- What!? You skipped Angkor Wat!? Yep. True story. I wanted an Angkor Wat alternative.
But why?
Ehh, I traveled in Cambodia for culture. Going to a temple that is highly publicized, overpriced, and full of tourists is NOT my idea of an authentic experience. I have seen the photos of the morning sunrise - foreigners are waiting in line like sheep🐑 and it is extremely crowded.
If people want to go and visit Angkor Wat - awesome! More power to you 💪🏽! But, it wasn't for me. I could see pieces of it from the street. And, I could find enough footage on UA-cam and Google to satisfy my curiosity.
I chose to spend my day traveling with locals. Remember, I travel for culture. 50% of my enjoyment from this day was experiencing the destinations, such as the food, Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre (BBC), the Silk Village, and the floating village. The other 50% of my enjoyment was from spending time with locals.
I am so interested in local people, culture, and customs. I watch how they interact with each other as well as me. What they say...what they think...how they make decisions...what type of food they choose...this stuff is super interesting to me!
Traveling with your friends to these places is fun. Traveling to these places with LOCALS by your side is fun on a whole new level! 😇
There something about Cambodia that keeps bringing me back there, I mean most people that is used to living life in the first world country would never go to such a place, I've been in and out of Cambodia every few years and I believe I like the culture and way of life (lifestyle) the way they do things so differently from here like not following road rules and opening up shops without permits, it's just those little things that give me a sense of freedom every time I visit there, also I am Cambodian.
That Cambodian noodle called "rice noodle". The noodle was made out of rice and those green stuff are the fish meats.
You're just up for anything aren't ya? lol. Been enjoying your travels man ;)
- Many thanks 😇
Yeah - pretty much! I hang out with anyone and of all ages. If a local is curious/kind enough to invite me somewhere - I'm ready to accept 💪🏽
@@Edgesofearth Thats the right way of travel and learn :)
That noodle it made of rice
It called the rice noodles
And the yellow stuff they called k'reang
It a Cambodia spices
I think get in contact with the local and learn about the culture and different thing that u dont normally find back home like brown sugar, silk farm, khmer noodle... are totally worth it. I would chose this sorta adventure. And hey careful with dog in Asia country. They usully dont get vacined.
I’m going to Cambodia next year can’t wait
- Have fun!!
Sar Kim come on ... welcome 🙏 🇰🇭😍to Cambodia we’re waiting for u
Just call me Kimsar sar Kim is not my name
Sar Kim well how would we know what’s your real name ? Besides having that as your name on the UA-cam account.. lol 😂
It's all touristic still... And skipping Angkor Wat is not wise at all
That was exciting, thanks fo sharing with us. 😎🙏
In another universe a crocodile is eating you and say "it's not bad"
Thanks for your interesting video. May I ask how did you find a local friend to guide you around? When I visited China in 2010 I had Chinese friends who took me around. It would have been difficult without them.
I live in Louisiana and have eaten alligator. It's like cooked rubber.
- hahaha, yes, it was like eating tire 😆
I usually use couchsurfing. I found a person on couch surfing who was in a different country who called his friend and I stayed at his friends house and then a friend of a friend invited me to go somewhere. crazy how it all worked out lol
@@Edgesofearth Wow. Thanks. Orkun.
I'm Khmer and have traveled the world extensively. Really enjoying your videos and travel style. I love learning languages, culture, food, and music. I always skip the herds of people for more authentic experiences. Kudos to you! Later when you reminisce, it's the people, the locals, and the off beat experiences you'll cherish. Rarely, do you see on UA-cam the road less travel. It's mostly all for show / crapagram, just another photo snapshot for bragging rights. Keep on keeping on, maybe we'll meet on the road one day.
- Many thanks! Yeah, I have a small following because I don't do all of the tourist things.
But, that's OK. This method of travel is 100 better! The authentic experiences are what I live for! :)
Thanks for the kind comment!
Edges Of Earth FYI that noodle dish you were eating is an old throw back classic Khmer dish. It was very popular during French colonization. It's made with fish that's been shredded and mix with krueng (national seasoning catch all curry like paste made of pounded galangal lemongrass garlic chillies) in coconut milk. Brings me back.
- Haha, it was terrible. I couldn't finish it all! I tried to eat it only to give respect lol.
I’m dead when he said sugar farm 😂😂😂
- 😆😅
This might be my most fav vlog of yours in Cambodia!
this is really cool to see how they actually make sugar out of palm seeds.
😍😍😍😍😍😍🇰🇭🇰🇭
Thnaot : a palm tree that gives fruits, brown sugar... and alcohol.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💕🇰🇭
Thank you so much for this. I don't ever expect to be able to visit the wonderful places you have but you make it feel like the viewer is right there beside you.
- Hey cool, thanks! Glad to hear.
My upcoming series will have a stronger feeling of this. I have changed my style a bit...should be cool 😇😇😆
Your spoken English is very unusual. A shame that you don’t like temples.
- Yeah, I have traveled around and with people who know English as a second language for so long. I have learned to speak in a way that they will immediately understand the meaning. You should also hear me when the camera is off. I mimic their level of English, not to be rude, but for them to understand me easily.
Sometimes I continue speaking this way when the camera is on..lol
I miss Cambodia 😩! Thanks for the awesome video
- Cambodia was is an interesting place. I wish time didn't run out and I could explore more. 1 month wasn't near enough! 😇
Next time (if I ever return), I think I will explore the North.
Yeah I come from Cambodia and I love sugar cane drink is yummy
- :)
Worthy of your one day because those two girls took you to good places beside Angkor Wat Temple. Best of luck from 🇰🇭
And now I’m in Australia 😩😢😢😢
- There MUST be some cool places you can visit in Australia 💪🏽😇
And that road was my friends house 😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
*Angkor wat is beautiful I hope you happy*
Imagine this ..Your taking a dump off the floating village boat and your next door neighbor just pops out the water with your poop on his head.... asking you for a cup of sugar.🤕😆😂😂😂
Interesting travels! For future reference and for others coming to Cambodia, it IS possible to go directly from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh, either by boat or by arranging to join the Can Tho-PP bus en route. (It skirts Chau Doc but definitely possible. If it's too hard to arrange a pick-up point, alternatively you could get a local bus to Can Tho and just get on the PP bus at its start OR to Long Xuyen and pick up the bus at their food stop. Any way, it's shorter than going all the way to HCMC.)
- Interesting. I spoke with locals, they called the bus company and they said no. They said HCMC to PP only :/
I make the trip by bus frequently and have for several years. To do the bus, you'd likely have to contact the office in Can Tho or PP to arrange, and you'd need a Vietnamese speaker to help you. The speedboat makes a nice trip, too. It's a bit more expensive but faster and definitely worth doing once if you get back this way. (You can book the speedboat online on several sites.)
And for anyone who might need the bus info, here it is.
Can Tho
107 Tran Hung Dao - Q. NK
- 38C Nguyen Van Linh, P. HungLoi,
Q. Ninh Kiey - TP. Can Tho
Tel : 84 918 262 053
84 710 3832 203
Phnom Penh
Bus Express & Travel (Cambodia) Co. Ltd
#09 DEo, Street 230, Phsar Deumkor Commune
Tuoi Kork District, Phnom Penh
Tel : 00 855 972 119 339 - 099 790 443
The bus trip takes 7-8 hours from Can Tho (probably 5 from Chau Doc) costs 300k dong (on the Viet side) and $15 from the Khmer side. The ticket includes a meal and a bottle of water but the meal is always in Long Xuyen.
- Wicked info. Thanks! 😇😇
Welcome to Cambodia 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Really nice video!!Please check out my new cover of "this is me" from the greatest showman. Let me know if you liked it. Keep it up!
Great video. Looks like you enjoyed your time in Cambodia. I grew up in Phnom Penh in the 80s. The country has changed a lot, it has enjoyed ~40 years of peace and stability. Next time you are in Cambodia, ask me if you have any questions. Hehe, you probably know more places than me by now.
- Totally. Many thanks! 😇
where you live now ?
Great I am planning to live in Cambodia for a month.
Your video is really helpful ~~~
How long did you stay in 🇰🇭 ?
- Cool. Good to hear. Glad I could help!
I stayed for 28 days..
Where are you now, mean that are you in cambodia now?
- I am currently in the USA...
It's not visky it's gasoline 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
- 😆😂
It's test like caramel the sugarpum
Was literally thinking only today that I’ve been seeing lots of butterflies and moths but not seen one cacoon or whatever it is you call it…then bam, you see about 500 of them haha. We did Angkor Wat for sunrise and it was dire! 4.30am we were up and the clouds just killed it - that and the 5000 other rude people haha
- I'm with ya. THAT is the exact experience that I didn't want to have. 'Overcrowded mass-tourism' 🤮 lol.
Strange. While your luck is still strong - start thinking about winning the lottery. Maybe it will also manifest like the cocoons 😂 🦋
Thank for showing about my country ❤️
- 😇😇😇🤗
I can show place that good for go
You were right, maybe.
I miss my province sooooooo much
- I hope you can make it back there and explore! 😇🌏
2 cute lady travail with you so cool 😘
I'm from khmer and my friends meet you!
- Yeah? Where?
Can you video things you eat make it more interesting.
- Yeah, some videos I do, some, I don't. I will try 💪🏽
Those are so cool! Glad that you learned about some of the Khmer textiles!😍👏🏻
- definitely interesting to learn!
Edges Of Earth yeah,totally!
how much did you pay for the private tour for that day?
- Nothing. A friend introduced us and they wanted to take me. I paid for everything. They gave me their time. Honest exchange. Such an authentic day!
@@Edgesofearth awwww ❤️❤️❤️🇰🇭
OMG
khmer ingredients krueng, made with fish trey.
- Ahh. Yeah it really didn't taste good, to me. Unfortunately, I left most of it in the bowl lol.
Lol wedding used to last for 1 weeks they just cut it doww to 2-3 days
- Wowww. Seriously?
Edges Of Earth yes my teacher told me
Aww she's so cute
I’m dying XD
- lol
Also good video
Might be your best work
- Thanks,!
Yeah...my channel is a bit different than other vloggers - I suppose. My goal is never to be beautiful and amazing.
My only goal is to help people feel a bit more of the culture...mainly by spending time with local people.
This one was fun to edit..lots of mini-adventures, which - I think, is more appealing to watch. 😇
Many thanks for stickin' with me, Daniel! 💪🏽
love your vlog
- 😇 Hey thanks!
Hello from Siem Reab :D
- Hello :)
Good opportunity for Pateron, additional footage, pictures, details, and gps of locations...
- patreon has been on the back of my mind for a while. I just hate the thought of asking people for money. It feels weird to me. Currently, I'm spending all of my own personal money to travel the world.
Edges Of Earth - I don’t think it’s considered e-begging, as long as your providing extra content and not phoning it it. Some people just set it up to get paid based on the videos they already produce, that’s where people get angry. But IRL twitch is the hottest thing going right now, check out ‘cjayride’, he’s a lot like you...
- Thought about twitch, also. But it would be a difficult thing to keep 4G constantly and always be live.
With patreon, I am super far behind on videos already. I couldn't imagine making more content. Crazy.
I thought about hosting live videos once or twice a month specifically for the patreon contributors. That would be doable. Or maybe a one on one for the largest contributer. Not sure. Just thoughts at this point lol
Thanks for throwing ideas around :)
Edges Of Earth - Good points, Twitch would get you the most bang for your buck, and not add to your workload too much. There are people out there streaming in Asia, so it’s doable. Awkwards_travel is another twitch channel, they just use a couple of android phones to stream. Best part of streaming, no editing!! ;)
Fast Fact: In the past decades, Cambodian wedding last 15 days up to a month. 2 days is short though 😂
- 😅😅😅
Oh She is my friend
- 😲
It's call a sugar cube plam or usually sugar plam
- it tasted terrible! :-) the two girls loved it, though.
Actually , it tastes so sweet and delicious but sometimes it depends on the people too .
Nice
- 😇
Could you help me with the location or number of that guide.
- Haha, it was a friend of someone I met through couchsurfing. I don't have their contact details. Our meeting was by chance and luck ;)
welcome to Siem Reap ...
- Many thanks 😇
Nice video mr Brokk
- Thanks 😇
@ 16:00 you say “it was a pricier thing.” What was pricier? Boat ride, crocodile meal, something else? The crocodile meal was $5.50, what were the other prices that you paid while there? Were there other tourist there?
- The boat ride. It was about $25. this may not sound like a lot of money, but when you're travelling for years consistently without a job or a break, every little bit matters lol. in addition, this may have been a local price, I am not sure. the woman told me to wait behind on the motor bike so she could get the tickets and then bring them back. she returned to me and told me how much I needed to pay, and then I walked up and paid. she told me that if I walked up to the window with her and asked this price, then I may have had to pay a foreigner price. this was her method to securing a local price. this price was for the cost of the entire boat, and not per person.
Edges Of Earth Gotcha, thanks for the info and quick response. Hoping to go to Cambodia next year. Happy and Safe Travels!
I just got into your videos not too long ago I really love them. I appreciate your honesty and openness. It was crazy how good the sound was when you were riding on the scooter is what microphone are you using on your camera?
- Haha, awesome, thanks for following my crazy adventures! A Rode micro ;)
@@Edgesofearth awesome thanks, ive been looking into getting a new mic and was looking into Rode micro go but wasnt sure of the quality. but all your videos definitely show its good at blocking out most ambient noise. Are you filming on a DSLR? Im going to be getting a new camera before my trip to SE Asia a the end of this year ive been looking into getting a Panasonic Lumix, any thoughts on what you would recommend?
2 days food poisoning ☹️😢
- 😣😣 Yeah..it was bad
"Nom bagn tchok"
There are 2 peoples there one from Americans and other from Philipin
great video! i want to do this too
- Totally. Lots of fun!
Half of the fun was interacting with the locals! Getting a feel for the culture was pretty interesting, to say the least! 💪🏽
Don’t show me that
Dirt, dust, and mud everywhere, huh?
- Constantly! 😳
Be careful with an open air food stand on those rural dirt road,, my friend.
This is rural area.
Palm sap.
- Ahhhh, that's what that stuff was. I didn't like it lol. The locals loved it.
Sugar palm ,it is called brown sugar.
- I tasted it, but, didn't care for it lol
Can i get in touch with you ,sir
- You are in touch with me. We are talking now...lol
You can send me a private YT message or a message on FB or even IG. ;)
did you really get food poisoning from the gator meal
- Yessss 🤮 3 Solid days. So painful. So frustrating.
The pain started about 1 hour after eating it... 🐊
Edges Of Earth the foods in cambodia aren’t carefully inspected in terms of hygiene. Compared to western hygiene, Cambodian hygiene standards are low. Since your immune system isn’t use to the unclean food, it will have problems digesting it. I advise you to be very careful on what you eat especially in Cambodia. Although there are places that are relatively clean.
- Yeah. I'm aware of this. However, this particular place was a restaurant that all of the boaters bring the tourists to. I assumed that since they had a slow, but constant, flow of tourists - the food would be of higher standard and there would be no issues. The presentation, as you can see from the video, was actually quite nice. But it apparently wasn't clean or fully cooked...or something.
I have been living for a year in Vietnam, and I am around the same level of hygiene. Just barbaric at times. I can hardly understand how the people can think certain situations are hygienically, OK. But, they (I'm guessing) just don't understand.
Oh well. Better luck next time, I suppose lol
wow i get sick a lot here in usa because of slack regulations so id fare even worse there. unless i just starve bc i dont wanna die like Elvis
Cаша Mедведь I’m not sure but I’m from Australia.
