Reddot does NOT improve your shooting | 507C with ACSS Vulcan reticle

- Reddots on pistols are not a magical device that will improve your shooting. Even more, most shooters will notice a negative effect right after they mount their first reddot on their handgun.
The biggest issue for new shooters with reddots is finding the dot after draw or even after transitioning from target to target.
Primary Arms made a big leap in this field by collaborating with Holosun and creating a pistol red dot with an innovative ACSS Vulcan reticle. This reticle has a chevron in the middle and a big outside circle that can't be seen if the shooter has the gun properly aligned.
Very interesting concept that works great even for seasoned shooters and practical shooting competitions.

I like the idea of this reticle. Seems like a very good idea to have the big reticle to let you know if youre off.
It really helped me at a competition where i had to shoot with my support hand from cover
Look up the vortex prism drt reticle. That would have been a much better reticle since it's designed for close range shooting.
I like the idea too but was interested by her saying that "all I saw was red" when using the ring. I could imagine that under recoil it is going to be a busier sight picture.

Mansa’s performance was reflective of what Ken Hackathorn mentioned in his video about red dots. I love that you guys keep it real and honest.
@officialpolenartactical. thank you scammer for putting “official” in your username. Now I totally trust you.
she was no clue try it for your self
My assumption is that Manca is shooting with red dot like with irons. So her focus was on the dot (or circle) and not on the target. Ask her if she saw the dot clearly like irons; than there is almost no advantage. With red dots focus should be on the target and the dot should be out of the focus, so just the opposite of the irons. 😊
You guys are awesome! Manca, thank you for the appearance and laugh at the end!
Oh brother 🙄
There's a lot of stuff that I have learned since I started using the dot over a year ago, and almost all of it has made me a better shooter overall. I recently heard a suggestion from a couple instructors that is meant to help train the brain not to focus on the dot, and it's pretty simple but quite effective from my experience. All you do is put something ovet the front window of the dot, in my case it's painters tape, and then go ablut your training as usual. If you are focusing on the dot you will lose the target, and if you are focusing on the target you will keep the dot and the target. It's similar to a rifle technique I heard from Taran Butler a while back, but the goal is a little different here. The goal of focusing on the target is that your brain should do the work if putting the dot where your eyes are looking instead of you focusing on the dot and trying to follow the dot to the target. I think it's worth experimenting with if you haven't before, and it's also nice in the sense that you can bump the dot brightness down a good bit and save some battery during training.
A 'Gunsite' instructor recommended a similar thing with the tape (it does help). Continuous practice is required to master the red dot.
@@gregorypaulbox3035 same can be said for iron sights, they’re not entirely correct in this video
I read Manca's shoots and clicked immediately.
Nice video and good to see more of Manca. I recently took a basic tactical medical course and maybe you can test different kits and scenarios how to get to it and use items on dummies. There are some training only materials too that are cheaper and if you can come up with how to build a single use dummy that bleeds and bundle those training kits, that could sell.
I'm a red dot fan. I've been running them for years now and they are second nature to me. A new shooter bought a pistol and dot and he has the absolute hardest time finding the dot. That Holosun HUGE circle reticle might be what he needs. Good video.
or they just need more practice.
I think an iterative improvement would be to engineer a way to make the outside circle a little dimmer than the dot/chevron.
That sounds like a good idea
Also auto brightness has to measure incomming light from the target instead of the local environment. That way, the dot could have consistent contrast no matter what you're pointing at.
Wish the triangle could be a dot or something else
@@ssjdavid the standard 507c is just a dot
I bought a red dot for my index finger so I know exactly where to point it when I'm showing who doesn't have a red dot. Also, if guys wear makeup then you just opened makeup sales to 100% more customers. Love red dots but at pistol range my irons don't make any difference. You all are hilarious and have great reviews, thanks
I switched to a dot a couple years ago and i think it is night and day difference for me anyways and i put a dot on every single one of my pistols. It is all about getting time behind the gun.
Great review. As I'm aging I've noticed difficulty in focusing on the front sight. I was thinking of going to a red dot. Thanks
Nice video. I would like to see your times after a couple of weeks of dry fire training, with the red dot, followed by a few practice sessions with live ammo.
biggest hurdle is to learn to change your focus point, on the target, not the dot itself, also find the holosun with the smaller circle / dot combo (507C) a great edc optic
I'm a fan for sure.
Love your work! Maybe a collab during Shot Show?
✌️😎🇺🇸🇭🇷🍻
Great video as always. It clearly show how much important is training.
Manca's (and everyone else's silly giggles at the end capped the video perfectly. 😆
Thanks for posting this! I just purchased this optic with this reticle (because my eyes are getting old) and it was very interesting. I've been a sight shooter for a 32 year law enforcement career (now 3 years retired) and I'm curious how I will adapt to this. Thanks again for making this video.
I have said it before, this is the best firearms channel. Go Slovenia! 🇸🇮
The bloopers at the end had me crying!!!!😂🤣😭 Great video. Thanks!
I'm so happy that polenar proposed to manca! She is so pretty and he is so badass!
That’s because she taped a picture of him on a target and told him man up or else 😂🤣😂
I tried out a red dot and it definitely aided in long distance accuracy. I was printing insanely small groups at 25 yards, so I walked over to the rifle range side and was putting shots on paper at about 50 yards. That was nuts, for me ! But, that accuracy came with the time penalty of searching for the red dot. On a handgun for long range target shooting, or hunting, a red dot is absolutely a game changer. But not so much for self defense, IMHO.
The dot is for target focused shooting, not precision target shooting. It allows you to keep eyes on the threat and shoot when dot crosses the threat. If you shoot dot with an eye closed like target shooting it's not correct.
This kind of stuff is so cool. Watch the movie “The Last Starfighter.” Somebody watched the holographic sights in that movie and was like I gotta make this real.
Dimitri: am I a joke to you?
reflex sight were standard on ww2 aircraft though
That big circle is kinda nice. I have trouble finding my dot when presenting since I haven’t spent much time with the dot.
Train more, build the muscle memory. Dont even need to fire a shot, just do presentations over and over
Great vid. I have the ACSS Vulcan on my Delta Tactical and I love it.
"Maybe I'm just a special kind of stupid, you know!" You and me both! 🤣
Used a red dot on a sidearm for the first time in airsoft, I'd practice shooting and was dubious if it would add much....I was pleasantly surprised, I could make quick acquisition shots and precision shots with no effort plus being able to keep both eyes open genuinely helped in follow up shots on other targets....I'm a convert
great and informative video. it was interesting seeing how Manca was faster with a regular sight over the red dot but like she mentioned that it needs training to get faster. Also the laugh at the end was too cute lol i love how much fun the atmosphere is at Polenar tac is.
When Polenar isn't laughing, they're teaching, and sometimes, they do both.
Glad to see ads in your videos again! Congrats on winning your appeal!

Hi.Žiga said he has astigmatism.
Could you please make a video about the differences between green and red dots for people with eyesight problems? I've seen marketing videos that tells that green dots are better if you have bad eyesight but no objective tests yet. Thanks for all your great work.
I have seen various studies about using bright green or red/orange indicators for fishing. While some suggest one over the other for people with bad or deteriorating eyesight, my experience has demonstrated that the contrast between the indicator and the background (target) may vary based on the background color and the lighting conditions (brightness, fluctuation, etc.). If the Polenar Tactical team does a video on red versus green dots, I suggest that they do it under various background and lighting conditions. It would be a good follow up to this video.
Great video! Really informative and helps me figure out red dots.
I found when i first started using a red dot i was slower because i was trying to get that dot right in the perfect spot and not just taking the shot on my first good sight picture. I could see the same thing happening with the big ring like trying to make sure it’s not visible at all before taking the shot.
I did the same thing while shooting with magnification, zoomed in I’m trying to hard to get those rounds touching versus just getting hits. Once i let that go and just started shooting i was getting acceptable hits faster. Maybe that will help?
OUT-TAKES HAD ME ROLLING LIKE A KID !! LOVE THE CHANNEL!
There she is my FAVORITE. I only wish you had her on the program more often. THIS HALF POLISH MAN ENJOYS HER.
I find the advantage of a red dot is it cuts out steps (no lining up sights to acquire picture) and makes things simple for your brain to process. Adding a big circle and even shaping the reticle, in my opinion, takes steps back away from the advantage of simply just putting a clear bright dot on target and pulling the trigger.
While I appreciate there being many options for many people, I agree. But I also don't shoot pistols in competition or for long distance accuracy. A big dot that's easy to find and lets me hit a torso sized target at 25 yrds is what I use.
Great video. She makes a great point; without training, either will not matter. As for having a stigmatism, Holosun makes that optic with a green reticle as well, just for those kinds of issues. It maybe worth a look. Holosun just came out with the EPS in red and green. So this may also be worth a look. But in the end, it is on the shooter to find out which is best for them, as seen in this video. Not all shooters are the same. Again, great video.
The Vulcan reticle is fantastic.
My recommendation: keep making videos! This was an interesting comparison, thanks!
Thanks, will do!
Reason she’s better with irons comes down to training, dots are definitely something to get used to, especially good to know that you need to focus on the target, not the dot, vs front iron sight and not the target
i run a that exact red dot on most of my hand guns. One major problem with them is in the winter time. They fog up easy when i got from out side to inside. So i don't run them on my daily carry. ive tried the fog spray but that stuff wears out. But otherwise i love them. Keep up the great videos.
Yes it does. I was all irons until last year. Shot a friend’s gun in drills side by side and the groups with dot were ridiculously tighter compared with irons and it was faster with dot. At least for me
I found using a red dot the first time a bit of a challenge in it takes a bit to find the dot. The base plate for the revolver only allows a docter type mounting base.
I really like that Desert Night Camo jacket.
I have, one mine is a bit too small these days.
I appreciate your honesty with your performance.
Best blooper reel I've seen in a long time.
I have a astigmatism as well the chevron helps so much. Have a slight blur on the bottom left of the chevron but that's okay.
That circle indicator idea is nifty!
You all kickass, keep up the great work!!!
Thanks! Will do!
For me there is a kind of visual distraction that occurs with dots. I get caught up in trying to correct/perfect my aim and rely less on the muscle memory of consistent footwork, stance and draw. Trigger discipline and posture tend to dictate the group size, but aim and target acquisition determine speed. The result is a tendency to shoot faster (even in the dark) with sights than with a dot. So I get where she’s coming from. I could probably break that habit with a lot of practice, but that would be spending extra dollars to get the same result.
Yea I see the dot wiggle around since it’s much more sensitive then irons and i start to focus on the dot and it slows me down.
@@FishFind3000 that just means you are dot focused and not target focused. Look up a video on occluding red dots and try again.
"Too many mind. No mind"
I would also be curious to know how much time it takes for the average shooter to make ready if they have to turn their sights on too. Like, if you made that part of the run. Unless you just went through a ton of batteries always carrying with your sights ready, seems like the extra step might not be desirable under stress in an emergency.
@@D6251110H A lot of them are shake awake
I never really liked red dots, plus I can't use a red dot effectively due to my astigmatism. I've found out about XS sights (not sponsored) slapped them on my gun and ran it really well compared to my buddies gun with his red dot. A mix of point shooting, dry fires, and larger irons made my handgun shooting absolutely better.
Love the vid, cheers.
In defensive shooting, the instinct is to focus on the threat...not the front sight. Using a "red dot" allows the shooter to focus on the threat, while still being able to see the red dot via peripheral vision.
Funny day at the end! 😂Congrats from Brazil!
Great vid. I have one of these with the ACSS Vulcan reticle and really like it. I live in the edge of the wilderness and have problems at night with raccoons and skunks, and the occasional coyote or bobcat (which likes to eat house cats in our area!). The red dot with a good head light or weapon mounted light is perfect for my needs. As a new red dot user, I do find the large circle to be an aid, especially when needing to track running varmints in the yard at night. Thanks for a well-done video on the subject.
Shooting from dark to light is always a problem with red/green/blue/amber reflex dot sights. Depending on the lighting conditions you won't have a reticle. Depending on the background color, you won't have good contrast. Automatic brightness control doesn't work when shooting from dark to light. It's nicer to not have a red dot but have tritium and fiber sights... because it's nice to ALWAYS have a sight picture in all lighting conditions and target background colors.
questions for you if you would? 1) do you get a different color night sight from the dot color? 2) everyone says get supressor hieght sights? Do the automaticly co- whitness or do you adjust the dot to co- whitness? Just trying to learn, thank you for your comment and hopefully response.
@@robertkwiatkoski1292 suppressor height sights will lower third co-witness, but if the dot is flush mounted low, you might get closer to an absolute co-witness. Some dots lower third co-witness with standard height sights.
I say pistols should have the truglo fiber optic and tritium combo sights so you can 100% have a sight picture in all conditions.
Even my 5X prism scoped AR has canted irons as backup.
Tritium/fiber work great in the dark and with a flashlight. Irons work great with a flashlight. Scopes work well with a spotlight.
Come to think of it, now I just have backup irons and a scope, or tritium/fiber irons, both with a flashlight, no lasers, no red dots.
svaka čast dobri ljudi.
Always enjoy videos with Manca
I was hoping PA would go with an etched reticle option so that you can mitigate light flooding of the reticle when shooting bright targets or in really brightly lit conditions (as well as an adjustable but fixed position). Despite dumping the muzzle on a few runs, nice shooting y'all!
That wouldn't really work because the parallax would be insane. To have an etched reticle, you have to have something between the objective lens and the ocular lens. This is how prism sights work, but the eye box for a prism to fit on a pistol is too small. Hold your thumb in front of you, covering something with it, and move your head left and right, you can easily see the object behind your thumb, but your thumb didn't move. The same thing would be true with an etched reticle.
@@spookyindeed I use the PA SLx 5x36 ACSS etched reticle RCO, fully well understand how it works (I'm used to RCO's like the ACOG and SLx over holo sights, and normally just use open sights/ irons for Pistols just out of applicable experience/ background, but I also have a Vortex UH-1 Holo sight on another rifle, it's alright).
I find the parallax far worse in Holosuns and other Holo-type optics over etched reticles on prism sights and scopes, way more movement in the illum point (or chevron in the case of this vid and sight) to where it's way more difficult to acquire the target efficiently (as we also saw in the video).
That's because the reticle isn't in the focal plane of the objective lens on those optics. Holo sights don't have a focal plane because they are literally just a piece of glass with a laser diode shining on them. You can't really focus the dot to infinity on small pistols sights, so they will have some parallax. If you were to etch the glass, your parallax would be simply the angle between your eye, the glass, and the target.
@@spookyindeed That explains it a little better, thank you. I still think it's viable, just in a different design.
We had Trijicon RMR's added on our PD's Glock's, and I love it. Zeroing was kind of a pain since you have to zero at different distances but once it was zeroed man the quals got easier in my opinion and that was with no training with pistol red dots usage. It definitely is the future for sure for Police and military not only in the US but across the world.
I use both a red dot and a green chevron (Walther and CZ respectively) Agree with everything you say. Practice is the biggest variable. Familiarity and shots (dry or live). Under 12 meters I can't see the point of a red dot. (In a gun fight) 15 to 40 meters (and beyond) the reticle makes a big improvement in grouping shots.
Holy shit, Manca is back. Great video, well done. When are we going to see a Manca video from the last Finnish Brutality?

I’m glad I waited thur the bloopers! 👍🏻 LoL
Aside of the video, the blooper had me laughing so hard !!!! Love Menca!!
A good bit of dry fire practice.....than try the same session in low light. 😎
That will be great content for the next video.
Dear God that last segment had me rolling laughing! Super funny. You earned my sub. Thanks a lot & looking forward to future videos.
Can you please do a video about how to mount RD on handguns and how to find out which base fits individual guns?
For those who have problems acquiring sight picture with red dot on pistol, I can recommend the Holosun SCS if you are shooting glock 17 gen 5 MOS. It co-witness with factory glock sights.
Time spent training with the dot, and using both eyes for better perceptional viewing with multiple targets makes the difference in total performance.
I have vision too - corrected nearsightedness and astigmatism. Optical sights help, but I find iron sights faster for close (combat) shots.
Well done.. very nice video Guys .. Loved it
Seeing your breath indoors... haha I was distracted. Damn it must be cold.
Manca and the giggle bug lol love it
Ziga, stop making Manca crack up so much!!!😂🤣😂🤣
got an arex delta x cuz of your videos and my only complaint is the mag release but I might buy the extended one from your site when it's in stock :)
Yeah the mag release is stiff but loosens up the more you use. Also it unfortunately it gets stiff again after just a few days lol
@chrisgodfrey2846 since then I've been dry reloading and the mag release is fine now
I really, really want this red dot Holoon sight, but I'm currently strapped for cash. I think everyone should 100% buy this optic.
Nice video. Although, I prefer a Glock 17 or 22 with a Trijicon RMR with co-witnessed suppressor sights. The dot helps a lot when you get a little older and your irons are a bit out of focus, but you can still see fine at distance (I use reading glasses for reading).
Just as with irons, with red dot you have to apply principal of good enough sight picture. You dont line up perfectly front and rear for most shots, only for very hard ones. And you dont get the dot perfectly steady in the middle for every shot, for doubles up to 10-15yrds on full open targets just a flash of red on the target is good enough. This way you will not be slower then irons, you will do the same speed but easier aiming and eyesight focus. Also when you go from red dot after a lot of shooting back to irons you will find that you can actually shoot them target-focused and it is what most of top irons shooters do.
I really enjoy your videos and it looks like hard work sometimes. Please keep it coming.
It's nice! Great success!
Sadly, my eyes are bad enough that I always need to close one eye when I shoot.
I've been recreational shooting steel for my shooting practice for years now. Last summer I put red dots on 2 of my pistols and my speed increased dramatically in just a couple days of shooting. IMO a red dot certainly DOES improve your shooting.
When using irons, you focus on the front sights, which cause the rear and target to be blurry. That's how we do it in competition shooting
Got video, but regardless of whether you have a red dot or irons, human eyes only have 1 plane of focus. It you use irons, your front sight is supposed to be in focus, and your target is supposed to be blurry. With dots, the same will apply.
Great video!
I see you didn't make the "pssssh guys" part work :)
shooting handguns with reddots is confusing a lot of people for the first time.
im using a h&ksfp9OR and every time someone will try it on the range the first group is bad. after some shoots it gets better and better.
older shooters love it (after a time), because glasses often can't bring the best picture with the iron sights.
some guys of my local reservisten shooting club now will change from iron to reddot, after shooting my setup.
i watched the mos version of the holoson this year on the german jagd und hund exhibition and could not find problems with my astigmatism ;) .
if you ask me what we need to have...
please build a serviceman 2gun match, rifle and handgun with optics both carried by the shooter and not dumped the rifle into a barrel. and no, it doesn't have to be a "brutality" match, but challenging for the shooting skills with handgun and rifle.
Ooo I love that reticle.
Great video! It's great to see awesome firearms content coming from Europe. Would love to come train with you guys sometime!
The star of the show is back :)
now do follow up video after doing some extensive practice
Manca is like "the dot isn't the only thing Ziga can't find" 🙄
Gotta love the tires.
Yeah, dots aren't magical; there's always a learning curve with new equipment.
Speaking of astigmatism, try a green reticle if you get a chance. A lot of folks find green helps reduce the reticle sprouting ghost images.
I have astigmitism, I am pretty sure, but I have found focusing on my target makes it not starburst as much. That or I am full of crap and I dont have astigmitism lol
3:49 you forgot the "psshhht"
Add suppressor height sights she will probably like it more
higher aim point messed my natural point of aim in a lot of guns , I end up make peep sights and mount on the optic cut instead
Great vid, i totally agree with Manca, i shoot worse with a dot. but I have been shooting pistols for over 50 years. I only have a dot on one pistol, and after a lot of training i can shoot almost as fast with it. but still slower. i love shooting, and a dot just feels slow, now both of my daughters like the dot on their pistols, and my grand daughters are great with both. so, i guess it's what you are comfortable with.
In my opinion, iron sights are better. When carrying in the field, possible dirty can get on the glass. Like rifle Scopes, dirt can collect. Battery may fail, red dot may catch on objects. I have used iron sights for over 40 years now.
My front bead on a shotgun broke off, so I used a zip tie for fix. Red dot brakes, can't remove it easy
I'll never go back to irons . Used irons for 10 years and been using dot only for 7 years . Ending was tits . I was laughing
Getting both of your opiniions is very valuable.
