Thanks great video and had a 99 suburban no start when got above 90 degrees of fuse was loose in the fuse box and it turned up the fuse so it would start
Z11, relay/fuse box, has relays for the valvetronic, fuel injection/ignition and DME main relay. I've seen this before. Hit me up next time. I have 15 years of JUST working on BMWs.
JC Superstars Have a 2003 x5 that cranks but won’t start. New Radiator, New thermostat housing, new battery. Still won’t turn over. Fuel pump is fine. Any suggestions?
Hey JC Superstars. I'm having a very similar issue but on a 2012 X5 35d, and I don't think what solved this guy's problem will be the same as mine. Is there a way I can contact you directly and run my situation by you. Happy to pay you for your time.
BMW tech here. Those ISM (integrated supply modules) can throw you for a loop, but generally are the main distribution for voltages in very late E Chassis and are in all F chassis vehicles. Even rodent damage on an oil level sensor harness on an F30 328i can blow an internal fuse in them.
We have had quite a few of those, all engine electrical goes through that ism, inside is a circuit board with ordinary fuses soldered to it,keep the old one,you can open it,convert it to removable fuses and use it as a testbox in the future,if you get a short in engine electrical youll want it for diag.,otherwise youll be blowing through new modules until you find the short
Thanks for the video. Basically who designed this car was really ingenuous.... they put an electronic board inside a gutter. Yes it is a gutter since that compartment where this module is sitting, is designed to flow water coming down from passenger side windshield and then expelling it through a tiny drain at the bottom. The drain is very thin, is about 2 millimeter wide and 3 centimeters long. Leaves and sand will find their way to clog it and water will accumulate, especially after a car wash.... and it will rise to the level where the board is sitting and splash or submerge it. The system is ingenuous, because it will not trigger a failure that will ruin the engine or very expensive parts. For the brand would look very bad when an engine grenade, yet this little bitch module failure will require a lot of trouble shooting and trial and error with parts that will be bought and cannot be returned if no needed and hours that will be billed. If the car ends at a dealer shop, they may fix it in an hour, because they know better, yet they will replace a starter motor even if not needed, after all the car wasn't starting was it? Than charge a 1200$ to the customer just replacing a 140$ part. These little "design flaws" are an ATM for BMW.
Talk about day time training. When I was in flat rate, i had to take losses on cars that had crumbs of info, but in the end it was a learning experience, only the most expensive ones, since it killed my paycheck. Lack of info seems to be what euro service info does best. People don't realize how complex these cars are, and some shop owners as well. They say "it's just a car," I say it's a 20-40 computers on wheels. The car is only what those computers are laid on. Thanks for sharing this one, I'll know what to look for if need be. Btw lack of info sure is better then just plain deceiving info. Jaguar is notorious for sending techs down the wrong road with just plain outright lies in their info. The only thing you can trust is their diagrams. Goods share Mike! On to the next one
I’m dealing with this now on a f15 x5. Main code is same definition as your first code. Ista code is 1f4a10. Opened the ism. All fuses good. Put it back. Still crank No start. Swapped ism from a donor car. Still same. Checked the power distribution box on top of the battery. Also has unserviceable fuses. This is kicking my ass. All modules are communicating. This has turned into a nightmare
i have a 2012 BMW X5 35D that looks like a Integrated Supply Module....where the hell did you i find that part your video just poped up and this vid is 4 yrs old good lord ....just was wounder where its located at ? thanks
My X5 2008 stops starting, it happened unexpectedly. One morning just tried to turn it on and nothing, just cranks but do no starts, I change the fuse box, because I found some rust and green/blue salt over terminal , seem slike some water was leaking for some time, but... the same issue. Just cranks but does not start. The failures I have from the scanner are A03B CAS starter motor terminal 50, 2EFE DME fan activation, 2F44 DME prevent manipulation. Do you have an idea what may causes the failure. I am really angry and desperate. thank you
I know this is an old video so this post is an FYI to anyone working on beamers. I began my education on BMW about 10 years ago. Just recently I had a similar issue on a BMW no crank no start. I have discovered that BMW doesnt always send updates in their paper book wiring diagrams nor online wiring diagrams to the companies they contract for said info. On top of that they wont give complete data on the fuse box descriptions for their fuses; unk if that is on purpose or not. I had to stare for a week at wiring diagrams until I tgought my eyes were gonna fall of my face. Turns out there was a splice connection after the fuse that blew, once it blew it removed power to the EWS transmitter so no key chip data to the EWS module and no ECM authorization to power the starter. Since fuses dont blow without cause I then looked for the location of that splice connection but couldnt find it, it wasnt listed. There was a splice that was a few numbers off, but my splice I was looking for was non existant in that diagram. All I could surmise is BMW had an update but didnt notify the wiring diagram company I was using. I got lucky, replaced the fuse and the car ran fine, without further complications.
So the reason you couldn't find that module is cause it's not a module it's a terminal, terminal 37 to be exact and it has like 6 fuses inside. I'm not trying to be a know all just thought I'd mention why it was hard to find.
Once spent days on a Dodge Caravan for blowing tail lamp fuse. Eventually tracing it to under the dash pad where i found the factory had screwed a bracket on to and through the harness.
@@flatratemaster Ahhhh, it all becomes clear! I spent all day pulling vw mk4 1.8t out, loading it into a privia, and then trying to get it back out again. Started at about 2pm and just finished. Most of this was done solo. Not fun lol btw youve definitely helped alot on this end! Keep em coming :)

anthony aguilar yep not only bmw though, there are many that withhold information. And if I'm brutally honest, at times even the dealer are dished the same dish as us indy guys. So I can't say it would've been necessarily a known issue and fixed quickly. In the end it boils down to the individual tech level. Mike sees all makes and models day in, day out. Dealer techs see one or two models day in day out, so in the end who's ahead of the game? Any way, glad you're reasonable
More like water distribution module lol. I have a gm acadia on hold at work with a cluster screen thats not working. Someone with your experience could probably figure it out fast but for a rookie ass tech like me it's kicking my ass. SI says "oh just connect the GDI and if it's a current code start unplugging module connectors on MOST network and if it turns into a history code then that module is bad." So my dumb ass starts by unplugging the instrument cluster cause its the closest easiest thing to unplug. U code stays current. Then I spend a damn hour removing the damn kick panels and glove box just to get to the human machine interface module that supposedly has a 6 pin connector. SI says its behind the glove box and after I finally get to it there is no 6 pin connector. I unplug a connector that at least has same wire colors and still have a load of current dtcs so next up is the amplifier which I haven't even touched yet. I'm honestly dreading this car because SI is just so shitty sometimes. Of course it's possible I'm just terrible at using GM SI but even the schematic to the cluster has 2 measly wires shown on the diagram when it actually has like 8-9 wires. I'm salary so diag doesn't kill my paycheck so much but then I see the labor ops for these pin point tests paying .3 when it takes a damn .3 just to pull into the bay, plug in the scan tool, and start looking at SI. I really love what I do but a lot of things about this industry are messed up. Anyways mad respect for this diag. Hope to get on your level one day sir.

Good Day @Flat Rate Master I am having similar issue. The X5 E70 35i Cranks but doesn't start. In the Integrated Supply Module(Power Distribution Fuse Box-Z11) the last fuse F03 of 15A keeps on blowing OFF when I connect the battery. Things I have noted 1. When I disconnect the HFM the fuse Doesn't Blow OFF 2. Connect the HFM and disconnect the the connector with 3 pins (X60184) the fuse Doesn't Blow OFF 3. when I Disconnect all the Connectors from DME and when checking for a short circuit I get a small short circuit like behavior from the +ve terminal(which we use to Jump Start the Car) which is in the engine compartment. and when I disconnect the FRM connectors from the Fuse box A4010 the +ve terminal doesn't show the short circuit. Below is the Error codes I am getting when everything is connected and the Z11 F03 Fuse blown state: 332F 2E4B 2D52 2D9C 2C89 300C 300E 277A 3400
Dude, what is the part number and WHERE is this part???? It's great that you spent all theme tracking it down, and doing this video about what the issue and solution was, but without knowing WHERE this part is, and what the PART NUMBER is, it won't help any of us... Please?
Gotta love these Euro cars. Dealing with a 2011 X5 right now. Crank no start. I replaced the IVM and still no start. Same code. Wish I was lucky as you, the battle continues. Staring to thing the DME took a shit since its not grounding pin 4 at the ivm. Even more fun is that you would think if I bypassed it and grounded it myself it would work. Nope. Because Das auto. If I owned my own shop I'd be sending shit like this elsewhere
I would like to get the error code while it was in Cranking n no start condition because my car is in garage in similar condition. They ask me to replace the DME
Hi my 2007 BMW 520d was parked for few weeks every so often I kept starting it but eventually it run out of diesel and battery died so I recharged the battery I put about 20 litre of diesel but the car wouldn't start. Do you have any idea?
Just lime the chevy 2500 we had last week. No turn signals, kept blowing 15amp fuse. No where in schematic is side view mirror listed, but sure enough, we happened along a wire that is part of that circuit. Took care of that wire, problem solved.
"Customer was complaining that they wanted their car back. There it is. Just a reminder of how thankless this line of work is. You are one of the few technicians that can actually include "skilled" in their job title yet the customer would just as well call the swat team on you.
I’ve been there,,NO information and bad wiring diagrams!!! And up at night thing about it over and over and over and losing sleep over it.. Just as you did I stay the course all the way to the fix.. Outstanding job 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻+👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
i understand you got shafted on this one, i know the feeling. like you say you have to get your butt kicked every once and a while but i can't blame you due to lack of service information, reminds me of KIA service information instructions say go here but don't tell you how to go there. The first part of the diagnosis would have took me to the relay as all 3 codes had relay in them regardless of service information. The kicker here is the module you pointed out. i honestly thought you had a programming issue.
Wouldnt it be interesting if the supplier of the wiring diagrams or the manufacturer of the vehicle, could be held liable for published misinformation, poor engineering or negligence for not updating the known incorrect information that's out there. The bottom line is you cared enough and had the detrrmination to see it through to the fix! I commend you. You get a Gold star next to your name for this one.....I have to wonder if the customer has any idea how blessed they are to have found someone like you.
That's one of those things that pisses me off beyond belief with this industry is the lack of information or incorrect information. Its a good thing we just plug a computer in and it tells use whats wrong with that car, right!
You will be a hero next time you get a BMW in with that problem! Make sure the book time is something like 5 hours though so you can recoup some lost wages from the first go-around...
Trouble tree sometimes is just something to hang your self on lol The boys at parts store would of gladly scanned it for you for FREE!!! am glad you are sharing this not just anyone would share Had a new KW something similar days,DAYS of going over the same thing, talk about all emotions going off ,anger, wet eyes, teeth grinding Yup feel your pain
I've had the front power distribution box puzzling me a lot on an X3. I think it was a 2011. It was giving me DSC undervoltage code, and the car would loose power, power steering, all lights in kombi would light up, but of course it was intermitent and never acting up in the shop. I work at a dealership so I was able to have BMW help me on this one. This is the main reason I love these cars. They are not always easy to fix!!!
As a shop owner I've been struggling with whether it's worth it for my techs to spend so much time diagnosing these weird electrical issues or send them to a dealer (who usually just throw darts till they hit something)
All the info on Bmws are mostly in the factory tooling. Sometimes it misses some stuff but its best option if doing alot of bmws. Usually can just look for puddle of water lol. Great job. Were you using a Icom or jbox for Ista?
That’s one of those rare“ keeps you up at night” type of jobs. But in the end determination and perseverance won out. Man it’s a relief when you finally get it fixed though . Awesome job.

Lol
Where is that Module located at
Replaced quite a few of those
Where is the module located
Just did one of them today
Name of the module?
Thanks FRM for sharing!
How did the water get in there? Is it in the front of the engine?
it is under the cabin filter, drain for that well was clogged
Location of that part that fixed it
I forgot to ask ,after this tragedy how many stokies did you smoke ?
Scotch was involved too
Good Day @Flat Rate Master I am having similar issue. The X5 E70 35i Cranks but doesn't start.
In the Integrated Supply Module(Power Distribution Fuse Box-Z11) the last fuse F03 of 15A keeps on blowing OFF when I connect the battery.
Things I have noted
1. When I disconnect the HFM the fuse Doesn't Blow OFF
2. Connect the HFM and disconnect the the connector with 3 pins (X60184) the fuse Doesn't Blow OFF
3. when I Disconnect all the Connectors from DME and when checking for a short circuit I get a small short circuit like behavior from the +ve terminal(which we use to Jump Start the Car) which is in the engine compartment. and when I disconnect the FRM connectors from the Fuse box A4010 the +ve terminal doesn't show the short circuit.
Below is the Error codes I am getting when everything is connected and the Z11 F03 Fuse blown state:
332F
2E4B
2D52
2D9C
2C89
300C
300E
277A
3400
Dude, what is the part number and WHERE is this part???? It's great that you spent all theme tracking it down, and doing this video about what the issue and solution was, but without knowing WHERE this part is, and what the PART NUMBER is, it won't help any of us... Please?
Your best video
Nevertheless, you are the master.
Glad you fix it!
Me too!
I would like to get the error code while it was in Cranking n no start condition because my car is in garage in similar condition. They ask me to replace the DME
Hey I have a 2005 bmw x5 and im having the same problem. So i decided to look for that module and cant find it. Car got no codes. Cranks but no start.
You're a super smart star, from SouthAfrica originally from BUGANDA LAND
Been there done that, sucks ass everytime. Hard to stick with it when you start doubting yourself.
i understand you got shafted on this one, i know the feeling. like you say you have to get your butt kicked every once and a while but i can't blame you due to lack of service information, reminds me of KIA service information instructions say go here but don't tell you how to go there.
You get a Gold star next to your name for this one.....I have to wonder if the customer has any idea how blessed they are to have found someone like you.
that happen to me in the diesel world the power distribution module kick my butt...pretty common water get in the module and goes weird
That's one of those things that pisses me off beyond belief with this industry is the lack of information or incorrect information. Its a good thing we just plug a computer in and it tells use whats wrong with that car, right!
Doesn't get any better until it's fixed....i.e..no dollars until...I'm in a different trade. Enjoy your vids. Nice job.
You will be a hero next time you get a BMW in with that problem! Make sure the book time is something like 5 hours though so you can recoup some lost wages from the first go-around...
Trouble tree sometimes is just something to hang your self on lol
The boys at parts store would of gladly scanned it for you for FREE!!!
am glad you are sharing this not just anyone would share
Had a new KW something similar days,DAYS of going over the same thing, talk about all emotions going off ,anger, wet eyes, teeth grinding
Yup feel your pain
Where is this fuse box located at that you found it wasn't on the diagram
Hang that module on the wall as a reminder, I've always hated working on german cars there overly complicated for me
Great job
Mybe someday another one
will come in and you will
make up for it because
you will know what to do
I've had the front power distribution box puzzling me a lot on an X3.
Yeah does N55 are notorious for that, I’ve had several 535i GT with that issue
Had a very similar issue with an E92 recently where a customer used a karcher to clean the inside of the trunk 😂😂😂 and then denied doing it 🙄😂
keith defazio woulda been wam bam needs this module seen it 20 times. next car....
Bring it to the dealer Bmw keeps info from independent shop bro I learned that the hard way
You think this vid was a little weird?
Well I am in it so yep ;)
Exactly my point. lol
Ozzstar ayy
Where is location of the power distribution module?
As a shop owner I've been struggling with whether it's worth it for my techs to spend so much time diagnosing these weird electrical issues or send them to a dealer (who usually just throw darts till they hit something)
Manufacturing co keep info from independent shops
Nicely done! Hard enough to fix vehicles today with good service info, but without it, it quickly becomes a nightmare.
All the info on Bmws are mostly in the factory tooling. Sometimes it misses some stuff but its best option if doing alot of bmws. Usually can just look for puddle of water lol. Great job. Were you using a Icom or jbox for Ista?
Lol, Jbox, but Icom may be in my future with a the Fcars we see
That’s one of those rare“ keeps you up at night” type of jobs. But in the end determination and perseverance won out. Man it’s a relief when you finally get it fixed though . Awesome job.
What a nightmare. Where was that module located ?
Thank you Mike. I feel for you. Keep Diagnose Dan on speed dial. Have a good week. I appreciate your videos.
Great video and great information on this one Michael! I bet you will see this problem again and who’s going to fix it in 10 min when even the dealer will throw their hands up in the air : you! 👍👍👍
The rubics cube has beaten many and you won.
In fact this video is very educational.
There more to come for us it just the beginning.
Interesting. Is this a normal issue (wiring, no code info) with BMW’s?
Bmw, along with most Euro have all of their service info in their scan tool, so one of the issues in the aftermarket is little info
So why was it full of water?....Former flood car?...The world may never know...lol
Nope drain under the cabin air filter, where that module loves
Nice work stuck in there and got it fixed and great video as always
