I am glad that, although this was an awful and traumatising event, you did not blame the bully in question but the owners. Clearly some people in the comments haven’t gotten that message, which is sad to see.
ANY dog can be a threat if not trained properly. It’s not the breed, it’s the owners. Have we all forgotten that all dogs came from WOLVES?
Banning a specific dog breed is not going to solve anything. When it comes to breeds like bullies, they need to be sold to responsible owners.

It's mostly the breed; the pitbull type dogs. Other breeds do occasionally kill, such as Rottweilers, Huskies, even a golden retriever once killed someone. But pits/pit mixes are responsible for the vast majority of dog related fatalities. *They were bred for fighting* and you never know when this instinct will activate, often for no reason.
      Pointers point.
      Retrievers retrieve.
      Collies herd.
Pitbulls fight until the target is dead. It really is that simple.

The data to support that pitbulls, XL bullies and staffies have a very significant predisposition to dog aggression is overwhelming. To pretend otherwise is straight up gaslighting.

    • @brinnd330
      @brinnd330 11 годин тому +25

There are plenty of owners of every breed who are irresponsible yet pits/pit-type dogs still make up the overwhelming majority of dog attacks on humans and other animals. They are the descendants of dogs literally bred to fight bulls, bears, and other dogs. The aggression is genetic and we need to acknowledge this before we can have an honest conversation about BSL

Also can we as humans stop getting pets just because they look cool??? Get an animal because you are rescuing it, want it to love and have the capability to look after it and handle things of if it goes wrong. The fact that the owners in this case didn't even notice their dog was gone shows what kind of owners that dog had.

It always stresses me out when my neice and nephews or younger brother want to walk the dogs with me because ik that there are many dangers like stray dogs or dogs that have not been accounted for at home because theyre just left outside and not cared for. Dog owners in our neighborhood know to cary a weapon with them in case their dog is threatened. We live in Texas. Ppl who dont own dogs walk around with sticks jic they encounter a vicious dog. This is such a horrible situation. Im really sorry that happened to your sister. Losing a family pet, especially in a family that really cares for their pets is so horrific. My heart goes out to you, your sister and her family. I think no matter the dog, there will always be people who just buy pets and do not care for them. The thing about bully breeds is that they need EXTENSIVE training (and retraining), but people largely get them to be attack dogs (NOT guard dogs, but attack dogs), and yeah to fight them (which is abusive enough). I've met XL bullies who think not getting a treat is the worst thing to happen to them, while I've met other XL bullies who have killed smaller dogs for no reason. That bully deserved better owners and Ella deserved to be able to go on a walk and not die.

Something that these backyard breeders don't understand is how genes are supposed to go together and how to safely breed animals. My family works with horses and it's well known in our area that if you cross the wrong breeds of horse that poor foal will be born with all sorts of mental wires crossed and will be a danger to themselves and others around them. The same is true for dogs.
The owner of the bully is responsible for their dog, but I feel the breeders are just as responsible for their reckless crossing and lack of training or ethics.
I'm so so sorry your family has been affected by this issue, but I appreciate your nuanced take on the situation. I have a rescue bully cross that is in between a normal staffie and an XL, but because he looks similar to an XL he has to be muzzled in public due to the ban in the UK and it's not fair on him.

It's not just a vanity thing - lots of people get them as a weapon/intimidation tactic.

I feel like dogs should be a regulated thing in general. I feel like their training should be regulated and there should be some body that makes sure that dogs are trained correctly. ESPECIALLY when it comes to bigger, more muscular breeds. Too many dogs don't get trained properly and/or have shitty owners. The fact that people can just get a dog and that's that is so strange.

I dont know for england but in germany it actually is. Depending where you live you need to pass a test to even own a dog (written test plus test with the dog)and if you have a dangerous breed like a bully it absolutely is required to do even more than that. Obviously people probably still lie and what not. So honestly i do agree with you that this (the second part anyway) should be a thing for the whole world. Its not just the big dangerous dogs that can be mistrained and dangerous, but especially then you have a responsibility to that dog and to other people/dogs. The dog which escaped was definitelly not living a happy life either and most likely had to be put down. It could have gone for the kids too, this behaviour isnt "normal" its also bred into them which is in itself sad. Why even breed dogs like this, dogs that arent protecting sheep from wolves or whatever thing that they might need this strength for.

Unfortunately, the issue is enforcing this. I lived in an area with a three-strike rule when my maltese was killed by the same kind of dog. This dog WOULD'VE been on strike five, but nobody wanted to report her and get them in trouble. They trained their dog as a guard dog and had moved from a large estate to a small condominium. It was not a proper home for her. And my grandmother was traumatized horribly from this. She kept petting her lap where Buddy used to sit. There were already two bites in our building alone, this dog should've been properly reported. It's unfortunately not a situation to consider the feelings of her owner, as he was incapable of properly caring for her and protecting the safety of others. The leash burned his hand and he let go. She ran up the stairs and he didn't follow. He trained her to attack and failed to keep her in an appropriate environment.
(avoid these parentheses to avoid detail. She was picked up by her ribcage and slammed into a wall. Died 24 hours later because the emergency vet failed to check for brain damage.)

This happned to my grandmother some 30 odd years ago when wolfdogs where just starting to become popular. She was walking two small, trained and well behaved Terrier/pecanis mixed 1 year old pups along with an infant me in a sling. The wolfdog belonged to someone in the area that kept it in a 6x6 foot metal dog kennel all the time (for refrance, I part time kept my old Shiba Inu in a 10x10 kennel and that was to small for a small dog), somehow it got loose and found my Gmama. She said it took one of the pups in it mouth and ran off with it, ripping the leash from her hand. When animal control got there, they found little pieces of this terrier pup everywhere. It could have very easily have killed me (I wasn't much bigger then the dog it toke) or my Gmama. People want these cool looking dogs and don't think about what goes into the care and training. They don't think about the consequences.

They are called pit bulls here in the US. People and animals are constantly being attacked or killed by them. My ex's father was attacked by one just walking up to his house. My mom's friend had a wheelchair bound father that a pitbull actually killed and started eating! That all started with the pitbull attacking his little dog. There was also recently a conviction of someone who didn't keep her pitbulls in her yard in my town, as her two dogs got out and killed a lady.

If cruelty to animals came with jail time, and an owner’s animal’s cruelty to other animals applied to the owner (not the animal), then I think that’d be the actual solution here. No bans needed. People who aren’t able to handle or are uncertain about their ability to handle a certain breed simply won’t get them. Why risk jail time? No more banning breeds. Sure some breeds will probably die out….but who actually cares? Like, 50 people tops? If we’re breeding dogs as companion animals (as we almost always have…) then the genetically aggressive breeds will naturally die out from that alone. And, imho, thats actually a good thing. Friendly animals that don’t want blood genetically is actually a good thing. Otherwise, keep it in a secure enclosure. Like a zoo or something.

The massive amount of inbreeding and horrific, unethical treatment of those dogs needs to be addressed too. I’m so sorry and extend my deepest condolences to your sister and her family. A lot of these bans don’t address the root behaviour and target the dogs instead of the owners. We need a better solution. My parents rescued a reactive dog in 2019 and did so because we knew we had the resources, time, skill, and willingness to look after our boy and all the challenges that arose in the first year. I wish there was a program like for having foster kids - your home gets checked out to make sure you have suitable provisions, you’re properly trained and educated, you have a background check, and regular check-ins, especially for dogs over a certain height/weight (I think that’s more fair than going by breed).

That is such a traumatising and infuriating thing to go through, and I hope your sister recovers quickly and never has to run into that dog again. Last year my dad had to run to help a neighbour, his 2 kids, and their dog because they were getting attacked by a pit bull that’s often left out in the front yard (dog thankfully lived). I was also chased by a lab my neighbours left unsupervised in the front yard while walking my dog as a kid. A lot of people defend letting especially smaller/‘sweeter’ dogs off leash because there’s “no harm”, entirely overlooking the predatory wildlife and cars, let alone other dogs/people.

In my area, it's illegal to have a dog outside off the leash when they're not in a backyard. Before this law, though, my grandparents would let their boston terrier outside off leash to go to the bathroom. For no more than a few minutes, never unsupervised, and she somehow trained herself to never leave the yard unless she saw a bunny (she loved hunting for bunnies, and there were always lots of them because my grandma loved gardening). The neighbors, on the other hand, let their dog run wild and openly, with no leash, and no supervision. Even after the law went into effect, this dog was out and about. She was even smaller than my grandparent's boston. My grandparents put up a leash outside for their dog for that law.

Having fashionable dog breeds is responsible for so many issues. Huskies at the moment are becoming very fashionable, but people give them up when they realise how much work they are, and how much exercise they need. I'm seeing huskies everywhere in England at the moment, more than I ever have before. Dogs are not furniture or clothes, people need to stop getting dogs because they think they make them look hard, or because it's trendy right now. I really think they need to bring back dog licences. My dad said that when he was a child in the 60's/ 70's, anyone who had a dog legally had to be properly licenced. That was for any dog breed. It might just stop some of these people from getting pets they can't properly look after, and stopping some is better than stopping none.

Hiya, First of all poor doggie... and poor child had to witness such a horrible attack.... Secondly I work for the civil service in the UK actually in the department responsible for the XL Bully ban here. And Honestly I think its making the situation worse. I cant remember the details exactly, but something like breeding them is "illegal" as is selling them but also still very unregulated and undocumented. They are offering £100 per dog, to be registered, neutered, and then yes euthanized!! You can keep the dog but it must be neutered and wear the mask and i dont think you get the money. And this creates an obvious heinous loop hole. You can print money by breeding dangerous dogs, you just need to have two dogs you dont neuter. Keep many litters of dogs to register, even still sell them under the counter people. The people breeding XL bullies are not exactly the best and honest people are they... "Funny" this is was, the British empire delt with the same problem in India, we didn't like snakes when we went over there and offered the locals like a £1 bounty per snake head, so you just got mass farms breeding the dam things. Then when the government cottoned on they just removed the bounty and the snake farmers just released the snakes.... We have obvious short sighted legislation from the conservative government only too eager to look like they are "tough" on something... and right I hate these dogs, they are ugly brutish things we bred to fight eachother. I dont know the humane way to deal with them but if we are going to kill the things can we not reward the people breeding them??????? Kinda y'know... incentivises them to keep breeding them?? Sorry it annoyed the fuck out of me and tried as hard I could to delay the guidance coming out because i just see it as so inhumane and not even solving the problem. Like many tory solutions.
Sorry for ranting but the XL Bully stuff just really pisses me off because the dogs shouldn't exist in the first place, something needs to be done but but what is vastly ineffective.
I hope you and everyone involved process and recover from this as quickly as you can.

With your sis' dog there was also the long term concern of unintentional lashing out and they were right, even if she was able to heal with those injuries they were unlikely to be correctable.
Hope the processing of the ex-bully (not mistyped) and its owner are handled correctly. The county I live in has some of the strongest dog protection laws in the country and still wouldn't tolerate continued ownership by that owner due to negligence.

I got bit by one through my calf and ankle while I was protecting my shih Tzu that it was trying to k**l. It would have kept biting me but it got my shoe and ran off ( sometimes they'll do that like a prize ) then I screamed down a vehicle while it was biting me . Which also may be why it ran off. But this was yet another owner that didn't keep their pet secured. I even found the same dog wandering the neighborhood during school let out hours and followed it around in my car until animal control got him. He was quarantined and given back to the owner. Which I didn't want him put down. I wanted the people fined through the roof. I've had PTSD walking my animals ever since

As someone with a rottweiler, my dad and I worked HARD and LONG to desensitize my dog. The only time she gets "violent" is with me and my dad. And that isn't even her being aggressive. It's called the rottie rumble. They growl when they are enjoying themselves. Every new person she meets, she just wants love and attention. Rottweilers have a history of being "aggressive" dogs. It really is all about the training and the capabilities of the owners. If you can't handle the dog or the upkeep, then you shouldn't have a dog period. Dogs are living beings just like us and deserve the respect we ourselves would want.

In the states people voted to potentially save money on taxes instead of allowing women access to life saving medical treatment or LGBTQ+ rights.
Selfishness is something that is plaguing societies and it's a disgusting side of humanity we unfortunately have to deal with.

So many people get dogs without realizing just how much work is needed to train and care for a dog properly. Dogs are not an easy pet! And training is absolutely _necessary_ for the happiness and safety of your dog, and everyone around your dog. There's no reason a properly trained and socialized dog should ever be a threat, even when left unsupervised. This is absolutely the fault of the owner, and if this breed tends to be dangerous if not cared for properly it may be the best option to just ban it, because people will never stop buying animals because they think they're cool, and then neglecting them. This makes me especially sad since pit bulls can be some of the most loving, intelligent, gentle dogs when they're trained and cared for, and their violent reputation is thanks to the irresponsibility and cruelty of humans. I'm guessing the xl bully is very much the same, and just needs proper care to be a friendly, safe dog.

It always makes me so sad to hear stories like this. My heart hurts for your sister and her family and the trauma that she and her babies are suffering from now. I wish all the best for them. I hurt for the dogs, both Ella and the XL bully that clearly was not properly trained and was neglected by their owner (because not properly training IS NEGLECT).
Here in the US when there is a dog attack like that the dog is often put down. The owners are sometimes fined and it's grounds for a lawsuit. My husband and I considered getting a service dog for my anxiety disorder for a few years, but eventually decided to get a cat as an emotional support animal instead because I lack the emotional energy to give a dog the attention and training it needs even as a pet, let alone a service animal. (We now have two cats we adopted from a shelter and I adore them.) I wish people would actually be responsible and recognize that animals are not toys. When you get a pet you are making the same commitments you do when you have a child: you commit to feeding, caring for, and teaching the animal (or child) what they need to live well and happily.

Dogs learn tricks and to poo outside. If all dog breeds came with a default k*ll setting, all dog breeds would banned. But no, it's usually just pit bulls. Of course, a grown married woman who is so low IQ she thinks all dog breeds are born child maulers would need an emotional support animal. Grow up, pit hag.

Growing up, one of the houses down the street had a couple pits or bullies _completely_ untrained with aggressive tendencies. The owners were less than reputable. Police were called for drg related things
They'd get out of the backyard on occasion and terrorize the neighborhood. One attacked another person's dog on our intersection. Another time, i (a small child) got chased from the mailbox back to my house
Pits (and derivatives) with attitudes are completely the owners' fault imo
Either through neglect, lack of training, or reinforcement/allowance of that behavior

I'd hate to mistreat a dog just because i want it, so I've just never even looked into one. Can't afford it either, but that's besides the point.
I'm really sorry to hear about Ella, though. I've never lost a dog in this way myself, but from losing them to old age alone...I can only imagine how rough and traumatic that was for your sister and her kids to have to go through, and for you to hear about as well. So sorry this happened, thoughts with all your family, RIP Ella. If you can’t give your pet all the required training and care it needs then you shouldn’t get one. I love animals but right now I am too busy with work and don’t have the space to have any.

I am so sorry for your sister, her family, and Ella. I spent a decade working at a dog grooming / boarding place. I saw many bullies during my time there, and absolutely none of them were trained. The owners of bullies do it for vanity, and can't be bothered to train them.

I am so sorry this happened to your sister. I own a 80lb pitbull, and he is the sweetest thing, and when raised right (training and loved properly) they are the most amazing family pets. Those owners are 100% at fault. My dog has gotten out a couple times (they are fast) but again, my dog has never known anger/brutality, and isn't a danger to anyone. It's not the breed, it's the humans that are at fault

This is awful! I cant say enough how sorry I am for everyone involved! This was a member of the family that just got taken away and it sickens me these young ladies had to whiteness this! Being an owner of a similar dog that was brought up with kittens and little ones I totally get what you are saying and something (I dont know what) has to be done to protect both the animals that are or are going to be taken from this Earth! I know mine would have went after the aggressor and protected the little one but like you said its all in the training and that lays on the owner! This owner should be charged for multiple crimes! This is a nightmare and I'm sorry you are all in it but I am glad the young ones didnt get hurt! You are all in my thoughts and thank you for sharing, I know this couldnt have been easy, once again I am so sorry!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss and the incident that happened. I 100% agree that dogs need to be owned by someone who can train and properly take care of them.

No more of these dogs should be bred, they’re basically just weapons. Im so sorry this happened, that your family had to go through all this - really heartbreaking. Anger’s OK to feel in a situation like this. You’re not less of a person for feeling angry over it
