  • Lava Rivers Visible From Reykjavik Airport in New Iceland Eruption
    This otherworldly sight is the result of another volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula. This is the third eruption of the Sundhnúkur volcanic fissure since December.
    This was the view of the eruption from Reykjavik airport. Residents of the nearby town of Grindavík were evacuated in January, and may never be able to return.
    Local authorities are doing their best to prevent damage to key infrastructure, but there is little they can do to stop the flow of lava.
    Scientists say they cannot predict how long this latest eruption will last. Despite the peninsular being dormant for almost a hundred years, subsequent eruptions could now potentially continue for decades.

    First this video needs to get its airports straight. The Reykjavik airport in the capitol city, does not handle big jets. It hosts smaller domestic flights. The airport on the Reykjanes peninsula is the Keflavik International Airport and is 20-30 miles from these eruptions. The first pics I saw of this eruption this morning were on Twitter/ X, from the Keflavik Airport. Telephoto lenses can create confusing images & distances. Any aerial images probably come from the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter flights which are often the first photos of these events. The glow of the eruption & possibly some of the very high fountain eruptions could be seen from the upper levels of the Keflavik Airport building. The area between the airport & the eruptions is relatively flat with not a lot of high hills to block the view until you are in the eruption area itself. A truly amazing sight.

    The video has a a lot of good images of the Reykjanes volcano erupting, but it gets a few points wrong. For one the image of the eruption is misleading because it appears really close to the airport. The image was shot with a zoom lens and makes the eruption appear closer than it really is. In reality the eruption is about 9--10 km or about 6 miles from the airport.
    Also it is not true that geologists don't know how long this eruption will go on. The size of the magma chamber the eruption has originated from has been estimated and in combination with past eruptions this eruption is thought to last about 2 days. After 12 hours it had already significantly declined in lava output like before.
    And lastly, near the end of the video it stated that the penninsula had been dormant for almost 100 years when in actuality it had been dormant for 780 years when the last eruptive activity on the penninsula ended.

    Reykjavík airport is 35 km away from the erruption site and behind few hills, no way for such view. Also 1:25-1:40 this is not from this erruption. Does such a level of misinformation qualify you as a journalist?

    Goodbye Reykjanes peninsula ?

    • @michaeldeierhoi4096
      @michaeldeierhoi4096 7 місяців тому

      No, it's not goodbye. For the people of Grindavik it probably means leaving their area, but beyond that countless past eruptions didn't destroy the peninsula and this one won't either. Though it will disrupt life in the communities depending on how extensive the eruptions become and how long they last.

    Unfortunately, this volcano will not continue for decades, perhaps a few more years, as we enter the Tribulation, it could become the location of the Lake of Fire, or Yellowstone will, the final judgement!

      Based on past history of the Reykjanes Peninsula eruptions from this area and others on the peninsula eruptions have continued for decades on occasion. Not in continuous eruptions, but sporadic eruptions spread over time. Sort of like what has already gone in the last 4 years with 6 eruptions.
