  • I recently purchased the Rikon rk50122 combination belt & disc sander. I thought that perhaps some of you may be in the market for a similar machine and be interested in having a look at this one. While I can't do a "review" on this machine, I can give you my pro vs con initial thoughts on it to perhaps help you make your own decision.

Have a shop around for disc hook & loop adapters. I have two 14" disc sanders at work and used disc cement for YEARS. Buying an adhesive hook disc with the cloth backed sanding discs has changed a 45min-1hr process into a 5-10min one. Much cleaner and students and staff are much happier to get on with the class with a new disc.

Thanks for the video! I've been researching and i think this is the one! One tip for you though, the allen wrench to loosen the swivel to raise and lower the belt, I'd cut the long end of the allen in about half and then super glue it into the cap screw so it works like a thumb screw and won't get lost. I did that on the swivel of my 1/2" x 24 handheld jet sander and it works great!!!!

Good review, ty. If any adhesive doesn’t come off when replacing the disk sandpaper a smidge of goo-off. I use magnets to keep those things handy.

Looks like a good machine Chris . I like the large belt and disc on it. I have just a Harbor Freight one similar but much smaller. A quick story it came with a round disc sandpaper on it. Mine is the sticky kind too..well I checked everything before I turned it on and it looked fine. I turned that thing on and was going to test a piece of wood and the sandpaper that was on the disc came flying off and dang near hit me in the head. I bought some better sticking paper and don’t have that problem anymore. Congrats on your new tool!

That box didn't stand a chance! I'd rather it be heavy personally. Looking forward to an actual review on this. Thanks for showing all the features, appreciate it.

A suggestion or two: When changing the disc sand paper, use a heat gun to warm up the adhesive. This makes it a whole lot easier. I keep a rare earth magnet at the tool to hold the allen wrench. You can make your own adapter with some pvc pipe. Check out Patrick's WorkShop - he has an excellent video about it. Enjoy your new tool! I see that you've already gotten it "dirty"... lol

It looks like you primarily utilize this sander for wood, but can you comment on the construction if used for steel? I have the lower cost Bucktool version, and although much of it is cast iron, the dust cover below the disc sander and the exhaust port are actually plastic and can't handle the hot debris and has started to melt. How do you think this unit would handle metal work? Thanks in advance!

Everybody loves sanding!...lol. Anything that makes that job easier is welcome.
A blast with a heat gun on the PSA sand paper will re soften the glue and then the paper is easier to take off.

Stockroom Supply has a UA-cam channel. They demonstrate adding and use of the graphite sheet add-on to the platen to reduce the friction on the belt.

Better design than mine, for the disc sander get a stick on pad with Velcro on other side, saves anger & allows for more 🍺 time, hindsight tells me separate 20” disc & seperate belt sander are better options but hindsight is never around when first sight needs it , see ya 👍👍👍

Was searching for a review on this sander and came across your channel. Looks like you have a lot of other good videos for a weekend woodworker like me looking for some smaller projects to keep me busy, so I subscribed. Can you tell me how this sander is holding up for you? Was it worth the money?

Chris, did you ever post an actual review of this machine following your unpacking as you discussed you might do? I purchased a cheap Harbor Freight machine and it finally gave up the ghost - and I haven't even used it much. LOL Would be interested in hearing how this machine works/worked for you. Thanks.

I didn't do a review, but I can tell you that it's worked out really well for what I use it for. Good machine in my opinion.

I bought one of those (crappy) sanders. The belt slips.... right out of the box. The disk sander is OK, but the belt sander is crap.

That table on the belt sander is tiny. I know it’s more of a stop than a table but I have seen some sanders with a table there too. Have you had any problems with that?

No I haven't, but I don't need on bigger than that.

So.... my *BIGGEST* beef (and it's a huge one): How do you sand a long 2x4? Say I've got a 4' long board. I can sand 15" of one end, then turn the board and do the other 15". But there's NO way to sand the center portion. With my ancient 6x36" Craftsman, you have access to the whole belt, so you can lay the wood flat on it. With this piece of junk, the plastic dust collection piece (belt rear cover) blocks you from using the belt on the middle of the board. The fact that the longest piece you can sand is 30" is a real drawback -- I wish I'd known that before I purchased.
I'm ready to get the saw and cut that piece out of the way so I can use it as a 6x48" sander.....

Yes why didnt they make the dust port standard right. Annoying!

I have the same machine, bought it new and think it's a cheap made piece of junk. The table for the disk is flimsy alloy and not cast or even steel. The belt won't track and the guards that have to be removed for a belt change are light gauge tin adding to more steps than needed in a belt change. Overall If I was rating a boat anchor or landfill material then it's fine but as a tool it fails.
