unspoken. The choreography is absolutely perfect. Top 5 music videos of all time for me.

I totally agree, the first time I watched the video I cried as soon as Michael stood and began to dance, I had to watch it again as soon as it stopped, I then watched it every day for about a month, because I wanted to connect more fully with it, I don't know why? I think the fact that as a gay man I saw how straight men have to bottle up there vulnerability and label it weakness is so unfair, the part where they dance together was so powerful, for me it meant that every man needs human contact and a shoulder to lean/rest on and that doing so isn't weak, it's about humanity. After watching this video I wanted to reach out to every man in my family to say "I know you have pain and I want to offer my shoulder".

I'm a 30 year old male who still struggles with stress, anxiety, and depression and there are times where I feel like I'm worthless and no one cares about me, but I just somehow find a way to keep fighting and stay alive. Music like this has helped me tremendously as well as surrounding myself with family and those with those who really care about me. I just want to thank the makers of this video for putting a smile on my face and giving me hope.

I've watched this countless times and I just now realized all the moves are "steps". Baby steps, first steps, 12 steps, etc. It's only after they've begun these steps they are able to embrace, which, aside from the "strong man" pose at the beginning, is all their arms do. Strength isn't merely lifting/holding up, it's taking steps. Wow.

    • @roidroid
      @roidroid 3 місяці тому +1

      That's a cool insight i hadn't considered.
What i noticed was that there was multiple gaps in the dance, each incentivizing more ppl to join (is this part of traditional line-dancing?). I only just noticed it on this watch.
Yeah the arms are important, i think arm movement is a symbol of aggression/vitality/energy (regardless of gender). Lack of arm movement seems to communicate trepidation or weakness/vulnerability (a normal part of being human - to be embraced not rejected), or at least it sure did to me in the vid. 👍
I read the beginning strong-arm pose as an addressing what is expected of them (with a nod to the possibility that those expectations may be inappropriate & unfair), with a _"Yeah, we absorbed these messages back when we were lil' kids tho"_ energy.
(Honestly, i'm pretty unfamiliar with line-dancing, and just assumed from the vid that it was a traditional part of the start of the dance).

@@roidroid Ya I think the "strong man" pose is doing a lot here. It's pleading, it's admission, it's a mask, it's recognition and understanding, it's true strength. There's three people that really get focused on when they pose that stand out. The first guy shows this sort of mask and/or admission of "I'm trying to be strong, please think I'm strong." The first guy to join has more confidence, he seems to say "I see your mask, I've worn you mask, stepping forward is truly strong." Then there's the guy that stand and flexes with a smile. That's the opposite of the first pose we see, not pitiable but hopeful, not bashful but confident.

What I love most about this video is their facial expressions. The subtle changes in their demeanor as they start to realize that they're not the only ones that feel that way, that they're not alone in their suffering; and the level of confidence that reassurance builds is perfectly conveyed through that. And believe it or not, just watching that actually cleared the stress that I'm currently facing. Bravo to the director, the actors, the artists, and anyone else involved in the project - for putting in the time and effort into making a video that can transcend its message beyond our computer/phone screen.

The simple set, catchy music, angst in the first guy's eyes (especially), then the reluctant "tough" image they are all exhibiting slowly accepting the "reality" (in this case doing the dance). Think its more people battling addiction hence them being at an AA meeting. And the lyrics (There's something bout you, keepin' me sober) these people are fighting addictions and when the video starts they're all depressed and don't want to share. Then when the guy gets up and put his arms up that's symbolises strength and courage. The others seen him doing the dance and were courageous enough to get up and join in. Such a powerful video and lyrics 🖤

@@Mikebornthisway I don't know. I'd say it's about opening up with each other, and letting people through our defenses. Look at the first guy, his moves are slow, small, and he is worried hat he will be judget. The very first move is a show of his muscles. He doesn't expect to be understood, but then someone else stands up, and he gets more comfortable. Then more, and more, and the guy gets happier and even smiles in the middle of the video. In the end, there is that sly embarrassment that men have after they open up to each other. I think the song and the video try to give out two different meanings.

You are doing an amazing job.. I don't know you personally but I know you are trying to do your best... Just keep going on and please don't ever get hurt because of us petty humans... Never resort to drinking and drugs because you are stronger then them and you CAN face them head on... You have been born with a purpose so just look for it.. Once you'll find it nothing will matter to you anymore.. You'll be happy, content and at peace.. Help others and smile more... Even if you have a penny give it in charity... Plant trees and surround yourself with people who will make you mentally stronger...talk to God more often and confine in Him... You will feel most heard when you'll discuss your problems with him, when you'll cry out your burdens in front of Him. He's like an antidepressant... I have found peace in following his ways and not the "do whatever you want" type of ways.... They always made me feel incomplete, off of direction and meaningless... They make me feel purposeless... So you can tell Im talking from experience.... Just breath and relax. Everything will be okay with time❤️

It's not always easy, in fact, it can be bloody difficult and the bravery needed far surpasses the what society sees as traditional male bravery, in my opinion. Going into therapy has nothing to do with weakness and everything to do with being strong enough to face oneself. Those out there shaming people for it are the ones that are often the most defended and scared. Even just to get to the first sessions shows your strength. peace!

A message to all brothers... this video shows something so powerful. As men we have to present as strong and independent, we are not allowed to show we are human and carry pain and hurt. The reality is sometimes its only another man that can understand our pain and we need another bro to connect with, but we fear that connection. This video is so powerful because it breaks that barrier. I was blessed than when my mum died I had a male friend who had also lost his mum that saw a tear in my eye and pulled me aside and joyed me in the pain. It was a profound moment and one I will never forget. If you need help or if you have a friend that you know needs help… fuck the social rules of what is means to be a man. To survive this crazy world we need people to understand us so we are not alone. Never leave a bro alone if you know he needs you. It will change both your lives to be bold and reach out. The modern world is all about the struggle of women and I don’t intent to take away from that, but the pain of life for a male is also real. To all my bro’s listening. You are not alone, and we are all finding it hard. I’m 45 and life has been both a blessing but also a tough and rough ride. It would have been easier if society would make it ok for guys to connection with other guys with out it being a sign of weakness. Reach out if you need and reach out if you know someone else is finding it hard. It may be the most rewarding thing you do. Thanks, Elderbrook for this amazing video and song that encapsulates this. Much respect X

I'm a teacher, a man, a father, a veteran, a child who grew up in a family where males weren't the best role model for me, all the while the women in the family kept the family going and surviving. This video is powerful and I hope all guys suffering many mental issues get the courage to speak, scream, dance and reach out to others to end the suffering.

2 years, 1 month, 20 days, 5 hours, 36 minutes, and 4 seconds sober... as a young adult male combat veteran that kept holding onto alcohol and drugs as a means of self medicating to the point of losing a lot of friends and finding myself in a 12 day coma from motorcycle wreck (just me no one else involved) this song hits home. Many group meetings I sat quiet to the point I finally spoke up on my story and the fact I fell and needed help getting back up. PLUR

I love this video. One man in a group of men finds the courage to show his vulnerability. The rest eventually find their courage and do the same. It makes me emotional. Every. Single. Time.

I like how he struggles to dance well at first, as though he has trouble expressing himself, but as more and more people listen and join, his dancing is more and more confident and articulate. Shows how expressing yourself is hard at first, but with practice and when seeing other people also speak out, it gets easier. I also like the last verse where they're dancing as partners. It's ok to show affection and to be compassionate. It doesn't make you any less of a man to comfort and to be comforted
