The WORST 2-Point Conversions in NFL HISTORY | Giants @ Seahawks (1995)

  • In a 1995 game between the New York Giants and the Seattle Seahawks, Giants head coach Dan Reeves, who was a vocal critic against the 2-point conversion when it was put into place in 1994, decided to go for two on three separate occasions. Not only did the Giants fail all three times, but the Giants lost the game by two points, all but ending their 1995 NFL season. This is the story behind that game.

Nowadays a two point conversion has 3 results. 2 points for the offense, 0, or 2 for the defense.

    • @bobsnow6242
      @bobsnow6242 2 роки тому +3

Technically there's a fourth outcome now - 1 point to the defense. If the team trying to convert somehow gets tackled in its own end zone 98 yards away it's counted as a 1-point safety. The odds of it happening are infinitesimal but it is technically possible and in the rule book.

@@evanschmitt2830 Daniel Jones may have a generic -sounding name, but his game has at least a little sizzle & productivity (seriously, it was a big deal when Dave Brown threw for 200 yards; the 300 stat doesn't surprise me). Dave Brown was one of the most BORING quarterbacks I've ever seen; Danny Kanell offered a spark and excitement that Brown never provided (nice size by Brown, decent arm; maybe he out thought the game, wasn't instinctive enough, played robotically).

Maybe the worst attempt was in 2006, when the Skins played the Cowboys and with Washington leading 5-0 in the first quarter, the Cowboys scored a TD and for some very, very odd reason, Parcells decides to go for two, to make it 8-5. They miss and end up chasing that point the rest of the game, as is usually the case. Also, that failure led to maybe the most bizarre ending of a game in that historical rivalry. Which says a lot, considering how many weird finishes those two teams have had against each other.
That game alone would be worth 2-3 videos here.

Not only did it fail, but Kirby was injured for the season on the play and it left the Dolphins having to go for two again later. They did manage to tie the game at 28 (after trailing 28-0) but they just as easily could've done it by kicking four extra points.

The Giants should have converted 2 of the 3 2-point attempts. The first one, Hampton tripped over his own feet without being touched by a defender. Had he kept his feet when he took the handoff, he likely is able to score. The second one, marshall ran a bad route that was too short but the defender was playing off him so he still could have scored if he caught it and managed to lean back into the end zone anyway. The third one didn't have a chance though.

SI did a cover story wondering why scoring was so low. From '90-92 there were just two teams that scored 400-plus points each season, and only the 49ers could manage it in '93. Even in '94 only the 49ers and Cowboys did it. Then 6 teams did in '95 and last season a whopping 15 teams did. Last season my Dolphins scored more points than they had since '86...and finished 15th.

I mean, Reeves had a point. The 2-point conversion really hasn't improved anything. Scoring would've gone up anyway, and kickers are even more accurate now. All the 2-point conversion's really done is cause coaches to overthink things and give analytics sites yet another reason to act insufferably arrogant and say they know all the answers.

This game is why announcers question 2 point strategy and "chasing points too early". Most don't attempt a 2 pointer prior to at least 20 minutes to go (5:00 in the 3rd) for this reason. Giants almost had to go for 2 the last two times because of the first.
All said, the 2 point conversion made some games at least a bit more exciting in the end. There are way too many ways to get an 8 point game late and two possessions seemed almost impossible.. wishing the NFL would adopt the college/AFL/CFL rule

Super Bowl 37 (XXXVII) ended 48-21, so what I am about to say didn't really matter, but...
The Raiders would go for and fail three two point conversions in a row. They would find themselves down 34-21 instead of 34-24.
There is a HUGE difference between being down 10 there and being down 13. Down 10, you can settle for a FG next time you are out there and cut it to a one score game. You can score and only be down 3 with the ability to tie or take the lead next time you have the ball. However, being down 13 means you are facing desperate 4 down territory needing two TDs or three possessions if forced to settle for a FG with time running out. This desperation COMBINED with the coaching advantage Tampa had over the Raiders is why the game spiralled out of control again for them.
Had the Raiders just kicked the extra points, Tampa Bay would still probably have intercepted Rich Gannon and won 48-24 instead of 48-21. However, only down 10, one has to wonder what kind of approach and play calling and execution we would have seen?
This is why I see these are the true WORST 2 point attempts of all time.

its funny has mad at the 2point play and not his players. his running back fell down before he got to the line but its the play thats at fault. his qb threw a bad pass but its the 2 point play thats the problem and on the third his qb only looked at one spot and threw it there but once again its the fault of the two point play. lol people dont like to take blame and blame something that cant fight back.

I had the strange idea that a team could spend 2 of its timeouts in exchange for an extra two point conversion try . My idea that it could only be done after a field goal or a TD. So a field goal then a two point conversion attempt or a TD, a 2 point conversion attempt and an extra 2 point conversion attempt. So a team could theoretically score 10 points on a possession or 5 after a FG. That’s an exciting idea.

I'm guessing you're not old enough to have watched the NFL during the first few years of the 2 point conversion. It didn't matter at what point the game was at, every team went for 2 as if it were the 4th quarter now. If it was 14-3 in the 1st quarter they went for 2 to try to make it a 3 point game.
