    if you have a 1440p monitor, you can go to 720p as your resolution, becuase it's half of that, it looks great. 1080p scales weird to 1440p, just like 720p does to 1080p

    I've found using desktop mode to just do "normal computer stuff" works very well too, not just for games. Browsing the web, writing documents and general chatting etc. works beautifully.

    currently own a ps5 for games and a macbook for college. always wanted a gaming pc but the cost of entry always kept me away especially over the last few years. and it seems a bit redundant considering what i have. recently was thinking about getting another 3ds or a switch to satisfy my nostalgia induced handheld cravings, but that's when i discovered the steam deck. still haven't pulled the trigger but am definitely thinking it'll be my next big purchase. steam deck seems like the perfect, cheap entry point to pc gaming and the great deals on steam. along with the perfect way to satisfy my desire for a handheld to take me back to my childhood.
    (also i bet with lower settings fps could be a lot better, which would be a trade off id gladly take)

    I'm very impressed. I've always struggled to recommend a PC build to console gamers who are curious about PC gaming, because of the ridiculous cost of entry (GPU prices).
    The Steamdeck's base cost is amazing, for what you get. You can spend under 150 CAD on a fast 1tb nvme upgrade, 30-60 bux on a USB-C hub, and you not only have an amazing handheld, but a pretty capable gaming desktop, as well.

      @@DiThi That's a bummer. Wish there was a setting to allow suspension of desktop apps in gaming mode rather than closing. I can see how they'd want to stop desktop process to dedicate all hardware resources to gaming mode but having a way to disable that if the user wanted would be awesome.

      @@TaylorBrauer There's actually a way, kind of. I can launch plasma desktop as a game, in wayland mode, and then use the pause games plugin in docky to pause the whole desktop... However it's still buggy (mainly with input handling) and I can't set the resolution or use multiple displays, at least not yet. I can only set the resolution of the whole plasma session, and it will be scaled in whatever screen I'm using.

    My “gaming” PC is over 12 years old and couldn’t justify the cost of a complete upgrade. The specs were amazing back when it was put together, 16gb ram, 3.2ghz 4 core i7 and a Nvidia GTA 970, it still plays modern games but maybe not on ultra high settings but does the job.

For around the same price or just a little more, you can get a decent gaming laptop with more storage, higher resolution, and native Windows games (without having to worry about Proton). @@robertcampbellii9787 the deck won’t play games like cod or destiny 2 due to the anti cheat software they use. I’m using it to play story driven games on my back log. Do the graphics look blurry on a 1440p monitor? Will it look better on a 1080p monitor?

    • @TaylorBrauer
      @TaylorBrauer  Рік тому +2

      When in desktop mode you can set the resolution to whatever your monitor supports. You can set the graphics to 1440p on a 1440p but your frames will suffer. Setting it to 1080p on 1440p will cause it to look a little blurry but you'll get better frames. There's also the option of FSR which does some upscaling to prevent blur.

      After experiencing resolution and refresh rate inconsistencies when switching between desktop mode and Steam OS on a 4K display. I decided to purchase a 1080p gaming monitor. I purchased the BenQ EX2710 monitor and I can confirm it works flawlessly between Steam OS and Desktop mode. As stated on your video, when outputting to an external display, Steam games run better in 1080p in Desktop mode. However my emulators run better in Steam OS via EmuDeck. Having a 1080p display offered a flawless experience when switching between the two modes.
