England Dan Seals and John Ford Coley. In late 1967 (age 11), a friend and I were putting together our first kid band. We rode with my brother up to what they still called sockhops, hoping to get some ideas from the band. It turned out to be them. I heard this song some months later, and remembered the strange band name. I didn't know for a few decades that it was Seals and Coley. I still love the song.
My dad got me a record player for my sixth birthday - this was the 45 that he bought to go along with it - such a unique rhythm, never heard another beat like the Hammond organ on this song
I remember this song so very well. In Boston, it received a lot of airplay on WMEX, also WRKO. Also, serving the cities of Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill and adjacent communities, WLLH gave this a lot of airplay. In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the record sold better as a result.
i had just bought a new marantz 350 amp, speakers by phillips and a gerard turn table, this song came on the fm and blsated the hell out of this song,a long long sweet time in my life during the early seventies,
If you look closely it is produced by Bob Cardenas and Jim Rowley of WFAA-TV 8 ABC in Dallas Fort Worth for The Sump'n Else Show. Both Bob Cardenas and Jim Rowley are of WFAA-TV. Sump'n Else was one of the most watched music broadcasts in the market.
Dan seals the psychedelic Rock and roll singer, would become England Dan, on the suggestion of his brother, Seals, of Seals and Crofts.. Later he would be Dan Seals the country singer, His biggest hit would be Bop with me baby, But I love old yellow car.. I looked for this song for years, no idea who did it... It blew my mind when I found out the singer of south west fob, England Dan, and Dan Seals were the same person.. With John Ford Colley, South west f.o.b. continued.....
I have to say that I prefer this version too. I'm a huge fan of TWCPAEB. The Vox Continental hook throughout is captivating & the vocal harmonies are sublime.
The WCPAEB version is far superior to the S FOB cover. It has a far more deep psychedelic vibe about it than this cover version. Everything about the original is superior to this...The instrumentation, the playing, the vocal, the arrangement.....All far better than this! It's not even close.
@@josephcassano7578 Hahaha! Wow..thanks for the reply. I just found that "Feelin; Groovy"/ "Beggar Man" 45 a few months ago! I'd had a copy that I lost in a move back in the 90's, only took me 20+ years to replace it. Cheers!

This was in Mesquite, Texas USA.
Cool story!
Thank you so much for sharing that. RIP Dan Seals
This is one hell of a tune.....should have been a huge hit! I never tire of hearing it.

John Ford Coley, AKA Lassie, is still playing Keys and performing superbly!
I saw them perform this during a sock hop at the Twilight Time Skating Rink in Dallas, Tx. Dan Seals and John (Ford Coley) lived in that area of town.
I saw them at Twilight too. Great group
I first saw them play at Twilight Time, although i met them they'd my older brother and side before. John is still performing and superb!
Dan Seals played vocals and sax while John Ford Coley played on keyboards. This song was a #56 hit in October of 1968 on the Billboard pop chart!
I think it charted higher in Dayton and Cincinnat, because I heard it a lot in that time period.

Thanks for the info! I was seeing them play in Dallas and they were superb, live, as well!

My understanding is that it is Dan Seals on main vocal, and John Colley on high harmony. Written by Bob Markley and Ron Morgan. Great tune!
"You damn kids! Smoking that marijuana in the basement again! Wait 'till your Dad gets home!"
Man, I haven't heard this in many years, what a great tune. I'm going to light a stick and a bowl and listen to this about a hundred times!
Glad folks are still celebrating thee herb,,,,,legalize it already in Jersey, was spoiled lived in Portland Oregon for 3 legal years,,,,
WHERE'S MY BONG.....I WANT MY BONG!
I just found this in my old stash. GPC rcords "Green skies" b side.
Great cover of a West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band song...on Stax's hippie label no less!
Reminiscent of Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow." I like this better.

England Dan Seals on that. I've got a copy of the vinyl. Bud Bouchardt of Dallas produced it!
GROOVY, HIP , HEAVY AND F-A-A-R-R OUT, MAN.
Out a sight!!!!!
According to Wesley Hyatt author of "The Billboard Book of #1 Adult contemporary hits" John Ford Coley was also a member of the group.
"The Everpresent Fullness" name-dropped in the lyric was a band in LA in the mid-60's.
"Doin' A Number" - hell yeah...
Superb!
another single we found on the racks for 49 cents. if it was strange we wanted it.
perfect for the times
Never realized this was Dan Seals it’s pretty cool. Garage band , not country😊🎵
There's one thing I didn't like about this song..it's too short!! 🎼🎵🎵🎵📻📻📻🎧🎧🎧🎹🎸🎶🎙🎤
"Groovy..."
The fuzz guitar tone in the breaks after the chorus don't wear well, but
overall, this song is great. Vocal harmonies are good!
Decent enough version but not a patch on the utterly sublime original by West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band.
Same here. This is a nice cover. WCPAEB version has a great groove to it that ventures out into a cool jam.
showlogicprod no doubt!
I like this better than the original. That hardly ever happens.

1968 when psychedelia was the happening thing. Anything to get people's mind off Vietnam and politics back then. Music sufficed quite well.
For my lady (Kathy) -- so long ago.

Yes BOTH England Dan AND John Ford Coley
Robin Hood Brians studio in Tyler, Tx.
Is Dan Seals singing? "..Summer breeeze..."
First released on GPC Records. Which is super hard to find.
I prefer the West Coast Pop Art version, but the guitar breaks are good.
But the WCPAEB version never charted.
Been looking for the song "Beggar Man" by these guys...anyone?
ua-cam.com/video/uP1FJ53bwqA/v-deo.html at 10:07...apologies I didn't get here sooner!

Damn this sucks compared to the original
Original never charted
