Learn to Start an F-16 Fighter

- In this DCS: F-16C Viper video, it’s time to learn the cold and dark startup procedure! This can be a rather long and involved process if you want to do it “by the book”, but you can certainly do a much faster, abbreviated startup if you wish.
This video is recorded from the included startup interactive training lesson.
We got the startup procedure done earlier than we expected (a few small items to still tune), so we have a few more videos to do prior to release.
We plan to release the Early Access version sometime in early Autumn 2019 (Autumn 2019 starts on 23 September).

Matt “press.spacebar.to.continue” Wags
We love you
LOL .. xD
that was a bit annoying. I really enjoy his startup vids for the various planes. I hope any he does in the future don't have "press spacebar to continue" in them
darknet180
How dare .. I hope he keeps saying that ... don’t stop matt !!! We luv you
@@darknet180 Thats because its just a recording of the ingame training mission
I work on these everyday and crazy excited to finally get to pretend I can fly one 😂
Ha, same! Wonder how accurate this is, taking the engine run class soon.
what shop ene here
MFE here… they’re pretty accurate in game.
I have been a crew chief on this acft for many years and I am very impressed with the detail, finally my turn to lead the start up ops!
I've only been playing DCS for 6 months and this is already giving me nostalgic feelings.
(tbh I bought the F-16 2 years ago, but didn't really start playing like I am now since half a year ago.)
2 viper vids in a day? Matt you're spoiling us!
Teasing and Playing with our Emotions...!! Making us all Bi-Polar...!! 💩..😜
So hyped to fly in the bubble in VR. Thanks Wags and team for cranking this project onwards.
Wags, you're a freaking STUD! Your videos and tutorials contain so much information, down to the nitty-gritty. It's what made me subscribe. I've been on DCS for only a few months now and I am addicted! I've been looking for a long while for a GOOD flight sim. Very impressed with the modules - aircraft and terrains. Keep em coming!
Watching these videos is voluntary torture I swear 😂 The hype train just keeps building speed!! Cant wait to put the viper through its paces in an air show demo to see how epic a job the team have done on the flight model! Thank you for more awesome videos Wags 😎👍
That sound!!!!! That jet flying by at the beginning is awesome.
Its also the F-16, right? I am a noob and cant tell
Yep they finally nailed the audios
YESSSS IM SO HYPED, THIS MEANS ITS COMING SOON
yes it should
Read the description.
@@sebast0409 that block of text is in every video. Its pretty close if this is the start up video. Exciting times!!
Last I heard, later this week they will announce the official release date (assuming Friday's newsletter).
@esticazzi Ha..!! 😜
New game idea to tie us over for this beauty..... Have a shot of your favourite tipple every time Wags uses an acronym you don't understand.
Awsome that you upload the full start up tutorial to UA-cam and its nice to see that the tutorial is build up like a youtube tutorial because i need to look up YT Vids anyway to finde into planes... :D
Start up is my favorite part, and will not play a game without beginning at the ramp. I play the other sim too so watching this I was like "affirmative" .
Could you give me your hotas. And keyboard saved file ?
I am hoping that we will see this now on the open beta this Wednesday! Wags did say that the cold start would most likely be the last video released before early access! Super hyped
Hi OneNine, please see video descrition text. Thanks
Love the Viper, it feels like home after all the years playing other Sims. Can start her and fly her with no problems! Most dangerous part - taxiing the darn thing! I wait for the bird to come to near stop before activating NWS. The real plane is not that sensitive (it can’t be?). Hope they fix that. Rudder control/sensitivity is a must fix.
I used to fly the a 10 for 5 months and i thought the same thing when coming back to the viper
Sweet, with this video as well as the early access manual released, now I can start making my own "modified" checklists for time saving reasons, hehe.
Oof, I don't know if I can pass my last year in university now...
You and me both, buddy
If you've been paying attention the rest of your years the last year is pretty easy :) (I have a bachelor's, master's and doctorate). Go for it!
Well I already know I didn't.. I'm universityless as of February 1st
i feel ya bro🤐
I really appreciate all the attention to detail in designing a realistic startup procedure that I will never do other than getting the engine running and taking off from the taxiway like a savage in multiplayer.
THE VIDEO WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR. THANK YOU SIR!
EXTERNALLLLLL. Lol I would love to hear the idle of this thing outside. And I was greatly disappointed in the closing of the canopy prior to start. Can’t wait to get this.
I can hardly wait to try out my new Rift S with this.
it will be amazing like F18, cockpits looks amazing, everything can read.. I have HP REVERB headset
Now we just need a Thrustmaster F-16 throttle and the flight experiences is perfect and the wallet perfectly flat.
Hotas Cougar ;)
I bought the 3rd cougar in my life via ebay. resold the stick. only needed the throttle for this beauty.
I missed the "klack klack" sound😆
I can feel it coming in the air tonight... Viper🎵
I can't wait to explore the jet on my own, if I wish...thanks, Wags.
I am gonna get a note from my doc in 2 days... Don't let me down ED!
0:13 define "little project"
Yes, does that mean we will get 1 (or 2??) of these "little projects" each year? :) Maybe, every December you announce the project to be released next October? One jet project and one prop project? Oh well, I can dream. :)
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a truly amazing jet.
Its October the third, 11:00 GMT, Im sitting here with coffee waiting for being to repeat this guide! Release it already :D
Great video, can't wait to jump into the cockpit. One more thing - if we want to know exactly when the INS alignment is over, the proper option should be set on DED display.
Sounds like I needed a refresher course.
My start up is like
Batt
Jfs start
Align
Turn on the hud
*FULL POWER*
In case you didn't catch it in the DCS forums, F16 Viper is dropping TOMORROW! (Oct 3) On Steam and in the e-Shop. Better pre-order because the price goes up after it drops.
There are so many checks to do after start.
So much fuel used as well!!
“CHAFF FLARE!”
Mobius That one really hit my emotion
LOCK!
Yes! Exactly that! Now I only need ED to implement more spoken callsigns. Like.... Cowboy 1-1
Oh i know i'll have to take longer to to takeoff with this procedure than my Hornet friends. keep it up Wags and hopefully to fly it in an open beta!
Well if they did the full startup procedure as well it would take them just as long :D.. If you minus all the tests that are ran in this video. the viper pretty much starts up and goes. in just a few switch flicks. :D.
INS alignment (when back simulated again in the F18) does take about the same time. I don’t think you are on the ground much longer when doing al this testing and switching in the meantime.
Loving the videos so far!
Two Questions:
1. How do we know if INS is aligned?
2. How do we set Bingo?
You'll find out soon enough.
if you got to the ins page on the ded( little screen above the standby adi) it will flash ready or the align on the hud will flash if its on. bingo is set the same place. 1: hit list 2: press 2 for the bingo menu and just punch in what you want and bam your bingo is set
@@MySuperslayer Thanks!
write ''list 6'' for the INS and ''list 2'' for the bingo on the ICP and change it trough the DED
I haven't got time for this. "HEY crew chief, start my jet and one Coffee, white to go!"
'and try not to fire the 20mm cannon and blow up a couple of other falcons' (Belgium air force ground crew version)
Hi Matt. Nice job. Though I have a comment: what about the Feed knob on the Fuel panel and Air source knob on the A.C. panel? I notice these are at their default position set to Norm, though are not checked in this workflow/tutorial. These are quite essential for correct (and understandig) engine start procedure and to prevent system overheat. I recommend adding these steps to the workflow. I would also review their default position i.e. set to OFF by default. Cheers, Scuby
Imagine fooling around with these buttons in real life, then accidentally ejecting yourself out of cockpit.
LETS GO! Very Nice Wags!
Looking forward to some of your videos on it as well.
@@stevenarandall Thank you! I plan to focus on the F16 when it drops! I am really looking to the HOTAS usability of the F16.
Me: finally starts to figure out dcs.
Start of ninth grade after quarantine
So what did you do during quarantine
Well I learned how to cold start an f-16 and shut it down
I wish I could say the same
Punk Funk Yeah Studios you’ll get it. Just takes time
Tropical Dog I also am broke and can not afford a pc
Awesome, just awesome - I can hardly wait for this! :)
Wags, Pete (Beck) here. Can you do ma a favor and always illuminate the cockpit at the earliest opportunity in the future. I realize that the F-16C is brighter than most but it all helps when one is looking at the output from UA-cam. Many thanks.
Wags is it weird listening to yourself telling you what to do in the game?
He made a comment in some other video on hearing himself directing stuff as JSTAR "hmm that guy sounds familiar"...
We love you Matt ❤️
Looking really good wags!
YESSSSSS!!!!! It's so close I can taste it!!!
"Clear forward, clear aft, ready for start 1." shout out to my fellow 2A3X3Bs!
Haha, awesome! In tech school atm, block 8 (:
f16 guys now are 2A3X3M lol also never had them throw start 1 the manuals now say start 2 always unless its like 140 F
@Cole Lee Aerial Only for a month, lol
@@MySuperslayer just aging myself... 😂🤣
@@boulderco13 lol what you work the block 10s?
Nice work Matt, you must be chuffed to tick a few more chores off the task list!
Oh man this is it boys
Yes, please.
Great video Wags! Really enjoyed it. Press [SPACEBAR] to continue.
I would like to see someone who has ONLY played DCS, get into a Viper and Cold Start it.
Damn this little thing has a lot of button and switches to mess around with good job guys
Wooow that's awesome and good explain... I tell you something you are the first one for me.... Thank you so much.
Imagine doing all this and right when you're ready to take off, your mom yells, "Dinner ready!"...well, guess I'm not eating.
'but mom, I'm about to lake off to bomb Pyongyang and stop WWIII' - Mom : 'I outrank you buddy, you're grounded'
Is that your Jet Fuel Starter Switch, or are you just happy to see me? Can't wait to fly the Viper - thanks wags.
Hey, even the masters of the trade miss an ejection seat armament before takeoff too! Don't feel bad, you can and will do it... :smirk:
You should not arm the seat until at the hold short.
oka oka, just bought it... you convinced me...now when I can fly it?? I mean, crash it hehe. I just wanted to support you guys over ED, I had tons of hrs flying the legacy hornet...keep up the good work!
Hi Matt.
At around 9:50 you did an engine spool up test. You said throttle to 85% but did 75, a bug or intentionally?
The Viper can have my children, my liver, and my soul please. :3
ok.... who's going to tell the wife about this??? This will take a while to learn...... I'm going to set up a patreon account for the sponsoring of flowers for the wife...... :-)
yeaaaa it's coming!!!!
Im really excited to fly with this plane .Thanks a lot :)
Great work Wagz. Stop It! I already have a Hornet, a Tomcat and a Warthog... just stop brother.
As far as I know, one can not be current on more than one fighter jet at the same time... Not in the real world that is.
@@rexblokland7778 Exactly! This is absolutely my concern. In fact Rex, if you flew with me in either of the A/C I mentioned, there is a very good chance that you might conclude that I AM not current... in any of them! Soooo, if Wags and the team stops making such awesome aircraft, I can stop being so un-current in even more airframes. AAAaand, I will add that in my opinion, I think it is selfish for the rest of the world to NOT seem a bit concerned about my particular Uncurrent-ness... Uncurrency...? (lack of proficient skill) [SALUTE]
you have half completed Hornet, anyway...
Im an f16 crew chief and this game is hella accurate
I love the video, but my old brain is already starting to hurt. :-)
I'm stoked.
0:53 damn those jets sound good
Finally ! thx matt !
So you all saw the live stream where Matt had a heart attack on? Also was labeled 2018.
Matt stop confusing us.
@@oppotato5440. Correct, hit Stream when I meant to press Record on OBS.
@@oppotato5440 Maybe...
He had a stroke though.
Lets just say it was a Sneak Peak ;)
Maybe released this Wednesday? Fingers crossed!
Thursday, per Wags' post in the forum. :)
@@rickmasseur2008 Many thanks. I was only a day out
Nice. F16 are supposed to be one of the fastest jets at sea level that is.
I wish the VR had the same resolution quality
Very Cool!
"We got the startup procedure done earlier than we expected (a few small items to still tune), so we have a few more videos to do prior to release."
@4everAlone PT incorrect sir! 4th October.
@4everAlone PT Do you have the source of that?
@@jokerface1404 check the ED forums. The f16
Subtopic in particular
@@crispy1688 Just saw they put the release date on Steam. I'm so excited for tomorrow
Thanks Mate!
Hey Matt wanted to try to reach out here as well FB, i left a comment on the cold start video on FB concerning the EPU sys test. During the test did the crew chief ever pull the ground safety pin? was surprised it even performed the test and passed. As well it would be cool to initially see the EPU gen / EPU pmg lights always initially come on, It seems too perfect world scenario for the lights to not even come on as noted during the video, as the EPU gearbox has to spool up.
Though by all means am very excited to even see the Viper in 2 days, almost unreal especially for VR. Looking forward to seeing it and looking forward to the updates you guys bring us!
I'm ready!
Hey wags, loving the content. When do you think we will get the release date?
MashedPixels they said when the next open beta update comes out
Hi Mashed, we will announce the exact date this week. Thanks
@@MattWagner nice, can't wait for the f-16. It feels like christmas :)
I will have to see if I can use voice attack instead of pressing the space bar, makes life easier in VR.
Two things: 1) is there not a clickable spot to close the canopy and 2) why don’t you follow common airfield protocols and request startup clearance?
It's really hard to see but there is a toggle switch just right under the yellow canopy lock handle. That's where you can move it up and down with out using the keyboard command. Had to look it up to find. I'm not sure why he didn't use that instead.
HI Matt ,super good vidéo yeahhh 😎😎 I asked you if you can put the subtitles of your videos of the F16C when you build them with the subtitles option for all, so to be able to read them other than in English! I’m French ,It is still not possible, can be could you do it at the next video of the F16C that I bought in preorder. Thanks in advance and great your videos again, keenly next on the F16C Blck 50 yeahhhh👍🏻👍🏻
Just curious, if you have been an F-16 pilot or worked on this aircraft, how accurate is the DCS startup procedure to the actual start up procedure for an F-16?
I am not, but we work with several F-16 pilots and use several public documents. The procedure in the game is very accurate. Thanks
@@MattWagner Awesome. I was watching a video of C.W. Lemoine earlier flying the DCS F-16 and just by the way he was naturally going through the startup it seemed pretty close to reality. Keep up the amazing work bud, yall are doing a really great job.
this sounds like memorization not understanding or sim
for what? Is there a campaign?
Og me! Was going to bed for watching rugby on the morning with my quetapins already kicked in, but just HAD to watch this one.... 🤔😄😂
Great!! I want to fly it sooo badd
Ok...!! In the last video about Taxi & Take Off... Wags said the Cold Start is likely the last video b4 the release...!! I feel compelled to Pre-Order Immediately now as the price will likely be back up to $80 when the module actually becomes accessible...!! Phuq...!! 😮..💰..💸..💰..💸 = ✈..🤯..🤗..😇
Hi Matt, in the options/ controls menu, I do NOT have i.e. the F-16C "SIM", I only have the F-16C, same for the UH-1 and the F-18C. I am usin DCS world 2.9. Gameplay option: "Easy Flight" is unticked. Any ideas? Thank you.
Um.... I don't think your supposed to close the canopy before engine start, doing so will use the the air required to start the engine and not render enough air to spool. You would have to recharge the air with the ground crew.
that's not how the start system works. its a gear box starter. the jfs is spooled by a hydraulic start motor and then the jfs spins the engine up through the gearbox with the power takeoff shaft. that's the gist of it. I could walk you through the whole process but it would take me about 5 paragraphs just to get the base components and steps out of the way
Hi Knight, nope, this is correct. Thanks
@@MattWagner thanks for clearing that up
I love this video :)
Awesome!!
Holy moly
How does one know when the INS alignment is complete? Does it show it anywhere?
In the real jet it'll show up on the alignment page on the DED as well as flashing on the HUD
You see it 'rdy' by clicking the LIST button and then #6. This opens the INS page, where you also see the ground speed, useful for taxing.
It should also appear blinking in the HUD. I forget the exact phrase.
The joystick of the F16 is on the right side, not the center between your legs!? I will have to research on this.
Yes, it is a side-stick controller.
Watching video..Vipers fly by....thinks/smiles/gets super hyped....WAGS STOP TEASING US!......lol Almost, Almost, we are close to parking our butts in that cockpit Ladies and Gents.
Oh my god!.. That sounds of passing aircrafts!!!
Ok, start-up checklist completed, release the bird! Hold my beer, don't worry, it's only a sim:-) And a perfect one.
Soon Rex, soooon.
You sound so much like Barry from the Sim racing garage :)
So would this work in an actual f16. Like is this the actual startup pilots use
Is this tutorial part of the game? When I buy F16 DLC will this Voiceover tutorial come with it too?
I am asking this because this isn't just regular UA-camr's tutorial, there is Transcript as well as those signs over buttons.
It does come with the aircraft
